Chapter 67: Klaus Awakens - Part 1

POV: Sam Barton

The dagger falls from Klaus's chest with a metallic clang that echoes through the Salvatore basement like a gunshot, and I know with absolute certainty that we're about to face something my preparations might not survive.

Klaus's eyes snap open—gold and burning with fury that could immolate cities.

He sits up with fluid grace, his hybrid power radiating visibly as waves of supernatural energy that make the air itself feel heavy. Desiccated flesh fills out to perfect health in seconds. His presence transforms the basement from stone room to throne room through sheer force of personality.

"I've been daggered for months," Klaus says, his accent carrying old-world menace. "Someone will die for this."

"Welcome back, sunshine," Damon quips from his position near the stairs, because apparently surviving this long hasn't taught him when to shut up. "We've redecorated. You like the new vervain storage?"

Klaus blurs.

One second he's in the coffin. The next, he has Damon against the wall with his hand crushing the vampire's throat.

"Still making jokes, Damon Salvatore?" Klaus asks pleasantly. "Let's see how funny you are without your head."

"Brother, wait," Elijah intervenes, moving with the diplomatic calm he's perfected over a millennium. "Things have changed."

"Changed how?" Klaus demands, but he releases Damon—who collapses gasping unnecessarily since vampires don't need air but the psychological reflex remains.

I step forward, and all five of my clones manifest simultaneously around the basement—a deliberate show of force and capability designed to establish that I'm threat worth listening to instead of just killing immediately.

"Niklaus Mikaelson," I say with more confidence than I feel. "I'm Sam Barton. I led the ritual that freed your hybrid nature, daggered you to prevent immediate genocide, and spent these months building an alliance to give you what you actually want—freedom, family, and power. Peacefully."

Klaus releases Damon completely, turning his full attention to me.

It's like being studied by apex predator deciding whether you're prey or competition.

"You're the human I've heard whispers about," Klaus says slowly. "The Clone Sovereign. The tactician who coordinates supernaturals like pawns on a chessboard."

"I coordinate allies," I correct. "People choose to work with me because it serves their interests."

"And what interests would those be?" Klaus asks, circling me slowly.

My clones shift to maintain defensive formation without being overtly threatening—Mind Shield positioned to block compulsion, Defensive Shield ready to project barriers, Magic Absorption prepared to drain hostile magic, Sensory tracking Klaus's movements, Strength providing physical backup if negotiation fails.

"Survival," I reply honestly. "Protection from greater threats. The freedom to exist without constant warfare. Standard motivations."

"Survival," Klaus repeats mockingly. "You daggered me for months and expect me to believe you want survival?"

"I daggered you because you were about to slaughter everyone to create your hybrid army," I counter. "Now you're free to be hybrid without genocide. That seems like upgrade."

Klaus's expression flickers—surprise that I'm not cowering combined with calculation about my worth alive versus dead.

Then Rebekah steps forward.

"Nik," she says, and her voice carries centuries of sisterly affection mixed with exasperation. "Listen to him. He woke me first, treated me with respect, showed me you succeeded in breaking mother's curse. He's not your enemy."

Klaus freezes completely, turning to fully face his sister like he's seeing ghost.

"Rebekah?" His voice cracks slightly—the first genuine emotion I've heard from him. "Sister."

They embrace with ferocity that speaks to a thousand years of complicated family bonds—love and betrayal and desperate need for connection all wrapped together.

"You daggered me in New York," Rebekah says against his shoulder. "For loving someone you deemed unworthy. Ninety years, Nik. Ninety years unconscious while the world changed."

"I'm sorry," Klaus whispers, and the apology sounds like it's being dragged from somewhere deep and painful. "I was trying to protect you. They always leave us. Everyone always—"

"Not everyone," Rebekah interrupts, pulling back to look at him directly. "Sam's alliance has proven reliable for months. Elijah trusts him. I'm choosing to trust him. Maybe you should too."

Klaus's humanity vanishes as quickly as it appeared, defensive walls slamming back into place.

"Trust," he scoffs. "A luxury I can't afford." He turns back to me, predatory calculation returning. "Partnership with a human? Why should I trust any of you? What's preventing me from killing everyone in this room and taking what I want by force?"

"Strategy," I reply. "You could kill us. You'd probably succeed despite our preparations. But then what? You're free hybrid with no allies, no intelligence network, no protection against threats you haven't identified yet. And trust me—there are threats coming that even you can't handle alone."

"Like what?" Klaus challenges.

"Your father," I reply, and Klaus goes absolutely still. "Mikael hunts you. We know where he's sealed, and we're maintaining those seals. Kill us, and that knowledge dies too. Plus you'd face whatever comes next—witches, werewolves, vampires who see you as threat—without the coalition that's been managing supernatural politics in your absence."

It's calculated risk revealing Mikael information, but Klaus needs to understand cooperation provides value he can't achieve through violence.

"Mikael," Klaus breathes, and for the first time I see genuine fear flash across his expression. "You're containing my father?"

"We're maintaining the seals other witches established," I clarify. "Same way we've been preventing your siblings from being accidentally awakened or stolen. We've protected your family while you were daggered, Klaus. That's worth something."

Klaus circles me again, but this time his assessment seems less "prey" and more "interesting specimen."

"Show me what you can do, Sam Barton," Klaus commands. "Convince me you're worth keeping alive."

My clones move in perfect synchronization—Mind Shield blocking Klaus's attempted compulsion before it forms, Defensive Shield creating barriers that cage the space without trapping Klaus directly, Magic Absorption draining ambient supernatural energy, Sensory tracking everyone's positions simultaneously, Strength demonstrating physical capability that shouldn't exist in human form.

Klaus watches with fascination that gradually transforms into predatory approval.

"Interesting," he says, his smile sharp enough to cut. "Very interesting. Let's discuss terms."

Klaus gestures toward the basement stairs. "Come. Let's negotiate somewhere more comfortable. And Sam Barton? Try not to bore me. I haven't been entertained in months."

As we ascend toward what might be productive negotiation or elaborate execution, Caroline squeezes my hand briefly.

"You've got this," her expression says without words.

I squeeze back, hoping she's right.

Because Klaus Mikaelson is finally awake, and everything we've built balances on whatever happens next.
