Chapter 12 - Control Over Power

Luxen Town's arena filled once more with energy as participants and spectators returned to their seats, the earlier break doing nothing to dull the excitement. Conversations buzzed through the stands until the host's amplified voice echoed across the battlefield.

"The tournament shall now resume! Next battle Faye from Rivera versus Will from Luxen!"

A ripple of anticipation moved through the crowd.

Vyvian leaned toward Will first, offering him a bright smile. "Good luck, Will."

Then she turned to Faye, eyes gleaming mischievously. "You're definitely not winning this."

Faye simply smirked, unfazed.

Rem remained seated, arms loosely folded, his gaze steady on the arena. He didn't speak. He was already analyzing.

Faye and Will stepped onto the battlefield.

Will scratched the back of his head lightly and grinned. "Let's do our best."

"Yeah," Faye replied casually, though her eyes were sharp.

The signal was given.

Golden-brown Qi swirled around Will's body as he transformed. Fur spread across his arms and shoulders, his physique tightening into lean muscle. His limbs lengthened slightly, movements growing lighter, more elastic. A long tail flicked behind him, and his eyes gleamed with playful sharpness.

A monkey hybrid.

Across from him, crimson light shimmered around Faye.

Soft auburn fur flowed along her arms and legs. Her ears sharpened atop her head, and fangs glinted faintly between her lips. Behind her,a fox tail unfurled.

A fox hybrid.

The crowd fell silent.

Will moved first.

He quickly dashed in front of Faye, his leg whipping upward toward her face.

Faye barely tilted her head in time. The kick sliced through empty air, grazing strands of her hair.

She countered instantly.

Orange Qi condensed in her palm before erupting into flame. She hurled the fire forward in a blazing arc.

Will flipped backward midair, spinning with fluid precision. As he landed, wind spiraled around his hands and formed a tight vortex.

The gust collided with the incoming flames.

The fire scattered and died.

"Slash!"

Will compressed the swirling wind into a thin, nearly invisible blade and released it.

There was no visible projectile.

No sound just impact.

Faye's body jerked as something struck her side, sending her skidding across the ground.

The audience gasped.

"They didn't even see anything!"

"What hit her?!"

Even some participants leaned forward.

Faye slowly pushed herself up, eyes narrowing. So that's how it is.

Flames erupted around her body.Heat distorted the air as she dashed forward in a blazing streak.

Will sidestepped the initial charge, narrowly avoiding direct contact.

But Faye twisted mid-motion.

The flames surrounding her suddenly burst outward.

Will's eyes widened.

The delayed explosion struck him squarely, launching him backward.

Vyvian shot to his feet. "Woah! That was cool!"

Rem gave a small nod, eyes never leaving the field.

Will rolled and sprang back up, shaking off the burn marks on his fur. Wind began spiraling violently around him, faster and faster.

"Violent Tornado!"

The air howled.

A towering vortex formed around him, spiraling upward with terrifying force. Dust, debris, and loose fabric from the audience seats trembled as the pull intensified.

Even spectators felt themselves slightly dragged forward.

Faye dug her feet into the ground, claws scraping against ground.

The suction grew stronger.

Her tails whipped wildly as she fought to maintain balance, but the force overwhelmed her. She was lifted off the ground and dragged into the spiraling wind.

The crowd held its breath.

Faye spun helplessly within the tornado.

Wind battered her from every direction.

But her eyes sharpened.

If she couldn't fight the wind

She would consume it.

Orange flames began igniting around her body.

Layer by layer, she expelled fire into the vortex's core.

Will, focused on increasing the tornado's power, didn't immediately notice.

The flames spread.

They clung to the rotating wind.

Fed on its oxygen.

The vortex slowly turned from gray to orange.

Will's expression changed.

"Wait"

The tornado erupted into a spiraling inferno.

Heat replaced wind.

Will lost control instantly as the structure collapsed.

The vortex shattered, and he stumbled forward, disoriented and off-balance.

Faye landed smoothly amidst fading embers.

She didn't hesitate.

Flames gathered around her fist.

One step.

Two

A blazing punch struck Will squarely in the torso.

The impact echoed through the arena.

Will's body lifted slightly before dropping motionless onto the battlefield.

Silence.

Then

The arena exploded into cheers.

The host raised his hand high.

"Winner Faye from Rivera!"

Crimson light faded as Faye returned to her human form, brushing ash from her sleeve with quiet confidence before walking back.

Rem looked at her calmly. "That was pretty good."

Faye blinked once, then smiled faintly. "Thanks."

Vyvian nearly bounced in place. "That was very cool! You turned his tornado into fire!"

Faye only smirked and gave a small nod.

As Will was helped up, he waved off assistance and walked toward the exit. Before leaving the battlefield, he turned back toward them with a faint, genuine smile.

"Good luck in the rest of the battles," he said. "Meet me before you leave town."

There was no bitterness in his voice.

Only respect.

"Thanks!" Vyvian called out.

Faye lifted a hand casually.

Rem gave him a firm nod.

Will left the arena quietly.

Soon after, the host's voice echoed once more across the arena.

"Next battle. Cherri from Wrathen versus Thorne from Patyra."

Vyvian leaned forward immediately. "Hey, it's her turn. Let's see what she's capable of."

Rem and Faye both nodded, their attention sharpening.

Cherri stepped onto the battlefield with calm confidence. There was no hesitation in her stride.

From the opposite side, Thorne walked in lazily.

He appeared slightly older than most participants. His brown and white clothes hung loosely over his broad frame. Green hair fell messily over his forehead, and his black eyes carried a dull, almost uninterested look.

Yet beneath that careless exterior, something heavy lingered.

The signal was given.

Cherri transformed first.

Black feathers erupted outward, engulfing her body in a dark swirl. Massive wings tore free from her back, spreading wide with commanding presence. Her eyes burned crimson. Her fingers sharpened into talons, legs reshaping into powerful avian limbs built for both speed and precision. A sleek black beak formed over her lips.

A raven hybrid.

The arena fell silent again.

Thorne exhaled slowly.

His body began to swell as thick brown fur spread across his frame. Muscles expanded violently beneath his skin. His posture straightened, slouch replaced with crushing weight. His hands enlarged into massive paws tipped with blunt yet deadly claws. His jaw extended slightly, revealing heavy fangs as a low growl escaped his throat.

A bear hybrid.

Thorne clenched his fists as green Qi burst around him.

"Maximum Input."

The aura intensified instantly, swirling violently.

"This ability increases my brute strength," he said calmly, a smirk tugging at his lips. "The more damage I take, the faster and stronger I become. But it drains my Qi."

He revealed it without fear.

Cherri did not respond.

She raised one wing.

Dozens of razor-sharp black feathers formed in the air and shot toward Thorne like a storm of blades.

They struck his body and embedded into his fur.

Thorne felt it immediately.

His Qi was being drained.

He frowned but ignored it.

With terrifying speed for someone his size, he leapt upward.

In an instant he closed the distance and drove a heavy punch straight into Cherri's torso.

The impact slammed her into the ground.

Gasps erupted from the audience.

Thorne raised his fist to finish it with a crushing slam.

But Cherri rolled aside at the last second. The ground shattered where his fist struck.

She rose smoothly.

The damage from the earlier punch faded almost instantly.

With a faint smirk she said, "Those feathers aren't healthy for you."

Thorne's eyes narrowed.

He could feel it now.

The feathers were draining his Qi and transferring it to her. Healing her. Restoring her reserves.

He tried ripping them out.

They dissolved into energy and reformed.

Before he could react further, Cherri spun and kicked him directly in the face.

The strike snapped his head back.

From the stands, Rem narrowed his eyes.

"What a terrifying ability," he muttered quietly. "I wonder if she has more to it."

Vyvian and Faye watched in full focus.

The crowd roared with excitement.

Thorne growled and increased his output.

Green Qi exploded outward violently.

The ground beneath his feet cracked from pressure alone.

The embedded feathers vaporized under the surge of energy.

Cherri darted forward and attempted another kick, but Thorne leapt high into the air, his massive frame casting a shadow over her.

He came down with full force.

Cherri barely evaded it, the shockwave knocking her off balance. She dropped to one knee.

For the first time, the pressure was real.

She closed her eyes briefly.

"Feather Drain,Chaos."

Her body lifted slowly into the air.

A crimson aura spread around her as countless black feathers began swirling in a controlled storm. Unlike before, these did not need to embed themselves.

They moved freely.

Thorne was breathing heavier now. His Qi consumption was accelerating.

Still, he roared and launched himself forward for another devastating punch.

The moment he entered the storm of feathers, the draining intensified.

His movements slowed midair.

His strength wavered.

The swirling feathers absorbed his Qi directly from the air around him.

Then something changed.

The feathers, now saturated with stolen energy, shot toward his body and attached themselves across his fur.

A heartbeat of silence.

They detonated simultaneously.

The explosion sent Thorne crashing into the arena floor.

Dust filled the battlefield.

When it settled, Thorne lay motionless.

The entire arena was stunned.

This was not brute force defeating brute force.

This was precision. Control. Strategy.

The host raised his hand.

"Winner of this round. Cherri from Wrathen."

The audience erupted into thunderous applause.

Cherri returned to her human form and walked back calmly, as if the result had always been obvious.

Vyvian smiled brightly. "Congratulations!"

Cherri gave her a faint smirk. "Be prepared to face me in an upcoming battle. It could be anytime."

Faye exhaled slowly. "That bear guy's ability seemed so strong. But Cherri's mastery and ability are terrifying."

Rem nodded once.

"Indeed."

The tournament was growing more dangerous by the round.

And the real battles were only beginning.

The cheers slowly faded, but the tension in the arena did not.

With every round, the gap between ordinary strength and true mastery became clearer.
