Chapter 484: Crying Quietly, Eating Elegantly
A single thought can stretch into an eternity, its path winding towards an unknown destination. Imagine a pure white space, featureless save for a single path forward, flanked by countless doors. As you walk, one door, as if by intuition alone, will compel you to stop.
You push it open, and behind it lies the very thing your heart desires most…
"Shakky," Silvers Rayleigh rumbled, the rich taste of food and wine still lingering on his tongue. "If I hadn't just eaten my fill, I'd find it hard to believe a place like that truly exists."
Shakky lit a cigarette, the tip glowing like a tiny ember in the dim light. She took a long, slow drag and let the smoke curl from her lips. "And you, in your blissful state, seem to have subconsciously ignored these three girls," she noted with a wry smile.
"You're calling them 'girls' too?" Rayleigh chuckled.
Shakky paused, the cigarette held between her fingers. A genuine smile touched her lips. "Shopkeeper Ren has a way with words, doesn't he? It's rather charming. I have a feeling I won't be able to call them anything else from now on."
Rayleigh nodded in agreement. "It seems their fevers have broken. They should be waking up soon. We can figure out our next move then. The first priority is letting them recover from their injuries."
"We'll see," Shakky said, her gaze softening. "For now, all they need is rest."
These were the first words Boa Hancock heard as she drifted up from the depths of a hazy, dreamless sleep. Her eyes fluttered open, and for a moment, she was paralyzed by the sheer unfamiliarity of her surroundings. A clean ceiling, soft sheets, the faint scent of antiseptic. She looked down, seeing the white bandages wrapped snugly around her arms and torso, and the memories of what happened before came rushing back in a torrent of pain and fear.
"You are…"
Hancock slowly pushed herself up and walked out of the room, her movements stiff and uncertain. She saw Rayleigh and Shakky chatting quietly and asked, her voice a weak, raspy whisper, "Where… where is this place?"
"Where?" Shakky turned, her expression gentle. "Let's just say it's nowhere near the Red Line. You three… you're free now."
Hearing those words, Hancock froze. Her entire body went rigid. Then, her shoulders began to tremble, and a choked sob escaped her lips. The sound was raw, torn from a place of deep, old suffering. She crumpled to the floor, and the sobs turned into unrestrained weeping, the tears of a child who had forgotten how to cry. Rayleigh and Shakky, two individuals whose combined age was well over a century, simply stood and watched. At this moment, words of comfort were useless. The only thing to do was let her cry it all out.
It was a proof of the abnormal resilience of their bodies, likely enhanced by the Devil Fruits they had consumed, that Hancock's two younger sisters, Boa Sandersonia and Boa Marigold, also awoke soon after.
Seeing their older sister weeping on the floor, they immediately feared the worst. They scrambled to her side, their own faces pale with alarm. "Sister, what's wrong?!" Sandersonia cried out, her voice frantic.
After the situation was explained, a wave of stunned silence fell over them. Then, two more sets of sobs joined the first, and the three sisters clung to each other, their collective grief and relief pouring out in a flood of tears.
Rayleigh let out a long sigh. "This is why I sometimes think young girls are better. They don't try to control their emotions. They're more genuine."
Shakky exhaled a perfect ring of smoke, her eyes glinting with amusement. "Are you sure it's not because young, pretty girls are easier to fool?" she retorted dryly.
A muscle in Rayleigh's jaw twitched. Good heavens, she saw right through him. He wisely chose not to argue the point. When they had received the news, they had found the three girls wandering the streets, gaunt and terrified. He could only imagine how long they had gone without a proper meal.
As if on cue, a series of loud, rumbling growls echoed through the room. The three sisters' stomachs, in perfect, mortified unison, announced their desperate hunger.
Shakky's smile returned. "See? This is why I said Shopkeeper Ren must understand women very well. At least, far better than you do."
"Hey, Shakky, say what you will, but don't make unfair comparisons," Rayleigh grumbled, though without any real heat. "But you're right. Your dishes should be ready."
"You don't need to tell me," she said, her tone business-like but warm. "I'm far more reliable than you in that regard."
Shakky turned her attention to the three girls, who had fallen silent, their tear-streaked faces filled with a shy, reserved apprehension as they stared at the two adults. "Come on, time to eat," she said gently. "But first, let's see if this needs reheating… Eh?! It's still piping hot?"
She retrieved a small, dark clay pot from the side table. At first, Hancock and her sisters eyed it with suspicion, but then Shakky lifted the lid. A plume of fragrant steam billowed out, carrying with it an aroma so rich and comforting that all three girls' eyes widened in unison.
After ladling the contents into three bowls, Shakky shook her head in mild disbelief. "Honestly, I'm truly impressed by that man. How can a simple soup be made to smell so divine? What are you waiting for? Come and eat."
Hancock, Sandersonia, and Marigold exchanged hesitant glances before slowly making their way to the table. They were so hungry it was a physical ache. Their eyes were glued to the bowls of steaming soup and the spread of other simple dishes laid out before them.
Shakky smiled. "It's all for you. No one is going to take it away. Eat up."
That was all the permission they needed. In an instant, all thoughts of manners and elegance were forgotten. There was only the clinking of spoons against porcelain and the desperate, single-minded focus of eating.
"Sonia! Marie! This soup is so delicious!" Hancock exclaimed between mouthfuls, her voice thick with emotion.
"Yes, Big Sister!"
"Mmm! This meat is delicious too! It's so fragrant!"
Watching the three of them eat with such unadulterated relish, even Rayleigh found his own appetite stirring. There was something infectious about seeing someone enjoy their food so thoroughly.
Shakky shot him a sharp look. "You're not thinking of snatching their food, are you, Rayleigh?"
He gave an embarrassed laugh, caught red-handed. He had, in fact, been tempted to ask for a taste. Seeing the undisguised mockery in Shakky's eyes, Rayleigh could only lower his head in silent surrender. For the first time in what felt like a lifetime, the three sisters smiled, a genuine, happy smile that reached their eyes.
They knew, from the moment they woke up in this safe, warm room, from the very first bite of this incredible food, that they were truly, finally free. Liberated. So they smiled, and they cried, and they ate.
Only after they had eaten their fill, the comforting weight of the food settling in their stomachs, did the tension finally leave their bodies. To be full was to feel safe.
Hancock looked up, her expression nervous. "Thank you…" she whispered.
Shakky's smile was kind. "Shopkeeper Ren knew you'd say that. He asked me to tell you this was part of his own breakfast, so consider it an employee meal. No charge. He also said not to lie down right after eating your fill, because it's bad for your health… Honestly," she mused, "I've never met such a thoughtful man."
Hancock's curiosity was piqued. "Ren… Shopkeeper Ren?"
"That's right. He's the one who treated your injuries, found the medicine for your fevers, and made this soup for you."
Sandersonia spoke up quickly. "Then… where is Shopkeeper Ren?"
"He's not in this world."
The atmosphere instantly chilled. Hancock's hand clenched into a fist at her side, her eyes turning red again. "How could that be…" she choked out, the thought of their mysterious savior being gone filling her with a fresh wave of despair.
Rayleigh sighed heavily. "Shakky, must you phrase things so dramatically? Shopkeeper Ren's restaurant is in another world. We just happened to stumble upon his shop while we were bringing you back."
Hearing this, the three sisters let out a collective sigh of relief. For a terrifying moment, they had thought their benefactor was dead, which would have only confirmed their feeling of being bad omens.
"Another world?!" Hancock asked, her eyes wide with disbelief. "What is another world?!"
"Another world is… well, another world," Rayleigh said with a shrug. "The point is, he's not dead. You three just need to remember that name."
"Mhm!" the three of them nodded in unison.
Hancock held her spoon, staring blankly into the last dregs of winter melon soup in her bowl. After a long moment, she lowered her head and resumed eating, her movements slow and deliberate, a stark contrast to her earlier frenzy.
In that very same instant, in a different place entirely, Yakumo Yukari and the others sensed a subtle shift in the atmosphere. They turned their heads to look, and their eyes widened in surprise.
Even Lucifer and Pandora were stunned into silence.
There sat Boa Hancock, a woman they knew from a decade in the future. One hand was clenched into a tight fist in her lap. The other held a spoon with unshakable grace, bringing the soup to her lips. But she was crying. Silent, uncontrollable tears streamed down her cheeks, tracing paths over her flawless skin before dripping from her chin.
Ten years later, Hancock was tasting this dish once again. It was still just as delicious, still just as warm, still the most wonderful flavor she had ever known. She was still crying, just as ungracefully as she had as a child.
But this time, she cried quietly. And she ate elegantly.
"It's still," she whispered to the empty air, her voice trembling, "just as delicious…"
