Chapter 149 - Volume 3, Chapter 22: Silent Crown

The biting gale sweeping across the eastern ridge of Elbaf did not disperse the heavy tension lingering over the cliffside; it condensed it. High above the sea, on the jagged, frost-crusted granite, the silence between the two swordsmen stretched taut as a bowstring.

Giovanni took a slow, deliberate breath, steadying the rise and fall of his chest. The smarting cut across his right shoulder. A souvenir from their opening engagement dampened his torn black coat with a line of dark blood, but his posture remained upright and relaxed. Ace rested in his right hand, its legendary edge pointed toward the frozen rock at a slight angle. He was applying the lesson Gaban had hammered into him beneath Elbaf's roots: drawing his scattered spirit inward, stripping away the loud, wasteful torrents of ambition, and compressing his presence into a tight, quiet core.

Across the fractured stone, Dracule Mihawk stood completely untroubled. Yoru was held loosely, its broad cross-hilt casting a long shadow over the frost. His golden hawk-eyes were fixed entirely on Giovanni, tracking the subtle shift in the younger man's posture with calm, dangerous scrutiny.

Farther up the ridge, Prince Loki shifted his weight, his massive frame looming over the edge of the cliff. He held his giant greatsword braced against his shoulder, his knuckles white against the leather-wrapped hilt. Intending to step forward and crush both humans under his royal authority, Loki surged into a stride only to stall before his heavy boot could strike the rock.

The atmosphere around the two swordsmen had become thick, stifling, and utterly closed off. It was not an invisible wall or a physical barrier; it was the suffocating, concentrated density of two supreme wills focused entirely upon each other. The sheer weight of their gathered Conqueror's pressure pressed against Loki's senses like an iron weight. Instinctively, the giant prince's own Haki flared up to defend his pride, forcing him to scrape his foot backward against the granite to reset his balance.

Neither Giovanni nor Mihawk turned to look at him. To them, the giant prince had ceased to exist.

Giovanni moved first.

He adjusted his lead foot half a beat before Mihawk's shoulders even turned, sliding across the frost to slip beneath what should have been a heavy, diagonal downswing. His instincts warned him of the path Yoru would take.

But as Giovanni stepped inside the line, Mihawk's intent shifted in mid-motion.

Without hesitation, the predicted path of the broad blade vanished. The heavy downswing never came; instead, Yoru glided laterally, its razor edge turning into an ascending horizontal cleave that sought Giovanni's ribs.

'It's a trap.' Against Mihawk, the first warning was only a possibility. The moment Giovanni committed to an answer, Mihawk could change the question.

Giovanni twisted his torso backward, the icy wind of Yoru's pass whistling against the leather of his vest. He used the momentum of the near-miss to sweep Ace back into a guard position, resetting his stance before the blade could recover.

Sensing an opening as Mihawk completed the arc, Giovanni pressed forward. He lunged across the granite, driving Ace upward in a sharp, rising thrust designed to force Mihawk onto his heels.

Mihawk answered by lowering Yoru's point and bringing the blade across at a shallow angle to intercept.

The two supreme weapons rushed toward one another, closing the distance in a fraction of a second.

Yet, Ace and Yoru did not make physical contact.

A few inches apart, the steel of Roger's former cutlass and the abyss-like edge of the Night Sword froze in mid-air. Advanced Armament met in the narrow space between them, wrapped in thick, flowing strands of crimson-black Conqueror's coating.

Thin, jagged arcs of black-red lightning snapped violently back and forth across the gap. The sheer, compressed pressure did not blow outward into a dramatic shockwave; instead, it drove directly downward through their boots. Hairline cracks spiderwebbed through the ancient granite beneath their feet, sharp metallic snaps echoing across the ridge as the stone crumbled under the invisible weight.

Giovanni felt the immense, smothering force of Mihawk's posture pressing down against his wrists. The weight was a mountain resting on the edge of a blade. Recognizing that a contest of raw strength would break his guard, Giovanni yielded slightly, sliding his feet across the stone to roll off the impact and disengage.

Giovanni stepped back two paces, his breathing shallow but controlled. He lifted Ace, letting the blade swing in a wide, rhythmic arc. A cadence Mihawk had already seen in their previous encounters. It was a fluid sequence of three probing cuts followed by a decisive, accelerating cross-strike.

Mihawk's golden eyes narrowed slightly. He recognized the pattern instantly.

Giovanni completed the first two probing cuts with measured precision, then executed the third. Mihawk's guard settled exactly where the familiar final cross-strike should arrive, positioning Yoru's broad cross-guard to trap Ace's edge and disarm Giovanni on the turn.

Giovanni began the fourth stroke. His shoulders started to turn, signaling the expected surge of acceleration.

Then, at the final instant, he applied Gaban's lesson of sovereign stillness.

He did not force the weapon. He did not try to overpower Mihawk's prediction with speed or raw violence.

Instead, Giovanni relaxed completely.

The aggressive tension vanished from his neck and shoulders. His hips settled, his stance grounded itself into the granite, and he killed the expected surge of acceleration before it could manifest. Instead of driving Ace through the wide, sweeping finish that Mihawk had prepared for, Giovanni allowed his center of gravity to drop, shortening the cutlass's line and letting its natural weight guide the edge along a much narrower, tighter curve.

Yoru swept forward to intercept a heavy strike that never arrived.

In that tiny window created by relaxation and altered timing, Ace's abbreviated edge glided past Mihawk's guard.

A cold whisper of air brushed against Mihawk's left cheek.

A razor-thin, crimson line opened across the swordsman's skin. A single, dark red bead of blood welled up from the shallow cut, trickled down the sharp contour of Mihawk's jawline, and dripped into the frost below.

Giovanni's heart hammered against his ribs. A quiet, monumental sensation settled in his chest. It was not an illusion, nor was it a fluke granted by his opponent's carelessness. Through Gaban's harsh instruction, repeated failure, and a moment of genuine self-control, he had breached the defense of Dracule Mihawk and drawn his first blood.

It was a major milestone, but it was not proof of equality.

Mihawk did not flinch. He did not reach up to touch the blood on his face. Instead, a subtle, genuine curl of interest touched the corner of his mouth, and his hawk-like eyes flared with rare, burning focus.

Before Giovanni could draw Ace back to reset his guard, Mihawk answered.

Mihawk's wrist simply turned, reversing Yoru's momentum with terrifying, fluid perfection.

Slipping through the brief opening left by Giovanni's overextended follow-through, the massive black blade bypassed Giovanni's hastily reinforced guard entirely.

The razor-sharp edge of Yoru came to a dead halt. Exactly one breath from Giovanni's exposed throat.

Giovanni froze. The lethal chill radiating off the steel made the hair on his arms stand on end.

The cut on Mihawk's cheek changed nothing about the final truth: Mihawk was still the superior complete swordsman, capable of punishing a single recovery mistake before Giovanni could reset.

From the edge of the clearing, Prince Loki watched the silent climax of the exchange.

He saw the blood trickling down Mihawk's jaw. He saw the subtle, silent recognition passing between the two humans. An elite, elevated sphere of mastery that treated his royal giant bloodline as nothing more than background noise.

A surge of ugly jealousy and wounded pride twisted Loki's features into a snarl.

"ENOUGH!" Loki roared, his voice echoing off the mountain cliffs like thunder.

Igniting every drop of his wild, unstable Conqueror's Haki, the giant prince lunged forward, raising his colossal greatsword with both hands and bringing it down in a violent, reckless overhead strike aimed directly at Mihawk's blind side.

Mihawk did not flinch. He did not even shift his feet.

With Yoru still held steady near Giovanni's throat, Mihawk slowly turned his head, his golden hawk-eyes locking onto the descending giant prince with freezing disdain.

"You have mistaken my patience for weakness."
