Chapter 3: The Forgotten Sanctuary
The crimson eyes vanished as quickly as they had appeared.
Yet the feeling remained.
The feeling of being watched.
Neither Elara nor Kael spoke as they extinguished the campfire. The cheerful crackling that had warmed the night disappeared beneath damp earth, leaving only darkness and the pale glow of the moon above.
Kael's expression had changed completely.
The warmth she had seen only moments ago was gone.
His face had become unreadable once again.
"Kael..." Elara called quietly.
He was already gathering their belongings.
"We're leaving."
"Now?"
"Now."
"The sun hasn't even risen."
"That's exactly why."
His voice carried an urgency she had never heard before.
He wasn't simply cautious anymore.
He was afraid.
They traveled through the forest without stopping.
The night seemed endless.
The deeper they went, the stranger the forest became.
Trees taller than castle towers reached toward the heavens.
Flowers glowed with faint blue light.
Tiny silver butterflies floated through the darkness, disappearing whenever Elara tried to touch them.
"This place..."
She looked around in amazement.
"...it's beautiful."
"It wasn't always."
Kael didn't slow his pace.
"This used to be the heart of the Moonfang Kingdom."
She stopped walking.
"Kingdom?"
He looked back.
"You thought we lived in caves?"
A faint smile appeared on his lips.
Elara blushed.
"I... maybe."
He chuckled softly.
"Our people built cities long before humans crossed these forests."
"Then where are they?"
His smile faded.
"They're buried."
Hours later they reached the ruins.
Elara forgot how to breathe.
Massive stone pillars stretched into the sky.
Ancient staircases disappeared beneath roots thicker than houses.
Broken statues lined a road almost completely swallowed by nature.
Despite centuries of decay...
The place was magnificent.
Moonlight reflected from white stone, making the entire city glow like silver.
"It..."
She whispered.
"...it's beautiful."
Kael stood quietly beside her.
"This was Lunaris."
"The capital?"
He nodded.
"My home."
There was so much sadness in those two words that Elara's heart tightened.
She imagined children laughing through these streets.
Families gathering beneath the glowing trees.
Moonfang warriors protecting their people.
Now...
Nothing remained except silence.
Kael led her toward the center of the city.
They eventually stopped before enormous stone gates covered in glowing runes.
Each door stood nearly thirty feet tall.
In the center was the symbol she had begun seeing everywhere—
A crescent moon wrapped around a wolf.
Kael placed one hand on the symbol.
Nothing happened.
He frowned.
"It should have opened."
Elara stepped closer.
"What if..."
She hesitated.
"...it needs both of us?"
Kael looked at her.
Then slowly nodded.
"Place your hand here."
She lifted her marked hand and pressed it beside his.
The instant her skin touched the stone—
The mark blazed.
Silver light raced through every rune carved into the gates.
The entire city trembled.
Deep beneath the earth...
Ancient mechanisms awakened.
Stone groaned.
Dust fell from forgotten ceilings.
The gates slowly began to open.
Kael stared in disbelief.
"It opened..."
His voice was barely audible.
"It hasn't opened since the fall of the clan."
Beyond the gates lay a staircase descending into darkness.
Cool air drifted upward.
Ancient.
Untouched.
Waiting.
Kael looked at Elara.
"I don't know what we'll find down there."
She smiled nervously.
"I guess we're about to find out."
Together...
They stepped into the forgotten sanctuary beneath the Moonfang Kingdom.
Neither of them noticed the shadow watching from the ruined rooftops above.
Two glowing red eyes followed their every step.
Then the shadow disappeared into the forest.
Not to attack.
But to report.
"The heir has returned..."
A cold voice echoed through the darkness.
"...and he did not return alone."
The ancient staircase spiraled deep beneath the ruins of Lunaris.
Each step echoed through the darkness, the sound traveling farther than it should have, as though the sanctuary itself was listening.
Elara ran her fingers along the stone wall beside her. Strange carvings covered every surface—wolves standing beneath full moons, warriors kneeling before silver trees, and women whose wrists bore the same crescent-shaped mark as hers.
She stopped.
"Kael..."
He turned.
She pointed at one of the carvings.
"This woman..."
The carving showed a young woman standing beside a towering wolf with glowing eyes. Their hands were joined, and the same silver mark shone on both of their wrists.
"...she has my mark."
Kael walked closer.
For several long seconds, he simply stared.
His face slowly lost its color.
"I've seen this before," he whispered.
"You have?"
He nodded.
"My mother showed me these carvings when I was a child."
"What did she say?"
Kael's eyes remained fixed on the stone.
"She called them the Moon Brides."
Elara frowned.
"Moon Brides?"
"They weren't wives."
He shook his head.
"Not in the way humans think."
He gently brushed centuries of dust from the carving.
"The Moon Bride was a human chosen by the Moon to stand beside the Alpha. Together they protected the balance between humans and Moonfang."
Elara looked at her wrist again.
"So..."
Her voice became almost inaudible.
"...you're saying someone like me existed before?"
"Yes."
Kael's answer came quietly.
"But according to history..."
His expression darkened.
"...they all disappeared hundreds of years ago."
A cold feeling settled in Elara's stomach.
If they had all disappeared...
Why had the Moon chosen her now?
They continued deeper until the staircase finally ended.
A vast underground hall stretched before them.
Elara gasped.
Hundreds of crystal pillars rose from the floor to the ceiling, glowing with soft silver light. Streams of clear water flowed between them, reflecting thousands of tiny stars that somehow shone underground.
"It looks like the night sky..." she whispered.
Kael smiled faintly.
"It was designed that way."
He looked around slowly.
"My father used to bring me here."
His voice softened with memory.
"He said every Moonfang should remember that no matter how dark the world becomes... the moon still shines somewhere."
For a brief moment, Elara saw not the powerful heir of a cursed clan—
But the lonely little boy he once was.
She wanted to say something comforting.
Instead, she simply walked beside him.
Sometimes silence was kinder than words.
At the center of the hall stood an enormous silver tree.
Unlike the trees outside, this one had no leaves.
Its branches were made entirely of crystal.
Even after centuries, it glowed with quiet beauty.
Kael stopped walking.
"The Heart Tree..."
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"It survived."
Elara stepped closer.
As soon as she came within a few steps of the tree, the mark on her wrist began to shine.
The crystal branches trembled.
One by one...
Tiny silver leaves began growing from the empty limbs.
Kael stared in disbelief.
"No..."
More leaves appeared.
Then flowers.
Within seconds, the dead tree burst into life, filling the hall with silver blossoms that drifted gently through the air.
The entire sanctuary awakened.
Crystals brightened.
Ancient lanterns lit themselves.
The streams sparkled like liquid moonlight.
A deep bell echoed through the underground city.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Kael's expression changed instantly.
"Someone heard that."
"Who?"
"I don't know..."
Before he could finish, heavy footsteps echoed through the hall.
Not one pair.
Many.
Elara instinctively moved closer to Kael.
Out of the shadows stepped six armored figures.
Their silver armor was worn with age, yet polished as though no time had passed. Each carried a long spear, and wolf-shaped helmets concealed their faces.
They surrounded the pair in complete silence.
Elara's heartbeat quickened.
"Kael..."
One of the warriors raised a spear.
Another stepped forward.
Then, in a voice deep and calm, the figure spoke.
"State your name."
Kael slowly stepped in front of Elara.
"I am Kael..."
He drew a steady breath.
"...son of Alpha Orion of the Moonfang Clan."
Silence.
Then every warrior suddenly dropped to one knee.
Their spears lowered.
One fist rested over each heart.
The leader removed his helmet, revealing an elderly man with silver hair and piercing blue eyes.
Tears filled the old warrior's eyes.
"Our prince..."
His voice trembled.
"...you finally came home."
The old warrior remained on one knee, his head bowed.
Behind him, the other five guardians did the same.
The underground sanctuary fell into complete silence.
Kael didn't move.
For several seconds, he simply stared at them, as though afraid they would disappear if he blinked.
"...Stand."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
The old warrior slowly rose.
Tears still glistened in his weathered eyes.
"I never believed I would live long enough to see the blood of Alpha Orion return to Lunaris."
Kael swallowed.
"My name is Elder Rowan."
He placed a fist over his heart.
"I was Captain of the Royal Moonfang Guard."
Kael's breathing became uneven.
"My father..."
His words caught in his throat.
"You knew him?"
Rowan smiled sadly.
"I would have gladly given my life for him."
The answer hit Kael harder than any weapon.
For years, he had believed every member of his father's court had died.
Yet here stood one of the men who had protected the royal family.
Alive.
Kael lowered his head.
"I thought..."
His voice cracked.
"I thought I was the last."
Rowan stepped forward.
"You were never alone, Your Highness."
Those four words shattered something inside Kael.
Before he could stop himself, tears gathered in his eyes.
He turned away quickly.
He refused to let anyone see them.
But Elara had already noticed.
Without speaking, she quietly stepped beside him.
She didn't touch him.
She simply stood there.
Close enough that he knew he wasn't facing the past alone.
Kael looked at her from the corner of his eye.
For the first time in years...
The crushing weight on his shoulders felt just a little lighter.
Rowan's attention shifted to Elara.
His expression immediately changed.
His eyes widened in disbelief.
"The mark..."
Every guardian turned toward her.
One by one, their eyes settled on the glowing crescent on her wrist.
One of the younger guards gasped.
"It can't be..."
Another whispered,
"A Moon Bride..."
The hall erupted into murmurs.
Elara instinctively hid her wrist behind her back.
"I... I don't know what any of this means."
Rowan slowly approached her.
His movements were careful.
Respectful.
"May I see your hand, Lady?"
She hesitated.
Kael noticed.
"It's alright."
His voice was calm.
"You can trust them."
She slowly held out her hand.
The old captain gently examined the glowing mark.
His fingers trembled.
"It truly has returned..."
He closed his eyes.
"The prophecy wasn't lost after all."
Elara looked between Rowan and Kael.
"What prophecy?"
The entire hall fell silent.
No one answered immediately.
Finally Rowan spoke.
"Long before the curse..."
He looked toward the crystal tree.
"...the Moon Goddess chose one human soul every generation."
"A Moon Bride."
"She was never chosen because she was powerful."
"She was chosen because she possessed a heart capable of protecting both humans and Moonfang alike."
Elara listened carefully.
"The Alpha was the sword."
"The Moon Bride..."
He smiled gently.
"...was the light that kept the sword from becoming a monster."
Kael looked away.
His expression darkened.
"So that's why the curse destroyed the clan."
Rowan nodded slowly.
"When the last Moon Bride disappeared..."
"The Alphas slowly lost themselves."
Silence followed.
Heavy.
Meaningful.
Elara finally understood.
The bond wasn't simply magic.
It was balance.
Suddenly—
BOOM!
The entire sanctuary shook violently.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Several crystal branches snapped from the Heart Tree.
Everyone froze.
Another explosion echoed through the tunnels.
One of the younger guards rushed toward Rowan.
"Elder!"
"Something has breached the outer barrier!"
Kael's eyes narrowed.
"Impossible."
"The sanctuary has been hidden for centuries."
A third explosion answered him.
This one much closer.
The silver flames inside every lantern flickered violently.
Rowan's face became pale.
"They found us."
Kael stepped forward immediately.
"Who?"
The old captain looked directly into his eyes.
His voice was barely a whisper.
"The Blood Hunters."
Elara frowned.
"The hunters from my village?"
Rowan slowly shook his head.
"No."
"Those men were only soldiers."
His expression became grave.
"The Blood Hunters are an order that has hunted Moonfang royalty for over six hundred years."
"They don't stop."
"They don't negotiate."
"They don't forgive."
Kael's hands clenched into fists.
"They followed us..."
"No."
Rowan looked toward the massive entrance.
"They were already searching."
Another explosion.
Closer.
Stone cracked somewhere above them.
The sanctuary's ancient alarm bells began ringing throughout the underground city.
The peaceful reunion was over.
War...
Had finally reached Lunaris.
The warning bells echoed throughout the underground city.
Dong...
Dong...
Dong...
Their deep metallic sound rolled through every hallway, awakening a place that had slept for centuries.
The Moonfang Guardians sprang into action.
Some rushed toward the entrance with spears in hand.
Others lit silver torches lining the walls.
The peaceful sanctuary transformed into a fortress within moments.
Elder Rowan turned toward Kael.
"Your Highness, you must come with me."
Kael shook his head.
"No."
The old captain frowned.
"The Blood Hunters are here because of me."
His golden eyes hardened.
"I won't hide while others fight."
"You are the last Alpha."
"And they're my people."
Kael's voice was calm but carried the authority of a king.
"If they risk their lives for me, then I will stand beside them."
The guardians exchanged glances.
Rowan slowly smiled.
"Just like your father..."
Elara watched him quietly.
The Kael she had met in the forest had always seemed like a lone wolf—someone who carried every burden alone.
Now she saw something different.
A prince.
Someone born to protect others.
It made her heart ache.
Before she realized what she was doing, she stepped beside him.
"I'm staying too."
Kael immediately turned.
"No."
"I'm not leaving."
"This isn't your fight."
Her blue eyes met his golden ones.
"It became my fight the moment they attacked my home."
Kael opened his mouth to argue.
She interrupted him.
"You said the bond chose me."
He nodded.
"You said we're connected."
Another nod.
"Then stop trying to protect me by pushing me away."
Silence.
Rowan looked between the two of them but wisely said nothing.
Kael sighed.
"You are unbelievably stubborn."
A small smile appeared on Elara's face.
"I've heard that before."
For a second...
Very briefly...
Kael smiled too.
A young guardian hurried into the hall.
"Elder Rowan!"
"They've broken through the first gate!"
"How many?"
"Nearly fifty."
The smile disappeared from every face.
Fifty.
That wasn't a hunting party.
That was an army.
Rowan's expression darkened.
"They planned this."
Kael nodded slowly.
"They've been searching for Lunaris."
"For years."
The old captain led them through a narrow corridor beneath the sanctuary.
Unlike the grand halls above, these passages were simple and lined with old paintings.
Elara slowed her steps.
One painting caught her eye.
It showed a young Moon Bride standing beside an Alpha beneath a full moon.
They weren't embracing.
They weren't holding hands.
Instead...
They stood shoulder to shoulder, facing a battlefield together.
At the bottom of the painting were ancient words carved into silver stone.
Elara couldn't read them.
"What does it say?"
Kael stopped beside her.
He looked at the faded inscription.
His expression softened.
"It says..."
'Love is not the chain that binds two souls. It is the choice they make every day to protect one another.'
Elara looked at him.
Something about those words lingered in the silence between them.
Neither spoke.
Neither needed to.
The corridor finally ended at a circular chamber.
At its center stood a stone pedestal.
Resting upon it was a magnificent sword.
Its blade shone like polished silver.
Blue runes glowed softly along its edge.
The hilt resembled a wolf with wings spread wide.
Kael froze.
"No..."
Rowan smiled.
"It waited for you."
"What is it?" Elara asked.
"The Moonfang King's sword."
Rowan's voice filled with pride.
"Lunaris."
Kael slowly approached the pedestal.
"I watched my father carry this sword."
His hand trembled slightly.
"I thought it had been destroyed."
"It refused to be wielded by anyone except the true Alpha."
The moment Kael wrapped his fingers around the hilt—
The sword burst into brilliant silver light.
The runes awakened one by one.
A powerful wave of energy spread through the chamber.
Every guardian immediately bowed.
"The Alpha has returned."
Kael looked at the sword in silence.
It felt familiar.
Heavy.
Comforting.
Almost...
Like home.
Suddenly—
A loud crash echoed from somewhere above.
The ceiling shook violently.
Stone dust rained down.
A guardian burst into the chamber, bleeding from his shoulder.
"Elder!"
"They're inside the sanctuary!"
Everyone became still.
"They broke the second gate."
Rowan drew his weapon.
"Form defensive positions!"
The guardians ran.
Kael turned toward Elara.
"Stay behind me."
She frowned.
"I'm not helpless."
"I know."
His voice softened.
"But I..."
He stopped himself.
She tilted her head.
"You what?"
Kael looked away.
"...I'd rather get hurt myself than see anything happen to you."
Elara's heart skipped.
Before she could answer—
A chilling laugh echoed through the hallway.
Not loud.
Not rushed.
Confident.
Slow.
Boots echoed against stone.
One...
Two...
Three...
A man stepped into the chamber wearing black armor decorated with crimson markings.
Unlike the other hunters, he carried no spear.
Only a long black sword rested over his shoulder.
His silver hair reached his shoulders.
A scar crossed one eye.
And he was smiling.
His gaze swept across the room before settling on Kael.
"So..."
he said calmly,
"I finally found the last prince."
Then his eyes shifted toward Elara.
The smile widened.
"And the Moon Bride."
The air suddenly became impossibly cold.
Kael stepped in front of Elara without hesitation.
His golden eyes glowed fiercely.
The stranger laughed.
"My name is Commander Lucien Ashcroft."
He pointed his sword directly at Kael.
"I've spent fifteen years searching for your head."
The bells continued ringing.
The guardians tightened their grips on their weapons.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
The first true battle for Lunaris...
Was about to begin.
The chamber remained frozen in silence.
Lucien's crimson eyes never left Kael, but after a moment they drifted back to Elara. There was no hatred in his expression—only curiosity.
"So," he said with a faint smile, "the Moon has chosen again. After all these centuries... how interesting."
Elara felt the mark on her wrist pulse beneath her sleeve. She instinctively stepped closer to Kael, and without looking at her, he reached back until his hand found hers. His fingers closed around hers firmly, a silent promise that he would not let her face this alone.
Lucien noticed the gesture and chuckled.
"Protect her well, Prince," he said. "Because the next time we meet... I won't leave empty-handed."
The torches flickered as a cold wind swept through the chamber, carrying with it the scent of rain and steel.
Far above the sanctuary, thunder rumbled across the night sky.
The battle for Lunaris had begun.
