Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Preparing for the Inevitable

Chapter 21: Preparing for the Inevitable

POV: Nova Asahi

Ten days before the scheduled USJ field trip, Nova's Danger Sense began activating like a faulty smoke detector—random spikes of warning that made him flinch during lectures, spin around in empty hallways, and scan rooftops for threats that existed only in futures he couldn't explain.

His classmates noticed.

"Dude, you're jumpier than Kaminari after he short-circuits," Kirishima observed during lunch, watching Nova's head snap toward a window where nothing but afternoon sunlight waited. "Everything okay?"

"No, everything is very much not okay. In ten days, the League of Villains is going to attack our field trip with enough firepower to level city blocks, and I can't warn anyone without sounding completely insane."

"Just feeling restless," Nova lied, forcing his shoulders to relax despite every instinct screaming that danger lurked around corners he couldn't see. "Too much sitting in classrooms when I want to be training."

But the Enhanced Danger Sense painted his world in layers of unease that grew stronger each day. Hostile intent gathering somewhere beyond his detection range, malicious plans forming in minds that viewed his classmates as obstacles or prizes. The sensation felt like standing in a thunderstorm's path while everyone else enjoyed the sunshine.

"I need to do something. Can't prevent the attack without revealing impossible foreknowledge, but I can make sure everyone's as prepared as possible when it happens."

Nova began dropping careful warnings like breadcrumbs, hoping authority figures would follow the trail toward better security without questioning his motives too deeply.

"All Might," Nova said after Basic Hero Training, catching the Symbol of Peace as other students filtered toward the locker rooms. "I've been having bad feelings about upcoming field trips. My danger sense has been... active lately."

All Might's expression shifted from jovial teacher to veteran hero processing threat assessment. His skeletal form in the empty gymnasium somehow carried more authority than his muscular appearance during classes.

"Specific threats, Young Nova? Or general unease?"

"General, but persistent," Nova replied, choosing his words like a bomb disposal expert selecting which wire to cut. "Something feels wrong about leaving campus for training exercises. Like someone's watching, waiting for opportunities."

"Please take this seriously. Please increase security. Please don't ask me to explain how I know that villains are planning to infiltrate the most secure training facility in Japan."

All Might nodded with gravity that made Nova's chest tight with relief. "Your instincts have proven reliable during previous incidents. I'll discuss additional security measures with Principal Nezu and ensure my personal attendance at all off-campus training."

Similar conversations with Aizawa yielded equally promising results. Nova's homeroom teacher listened to concerns about "security seeming lighter than expected for a school with such valuable students" with the analytical attention of someone whose paranoia had kept him alive through years of underground hero work.

"Noted," Aizawa said, making actual notes in a book that probably contained enough classified information to topple governments. "I'll coordinate with security to increase patrol frequency and surveillance coverage."

"Good. More eyes watching, more heroes ready to respond when things go sideways. It won't prevent the attack, but it might minimize casualties."

But it was Momo who posed the most dangerous questions, her analytical mind processing Nova's behavior with uncomfortable precision.

"You're preparing for something specific," she said during their partnered combat practice, watching him test equipment combinations with obsessive thoroughness. "This isn't general readiness—you're optimizing for particular scenarios."

Nova activated his Crisis loadout for what felt like the hundredth time that week: Danger Sense for threat detection, Combat Precognition for tactical awareness, Lightning Touch for offensive capability, Steel Skin for defense, Minor Regeneration for sustainability. The combination felt like wearing armor made of borrowed lightning.

"Crisis Response configuration. Everything I need to protect people when the world decides to end on a Tuesday afternoon."

"Heroes should always prepare for worst-case scenarios," Nova replied, not quite meeting her intelligent gaze. "The more prepared we are, the better we can protect people when things go wrong."

"And you believe things will go wrong?"

"I know they will. I've seen exactly how wrong they can go, and I'm terrified that my preparations won't be enough to save everyone."

"I believe," Nova said carefully, "in being ready for anything."

Momo studied his face with the intensity of someone solving complex equations, but whatever conclusion she reached seemed to satisfy her curiosity. For now.

The hidden expenses were adding up like compound interest on Nova's Hero Point balance. Three thousand points vanished into consumables that Mei Hatsume's support gear could conceal within his costume's hidden compartments:

[HP Potion (Small) x10 - 500 Hero Points] [MP Potion (Medium) x5 - 1,000 Hero Points]

[Stamina Booster x8 - 800 Hero Points] [Emergency Ration Pills x15 - 300 Hero Points] [Smoke Pellets x12 - 400 Hero Points]

[Total Spent: 3,000 Hero Points] [Remaining Balance: 15,000 Hero Points]

The support gear felt like insurance policies against disasters he couldn't prevent. If—when—the USJ attack happened, Nova would have pharmaceutical backup for whatever the League threw at them. Healing for injured classmates, energy restoration for exhausted heroes, tactical advantages for impossible situations.

"Fifteen thousand points left. Enough for seven more Premium Rolls if I survive whatever's coming. But first, I need to make sure everyone else survives too."

The math felt reasonable until Nova considered the human cost of his preparations. Each potion represented classmates who might need emergency medical intervention. Each stamina booster suggested fights that would push teenagers beyond their limits. Each smoke pellet implied situations where visibility would be weaponized against them.

"I'm buying battlefield supplies for a war that hasn't started yet. What does that make me? Prepared or complicit?"

The confrontation came during their regular training session at Dagobah Beach, where clean sand and ocean breeze created an illusion of peace that made Nova's constant vigilance feel paranoid and exhausting. Izuku noticed immediately.

"You've been different lately," his green-haired friend said without preamble, setting down the weight he'd been lifting to focus entirely on Nova's obvious discomfort. "Scared but trying to hide it. Jumping at shadows, checking exits, looking like you expect attacks from empty air."

"Because I do expect attacks. Because I know they're coming and I can't explain how without revealing the impossible truth of my existence."

Nova felt his carefully maintained composure cracking like glass under pressure. The weight of secrets and approaching disaster pressed against his chest like a physical force, making each breath an effort of will.

"Is something wrong?" Izuku continued, stepping closer with the gentle persistence that had made him legendary for saving people who didn't want to be saved. "Are you in some kind of trouble? Because whatever it is, we can figure it out together."

"Together. If only it were that simple. If only I could tell him that villains are planning to attack our field trip with enough force to kill professional heroes, and the only reason I know is because I'm not supposed to exist in this world at all."

Nova gripped Izuku's shoulder with enough force to make his friend wince, channeling every ounce of conviction he possessed into words that had to carry the weight of warnings he couldn't give directly.

"Promise me something," Nova said, his voice carrying intensity that made Izuku's analytical mind sharpen with attention. "During the USJ trip, stay alert. Protect our classmates no matter what happens. Your heroic instincts might save lives—trust them completely, even if the situation seems impossible."

Izuku's eyes widened with the recognition of someone receiving prophecy disguised as advice. "Nova, what aren't you telling me? If there's a specific threat—"

"Promise me," Nova interrupted, desperation bleeding through his controlled facade. "Promise you'll be ready for anything, and that you'll keep everyone safe."

"I promise," Izuku said immediately, though confusion and concern warred in his expression. "But when this is over, whatever it is, you're going to explain what's really going on."

"If we survive what's coming, I'll tell you everything. The truth about where I came from, what I really am, and how I know the things I shouldn't know. But first, we need to survive."

Nova nodded and released Izuku's shoulder, feeling like he'd just passed a sacred trust to someone whose heroic nature would never let him break a promise to protect people.

"Seven days until USJ. Seven days to finalize preparations and pray that subtle warnings will be enough to change fate without shattering the timeline entirely."

The text message arrived at 11:47 PM like digital poison injected directly into Nova's bloodstream:

"The game has multiple players, and some play for the other side. - A.F.O."

Nova stared at his phone's screen until the words burned into his retinas, each character carrying implications that made his Enhanced Danger Sense scream warnings about threats that transcended physical violence.

"All For One. The final boss knows I exist. Not just suspects—knows. And he's telling me that he's aware of what I am, what I'm doing, and that he considers me an active player in whatever game he's orchestrating."

The message confirmed Nova's worst fears about timeline alteration. His presence hadn't just created butterfly effects—it had drawn the attention of Japan's most dangerous villain, someone whose intelligence and power made him capable of adapting to unexpected variables.

"How much does he know? Does he understand that I have meta-knowledge of his plans? Has he figured out that I'm not from this world originally? Or does he just know that someone with impossible abilities is interfering with his carefully laid schemes?"

Nova deleted the message and turned off his phone, but the damage was done. All For One had reached across the digital divide to let him know that his actions were being observed, analyzed, and potentially countered by someone whose strategic thinking operated on levels that made chess look like tic-tac-toe.

"Six days until USJ. Six days until I find out whether my preparations are enough to protect everyone from a villain who now knows I'm coming."

Sleep came eventually, filled with dreams of smoke and shadows where faceless enemies moved with surgical precision toward objectives Nova couldn't reach in time to prevent.

[SYSTEM ALERT: ADVANCED THREAT DETECTED]

[ALL FOR ONE HAS ACKNOWLEDGED USER'S EXISTENCE]

[WARNING: TIMELINE ALTERATIONS MAY HAVE UNPRECEDENTED CONSEQUENCES]

[RECOMMENDATION: PREPARE FOR ACCELERATED CONFLICT ESCALATION]

[QUEST UPDATE: "SHADOWS GATHERING" - FINAL PHASE INITIATED]

[TIME TO USJ INCIDENT: 6 DAYS, 14 HOURS, 23 MINUTES]

The countdown felt like watching a bomb's timer tick toward detonation, and Nova could only hope that when the explosion came, his friends would be strong enough to survive the blast.
