The man didn't answer. His eyes had already closed, his head still resting against the stone wall. Whatever brief spark had driven him to speak was gone. He had retreated back into himself, shutting the door to his brain behind him.
Moon watched him for a few seconds, he could push harder, demand an answer. The man was weak enough that his pressure would probably crack him open. But Moon didn't move.
He wasn't going to oppress a broken man.
There was still a chance that nobody had sent him at all. That he was just another lost soul rotting near the portal, and Moon's brief emergence had stirred something in him long enough to string a few bitter words together before the emptiness swallowed him again.
Moon turned and walked away. Behind him, the man didn't open his eyes.
Moon traversed the corridors he had memorized and soon arrived at the large chamber. The scene inside was split down the middle.
