Chapter 51: The Rose and Trevor Survival
POV: Sam Barton
Two days after returning from Chicago, Alaric forwards me a message from an unexpected source: Rose, the vampire I saved from Elijah's execution months ago when she and Trevor brought Elena to Klaus's attention.
"Need to speak with Sam Barton urgently. Will meet at location of his choosing. Trevor and I require asylum. - Rose"
I'm in the boarding house library reviewing intelligence reports when the message arrives, Caroline organizing our coalition documentation into binders that look like they belong in corporate office rather than supernatural war room.
"Rose and Trevor," I explain, showing Caroline the message. "Vampires who kidnapped Elena to trade to Klaus back when we first learned about the sacrifice ritual. I convinced Elijah to spare them instead of executing them for betraying the Mikaelson family."
"And now they're asking for asylum," Caroline concludes, already opening new spreadsheet section titled "Vampire Refugee Management." "They know Klaus will wake eventually and want protection."
"Or they have information valuable enough to trade for sanctuary," I counter. "Rose ran from Klaus for five hundred years—she knows his network, his tactics, possibly his siblings' locations."
"So you're meeting them," Caroline states, not asking.
"With proper precautions," I confirm, manifesting my Defensive Shield and Sensory clones. "Neutral location, coalition backup on standby, escape routes planned."
We arrange the meeting for an abandoned house on Mystic Falls' outskirts—property that technically belongs to the Barton family trust but hasn't been occupied in years. My parents owned multiple properties as safe houses and research locations, leaving me with real estate portfolio that's proving surprisingly useful for supernatural asylum arrangements.
Rose and Trevor arrive exactly on time, both carrying the careful wariness of vampires who've survived centuries through paranoia and quick thinking. Rose looks the same as I remember—dark hair, sharp eyes, controlled vampire presence that speaks to genuine skill rather than just age. Trevor's more nervous, his loyalty to Rose evident in how he positions himself protectively despite knowing she's stronger.
"Sam Barton," Rose greets, relief visible despite her attempt at professional neutrality. "Thank you for meeting us. After Chicago—after what happened with Katherine—we weren't sure you'd trust any vampire requesting sanctuary."
"Katherine's betrayal doesn't define all vampire alliances," I reply, my Defensive Shield clone positioned between them and me while Sensory scans for additional threats. "But I need to understand what you're asking for before committing coalition resources."
Trevor speaks up, his voice carrying desperation that's painful to witness. "Klaus will wake. Maybe months, maybe a year, but Original vampires heal even around daggers given sufficient time. When he rises, he'll remember everyone who opposed him, everyone who ran from him. Rose and I—we're dead the moment he's free."
"Unless you have protection he can't easily override," I finish. "What are you offering in exchange?"
Rose pulls out leather-bound journal that looks centuries old. "Klaus's network. Every vampire loyal to him across North America, their locations, their capabilities, their roles in his organization. Trevor and I spent five hundred years hiding from this network—we know it better than Klaus himself at this point."
My Sensory clone confirms the journal's genuine age and Rose's sincerity. This isn't a trap—this is desperate survival trade from vampires who've run out of places to hide.
"And?" I press, because there's always more with five-hundred-year-old vampires.
"Information about his siblings," Rose adds. "Not locations—Katherine probably already told you those. But personalities, political leanings, who Klaus trusts versus fears. Rebekah's blindly loyal but emotionally volatile. Kol's chaotic and enjoys violence for entertainment. Finn despises vampirism and might actually help destroy Klaus if properly motivated."
This matches my meta-knowledge from canon, but having confirmation from vampire who's interacted with the Original family directly adds credibility and detail.
Before I can respond, Elijah materializes from the shadows with supernatural grace that makes Trevor flinch and Rose tense into combat stance.
"Rose. Trevor," Elijah greets with diplomatic formality that carries undertones of ancient threat. "You return to Mystic Falls after fleeing with Elena. Why should I allow you to live, let alone provide asylum?"
I step between them and Rose, my Defensive Shield clone projecting subtle golden barrier. "Because they're useful alive. Rose knows Klaus's network better than anyone, Trevor understands his psychological patterns. Plus, they made a mistake out of fear, not malice. Elijah, you're noble—mercy is supposed to be part of that nobility."
Elijah's expression doesn't change, but something shifts in his posture. "Your word is becoming currency, Sam Barton. Very well. Rose and Trevor may remain under your protection. But should they betray this coalition or endanger Elena again, I will execute them personally regardless of your objections."
"Fair terms," I agree before Rose can protest.
Elijah vanishes as suddenly as he appeared, leaving us with asylum arrangement that's both protection and leash.
"Thank you," Rose breathes. "Sam, you have no idea what you just did. Elijah could have killed us instantly—his word to Klaus would have justified it. But you negotiated mercy."
"I negotiated mutual benefit," I correct. "You provide intelligence, I provide protection. Don't make me regret this arrangement."
Trevor's examining the abandoned house with professional assessment. "This is your safe house?"
"One of several my parents' trust owns," I confirm. "It's secure, warded against magical detection thanks to Bonnie's work, and isolated enough that vampire presence won't attract attention. You stay here, provide intelligence as requested, and avoid drawing Klaus's network to Mystic Falls."
"And when Klaus wakes?" Rose asks quietly.
"We deal with him as coalition," I reply. "Rose, you've run for five hundred years. Maybe it's time to stop running and start fighting from position of strength instead of fear."
The suggestion clearly catches her off-guard. "You want us to fight Klaus? An Original vampire?"
"I want you to help prevent him from creating hybrid army that destabilizes entire supernatural world," I clarify. "Rose, Trevor—you know his network, his tactics, his vulnerabilities. That knowledge is weapon if properly applied."
Over the next two hours, Rose and Trevor provide intelligence briefing that adds crucial detail to my tactical understanding of Klaus's organization. Vampire cells across major cities, each loyal to Klaus through combination of fear, respect, and supernatural compulsion. Hybrid creation requirements that go beyond just doppelgänger blood—specific ritual timing, lunar alignments, werewolf pack cooperation or coercion.
"Klaus's siblings are wild cards," Rose explains, flipping through the ancient journal. "If they all wake simultaneously, they could kill him or support him depending on their mood and who speaks first. Rebekah will side with Klaus out of love. Kol will support whoever promises most chaos. Finn might oppose vampirism itself if convinced it's the right choice."
"So controlling the order of awakening is critical," I conclude, filing this away for future strategic planning.
[NEW ALLIES: ROSE AND TREVOR]
[RELATIONSHIP STATUS: ALLIED INFORMANTS]
[BONUS: +10% INTELLIGENCE ACCURACY]
[EXPERIENCE GAINED: +600]
[LEVEL 24: 600/2,600 TO LEVEL 25]
[ELIJAH'S TACIT APPROVAL SECURED]
The experience gain settles into my system, and I'm reviewing the freed saved affinity slot when tactical opportunity presents itself. My Mind Shield mastery has reached 31%—stable enough to save without risk of degradation.
[SAVE AFFINITY: MIND SHIELD?]
[CURRENT MASTERY: 31%]
[WARNING: SAVING PREVENTS FURTHER MASTERY GROWTH UNLESS ACTIVELY TRAINED]
I accept the save, securing Mind Shield's compulsion protection as permanent capability I can recall regardless of current clone configuration.
[MIND SHIELD: SAVED AT 31%]
[SAVED SLOTS: 2/3]
[SLOT 1: DEFENSIVE SHIELD (76%)]
[SLOT 2: MIND SHIELD (31%)]
[SLOT 3: EMPTY]
Rose notices my brief distraction. "Your abilities—the clone network, the tactical prescience—they're growing, aren't they? Sam, I've known supernatural creatures for centuries. You're not just human with special powers. You're something else entirely."
"I'm someone trying to save Mystic Falls from Klaus's hybrid ambitions," I deflect. "The specifics of how don't change the goal."
"But they might change the cost," Rose warns. "Power always demands payment. Whatever system you're using—make sure the price doesn't exceed the benefit."
It's the second time someone's warned me about costs in as many weeks. Bonnie said similar things in Chicago. Now Rose, with five hundred years of supernatural experience, is echoing the concern.
"I'm careful," I promise.
After Rose and Trevor settle into the safe house and I've coordinated supply deliveries with Caroline's organizational efficiency, I return to my estate to find Caroline reviewing intelligence reports in my study.
"You're building an army," she observes without looking up. "A network of people who owe you favors, who trust your tactical genius, who believe you can actually win against Klaus. Rose and Trevor, Mason and Tyler, Damon and Stefan, even Elijah to some extent. Why?"
I settle beside her, exhaustion finally catching up after days of Chicago mission stress. "Because when Klaus wakes, we'll need every advantage. Every ally, every intelligence source, every tactical option."
"And you know when he'll wake," Caroline states, her voice carrying weight beyond simple observation.
I freeze. "I have projections based on—"
"Sam, stop," Caroline interrupts gently. "You don't have projections. You have knowledge. Prescient understanding of how supernatural events will unfold that goes beyond research or tactical genius. I've been documenting your predictions for weeks—Tyler's transformation details, Katherine's betrayal patterns, Klaus's network activation. You're right too consistently for it to be guessing."
The careful barriers I've maintained around my secrets crack under her analytical precision and genuine concern.
"What if I told you I've seen how this story unfolds?" I ask quietly. "What if I explained that I know Klaus's resurrection timeline, his siblings' personalities, even potential future events because I've witnessed versions of them before?"
Caroline processes this with her characteristic efficiency, connecting dots I've deliberately kept separated. "You're talking about something beyond just psychic visions. Sam, what are you really?"
I want to tell her. Want to explain transmigration, meta-knowledge, the impossible situation where I woke up in a fictional universe with System powers and foreknowledge of events that haven't happened yet.
But the System's secrecy requirements pulse like warning in the back of my mind, and I can't risk whatever cosmic consequences might follow complete disclosure.
"I can't explain fully," I admit. "Not yet. But Caroline, I promise—when I can tell you the complete truth, when it's safe and possible, I will."
She studies me for a long moment, then kisses my cheek gently. "I trust you. Even with secrets. But Sam, whatever you're hiding—it's hurting you to keep it contained. Don't let it destroy you."
We sit together in my parents' study surrounded by intelligence reports and supernatural documentation, two teenagers planning defensive strategies against thousand-year-old vampires with spreadsheets and shadow clone tactics.
Rose and Trevor are secured in the safe house. The moonstone fragment sits in my vault. Enhanced Speed permanence freed strategic options. Mind Shield saved at 31% provides compulsion defense flexibility.
[LEVEL 24 MAINTAINED]
[600/2,600 TO LEVEL 25]
[SAVED AFFINITIES: DEFENSIVE SHIELD (76%), MIND SHIELD (31%)]
[ONE SLOT AVAILABLE]
[PERMANENT AFFINITY: ENHANCED SPEED (100%)]
The coalition grows stronger with each alliance, each intelligence asset, each tactical advantage secured.
But Caroline's suspicions crystallize into near-certainty, Damon's observations accumulate, and eventually my secrets will demand explanation I can't provide without destroying the careful balance I've maintained.
Klaus's awakening approaches like storm on the horizon.
And somewhere in the tactical calculations and strategic planning, I'm running out of ways to hide that I know too much.
