Chapter 60 - Chapter 60 – Beneath the Pines

They didn't speak until the fire was lit.

The pines formed a dark wall around their small camp, the snow a soft blanket under their boots. The wind carried the faint scent of pine resin and burnt wood, but beneath it lingered something else—the bitter edge of whatever the illusions had dug up.

Ruo Han sat with his back to a tree, knees drawn up, watching the flames curl and twist. His hands were steady now, but Xiyue noticed the way he kept touching the side of his neck—where the phantom brand had burned.

Ling Han was quieter than usual, sharpening his blade in slow, precise strokes. Every drag of steel against stone was deliberate, as if it could grind away the memory of chains.

Xiyue stared into the fire a long time before breaking the silence.

Xiyue: "What we saw… it wasn't just tricks."

Ruo Han's eyes flicked to him. "I know."

Xiyue: "Then you also know it showed the things we try hardest to hide."

Ling Han's sharpening stopped. His gaze stayed on the blade. "Some things deserve to stay hidden."

The fire popped. Ruo Han didn't look away from Xiyue when he spoke again.

Ruo Han: "And some… deserve to be seen."

There was no accusation in his voice—only a quiet challenge.

Xiyue held his gaze for a moment, then looked at Ling Han. "The chains. Who put them there?"

Ling Han's jaw tightened. "Not important."

Ruo Han, softly: "It is to me."

For the first time since the fight, Ling Han looked up. His eyes were dark and unreadable, but something in them flickered. "Then maybe you'll find out when I trust you enough to tell you."

The words should have been cold, but instead they sat heavy between them, thick with a strange kind of promise.

Xiyue leaned back, letting the firelight paint his features in gold and shadow. "Then we make it through this mission alive… and you tell us."

Ling Han gave no answer, but the smallest curve touched the corner of his mouth.

Ruo Han's lips quirked in response, though his eyes stayed sharp. "Alive, then. We'll see if you keep your word, Lan Xiyue."

And for the rest of the night, no one spoke of the illusions again—but the air around the fire was warmer, not from the flames, but from the fragile thread that now tied the three of them together.
