"An agent trusting his gut, I've always admired that side of you Connor Hale." Her words answering Connor's question with a no. "Who are you and who do you work for?" Maya reached for his hand only to be swatted away. "Don't try anything funny Maya or your brains will be all over the car's interior."
Maya let out a sigh, as if unbothered with the gun aimed at her head. "I get that but I can't answer your question at this moment. Just know the person who wanted me to look into Andrew is equally suspicious of him as you are. We're all on the same side so can you aim that gun elsewhere?" Maya nonchalantly urged, her hands resting on her laps.
"Is it Callahan Voss for you to have driven there or someone else entirely?" His mind began to race, other than Callahan, he was unsure of who would be so interested in Andrew and have the funds to hire a private investigator like Maya. "Not a bad guess Connor."
Maya's words confirming his suspicion. "Is that all or is there something else you're hiding from me?!" His teeth gnashing while Maya adjusted her rear view mirror, an act that made Connor tighten his grip on his gun. "That's all Connor so can you aim that piece of metal away from my head already?"
His breathes short, his gaze laser focused on Maya before he slowly began to lower his gun. "Since we're now on the same page, I hope you can understand my predicament with Andrew. If he can have people right in front of him die on a call, then what's preventing him from killing us?" The thought disturbed Connor who put his gun back into his coat, his fists balling. "You say that you suspect that Andrew may already know that he's being watched and running this operation any further would result in unnecessary deaths so it's best to put an end to it."
"We'll pin him the illicit race as well too bring him in and-" Maya cut him off, her tone confident as ever. "About the race, there's been a particular fact that has been bothering me till now. Adrian and Andrew were meant to have a race yes but from Adrian's confession, he had planned to sabotage Andrew's car but that never happened. The person meant to handle that was a student called Matteo. One of Adrian's lackeys."
Connor recalled the night of the pursuit, still baffled that it was Andrew behind the wheel and Kevin's confession. "But strangely enough after the night, on lookers say that Matteo drove Brittany back home and after that Matteo has never reported for school. All of a sudden flying across to another state." Maya's words eliciting a deep frown from Connor. "It would seem that he was paid off by Andrew to make sure that he wouldn't sabotage the car then."
Maya tapped the wheels, both their minds rushing. "Yes however only more questions arise from this. How did Andrew know that Matteo would be the one tasked with sabotaging the car Andrew would drive. I've checked the other lackey s and they don't have any money. It was clear Andrew had targeted Matteo to begin with."
Maya brought the car back to life and drove away from the park and back to the precinct. "I was thinking that I could go check up on that lottery winner Matteo. Yeah…" Maya paused as if answering Connor's question of how Matteo explained his sudden wealth. "…He faked it under winning a lottery ticket and left the state. Now living a life of luxury and now investing. He's a bit of a party animal as well." The new information taking Connor by surprise. "Looks like Andrew had figured it all out from the beginning. From Adrian's sabotage and our investigations. What's to say that he's not listening right now?"
The car coming to a stop where Connor had been picked up. "There's no certainty and that's why I wanted to keep this case on the downlow for as long as possible. As for the operation, it doesn't have to keep on going with the bloodshed, it's Brittany whose giving out these orders. Just control her and I'm sure in due time Andrew should slip up." Connor left the car while Maya drove off.
*Ring*
Maya picked up the call, one hand on her wheel and the other clutching her phone. "Yes. He thinks that he knows everything. I'll be forced to leave the state since he knows who my purpose and try to look into me." The other end of the voice none other than Callahan. "You've done enough, I'm sure that the detective could take over you."
A pause settled, her voice uncertain. "Are you sure that it was wise in telling him that Brittany was the one behind these murders as it could implicate you and your daughter in the long run." Callahan shot back with his usual cool. "I'm aware, the pay should be sent to you soon. Make sure to look into Matteo, he has a higher chance of slipping up than Andrew."
. . .
'She's a complete ghost.' Connor sighed as he tried to look at Maya's origins with nothing coming up. 'As for the Voss family, to think that they would be in such a position.' Connor was at a loss on what to do with Brittany. 'I can't outright arrest her since there are links between the murders and her or Andrew, I guess I have to crack this case then.'
Tapping his desk, Connor let out a sigh as he prepared himself and drove to the Voss residence. The servant already expecting his presence as he was led to Callahan's office.
"I'm sure you have questions detective Connor Hale. Please, have a seat." Callahan's arm gesturing at the chair. Connor complied, his gaze locking with Callahan's murky eyes masked behind his glasses. "What does your suspicion of Andrew have to do with the deaths of the innocent?" Connor shot up, a question by Callahan's sigh something he had anticipated.
"You should know that with this case something was already off about that kid Andrew. Be is his perfect grades, his silence or his dead eyes, there's nothing right about him at all and with your help, you've proven my point." Callahan's clasped hands supporting his head, his composed face irritating Connor who balled his fists on his lap.
"Something like this could have you resulted with charge of murder and interfering with an active case, something I'm sure you don't want right now given your profession." Callahan leaned back into his chair, the comfort something he had grown used to. "I don't mind having the Voss name bastardized with interference of a case but the deaths are a completely different topic."
The most glaring part about it all were those who died had no ties to them. 'An interference charge won't do much to them.' Connor cursed as he looked into Callahan's facial features. The man had his cool, books behind him now sticking out to Connor as odd. "I'll make sure to expose Andrew while making sure you face the consequences of the deaths you've indirectly caused. Be it you or your daughter."
Callahan let out a chuckle, light. "I hope that you get to the bottom of this detective, after all letting a man like Andrew run loose with no restraint is only to ensure chaos and death." Connor let out a sigh, trying to calm down as the man seated opposite from him had yet to slip up. His words carefully crafted that wouldn't damage him should they be brought to light.
'Looks like deaths and killings are something that runs in this family for Brittany and Callahan to be this dismissive of the deaths they cause.' His mind rushed to Brittany's words to Pauline. "I'll be taking charge over this operation and your daughter will have to follow my exact words. This time without the killing."
Connor was greeted with an outstretched hand from Callahan. "Of course, anything to wrap this case up." Connor didn't bother shaking it. "Given how rogue you've been, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that you have something to do with Lara's disappearance." The air between the two tightened, Callahan still wearing his simple smile.
"It is a tragedy for a kidnapping to happen. After all the city is still recalling the incidents from a few months back." Callahan;s tone lacked the remorse that Connor had anticipated which further grew his suspicion of him. "I'll make sure to take you and your family down. As well as any other people you may have involved in this."
And with that Connor took his leave, Callahan retracting his hand before the smile vanished. 'Please detective Connor, I want you to get to the bottom of this but…' A mild head ache sprang in Callahan's head as he recalled about Brittany. "If she's careless with her lips, she could be my own undoing." His murmurs audible to him alone.
Connor who was leaving the Voss residence ran into the man he wanted to see behind bars. Andrew and in his embrace Brittany Voss. "Detective Connor, I hope that you found something on Pauline's murder." Brittany flashed her peaerls for teeth while Andrew remained dead pan.
"i hope you can keep that smug of yours when I'm done. " He didn't explain himself further as he got in his car and drove off. The pair made their way into the house. "Brittany, my office. Andrew. Thank you for showing my daughter her way back. I know that she could be a handful at times." Callahan's gaze resting on Brittany's figure, her smirk faintly irritating Callahan.
"Of course sir. I'll be taking my leave." Andrew urged before leaving. It wasn't long before Brittany was alone with her father but now not in his office but her bedroom. "Why didn't we go to your office?" She shot up as the door closed behind them. "I'm certain that Connor could have planted something during his visit so you'll have to be extremely careful with what you say."
Brittany collapsed on her king sized bed, the softness trying to swallow her whole. "It's a shame that Maya had to leave. I was starting to like her." Callahan had an incredulous expression shot at her daughter. "Do you have a reason as to why you're so careless? At this point it feels like you're trying to get caught."
With her legs dangling over the edge, she blankly stared at the ceiling. "Why would I be careful when I have my precious Andy? If Connor steps out of line, I could have him kill Connor. Any more interested and they'll be gone as well." Callahan couldn't believe the response he was given. "Are you crazy? If officers start trying to look into him, it won't be long before we are dragged with him! So you can't kill your way out of this one."
His words didn't seem to reach Brittany who grunted, trying to switch her posture on her bed before she settled on lying on her stomach, her hands supporting her head with a playful smile meeting Callahan. "If you're so scared of Andrew, just say so father. I can promise you that he won't kill you…quickly that is." Callahan let out a groan, his face cupped as he crashed onto a nearby chair.
"You really do think that you are untouchable, huh? Or did you forget that he is capable of denying your requests? And with Maya gone, we don't know much progress Connor makes so we have to be extra careful from now on. Do you hear me Brittany?" The lady was now turned, lying on her back facing the ceiling once more.
"I hear you dad, perfectly fine." Callahan narrowed his gaze. "Then from now on it would be best for you to avoid Andrew." His words jolting Brittany out of her aloof state, her face etched with confoundment. "What does me avoiding Andrew have to do with us solving those behind him? Besides wouldn't it better for us to keep him around? He can kill whoever looks at us the wrong way."
