Chapter 168 - . Shadows in the Gloom

168 — Shadows in the Gloom

After dealing with the entity, Marcelline's lips curved into a slow, mischievous smirk. A little devilish curiosity nudged her—what was Maximilian doing now? The thought of seeing him, stressed and brooding, tugged at her darkly playful side.

With a flick of her fingers and a whisper, she slipped into Maximilian's world, her presence cloaked, invisible, untouchable. Her golden-amber devil aura glowed faintly around her, a soft, dangerous pulse that made the shadows of the mansion bend subtly toward her.

The mansion itself seemed to mourn. The grand halls, normally alive with light and luxury, now dimmed into cold darkness. Even the chandeliers held back their glow, as if respecting the heavy air that lingered inside. It smelled faintly of polished wood, old books, and… alcohol.

She floated silently through the corridors, her heels not making a sound. When she entered Maximilian's chamber, her eyes sparkled with amusement—and a pinch of concern.

There he was. Reclined slightly on the couch, his suit perfectly tailored but wrinkled at the sleeves, hair falling loosely over his forehead. A glass of amber liquid rested in his hand, tipped to his lips, but mostly forgotten. The glow in his eyes—once sharp, commanding, almost feral—was now dulled, tired, heavy. The air around him hummed with frustration, exhaustion, and an invisible weight that not even his title could carry away.

Marcelline's devilish grin widened. My, my, my… what an unexpectedly sad little CEO we have here. Her voice purred in the shadows, though Maximilian couldn't hear her, her aura brushing against his senses anyway. I don't like when my entertainment loses all entertainment. Someone's far too serious… time to recharge, baby Ness.

She leaned against the wall, unseen, watching him. His hand rubbed his temple, a faint groan escaping him as he scrolled through endless documents on the laptop. The sharp lines of his jaw were tense, his broad shoulders stiff, every inch of him radiating the weight of leadership—of battles he couldn't show to anyone.

The smell of alcohol mingled with the faint remnants of smoke from a candle he'd left burning. Even the air seemed dense, heavy with the scent of a man who had been holding too much inside. Marcelline tilted her head, amused. And here I thought demons were bad at letting others carry their burdens. Silly me. Humans do it too, but they do it so… tragically.

She floated closer, just a whisper's distance, letting her aura brush subtly over him. The faint glow of her amber eyes was invisible to him—but his instincts shifted. A chill tickled the base of his spine, a flicker of awareness that someone—or something—was near.

Maximilian's hand froze mid-scroll. His eyes darted briefly around the dim room, scanning shadows, though he saw nothing. The feeling was… different this time. Not just the usual sense of being watched during these recent days of chaos—it was playful, teasing, dangerous, intimate.

Marcelline's smirk deepened. Yes, that's right… feel me without seeing me. That's the fun part.

She let her devilish aura pulse gently, teasing the edges of his senses. A subtle warmth, just enough to make his pulse hitch, just enough to make the tight line of his jaw relax minutely, just enough to make the tension in his shoulders twitch.

"Pathetic little mortal…" she whispered under her breath, barely audible even to herself. "So strong… so serious… and yet, look at you. Needing a little… recharge. And I am just the right kind of mischief for that."

She circled slowly, like a predator savoring every detail. The way his hand gripped the laptop, the faint tremor in his wrist, the way his lips pressed together when he swallowed back a groan, the dark smudge under his eyes from days without proper rest.

Oh, baby Ness… you think you're carrying the world. How cute. How very, very adorable. And I am going to remind you exactly how to breathe again.

Her golden-amber iris glowed brighter, pulsing softly in the shadows of the dimly lit chamber. Every flicker of light that touched her aura bent toward her, as if the mansion itself recognized the danger—and delight—she brought.

Maximilian shifted slightly, almost imperceptibly, his instincts flaring in silent recognition. Not fear… curiosity. That deep, unrelenting, uneasy curiosity.

Marcelline's smirk grew, sharp and slow. "Time to wake up, baby Ness," she whispered, voice dripping with mischief. "The night is mine… and so are you—unseen, untouchable, untamed."

The air hummed with tension. Shadows stretched unnaturally. Her aura, subtle yet undeniable, wrapped around the room like a velvet warning.

Marcelline sank gracefully onto the edge of his desk, her eyes glowing brighter, playful yet dangerous. This is my stage now… and you… you're my willing audience.

The CEO shivered slightly, still unaware of her presence… still drawn into the pull of something he couldn't name, couldn't fight, couldn't resist.

And Marcelline? She leaned back, crossed one leg over the other, devilish smirk fully in place, and whispered softly: Let's see how grumpy you look after a little… intervention.
