Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Midnight Infiltration

The night of the new moon was a thief's blessing, a blanket of profound darkness thrown over the Starfall Sect. Two shadows, quieter than falling snow, moved along the high, winding paths that led towards the pulsating heart of the forbidden zone.

"Patrol," Ye Xingliu whispered, his voice a breath barely stirring the air. His Life Sensing, stretched to its limit, painted a map of living energy in his mind. Two inner disciples, their auras bright with vigilance and boredom, marched along a lower ridge.

Feng Shui'er didn't need to be told. With a subtle flick of her wrist, she wove a curtain of mist and distorted air around them, bending the scant starlight away. They became nothing more than a ripple in the night, pressed against the cold stone until the patrol passed.

This was their dance. Ye Xingliu, the navigator, sensing the rhythms of guards and spiritual pressure. Shui'er, the veil, manipulating wind and water to erase their presence. And Little Comet, tucked deep in Ye Xingliu's pocket, its light completely suppressed, acting as a silent, jittery compass.

"The arrays are thick here," Ye Xingliu murmured, his senses tingling with dissonance. The air ahead was crisscrossed with invisible lines of force, a spiderweb of protective formations meant to shred intruders. "There's a gap. Low, to the left. It pulses… every three heartbeats."

"A three-beat window," Shui'er nodded, her face a mask of concentration. "On my mark… now!"

They moved as one, a single fluid entity. They dropped and rolled under the pulsing lattice of energy, feeling the deadly power whisper inches above their backs. They came up running, not stopping until they were deep within the unnaturally silent woods of the forbidden zone.

The air here was different. Heavier. It tasted of ozone and age. The very spiritual energy was wild, untamed, and tinged with a melancholy that sank into the bones.

But the compass in Ye Xingliu's pocket was a beacon of certainty. Its pull was magnetic, irresistible. They followed it through gnarled, petrified trees and over streams that flowed with water black as ink, until they emerged into a clearing.

And there it was.

The Stellar Stele.

It was a monolith of pure, dark obsidian, so tall it seemed to scrape the belly of the night sky. Its surface was not smooth. It was covered in intricate, glowing runes that pulsed with a soft, silver light. They were not carved; they looked as if they had been seared into the stone by the fingers of a god—constellations, celestial maps, and equations of cosmic motion written in a language lost to time. The air around it hummed with a profound, ancient power.

"It's… beautiful," Shui'er breathed, all fear forgotten in the face of its majesty.

"The key," Ye Xingliu said, his own voice hushed. He pulled the ancient, wooden key from his robe. As he held it up, the runes on the Stellar Stele flared in recognition, their light brightening, their hum rising in pitch.

At the base of the monolith, exactly at the center of the swirling runes, was a keyhole shaped like a crescent moon embracing a star.

With a steady hand, his heart hammering against his ribs, Ye Xingliu stepped forward and inserted the key.

It fit perfectly.

With a sound that was less a grind of stone and more a deep, resonant chime that vibrated through the fabric of reality, the center of the Stellar Stele dissolved. The runes swirled, collapsing inwards to form a shimmering, vertical pool of liquid silver, flecked with countless points of light. It was a portal. A doorway hanging in the air, showing nothing of what lay beyond but an abyss of captivating, brilliant darkness.

A wave of pure, concentrated starlight energy washed over them, so potent it made Ye Xingliu's 20%-awakened spirit sing. Little Comet poked its head out, its own light flaring in sympathetic resonance.

They stood at the threshold. The forbidden ground had given up its first secret.

The real adventure was just beginning.
