⚔️ Chapter 25:
The giant Ether-formed figure towered over Kairu, its silhouette flickering like a beast born from molten glass and shadow. It had no face—just a smooth, jagged surface where features should have been, illuminated by the shifting glow inside its chest. That sigil—Kairu's sigil—burned like a living brand, synchronized to the pulse in his palm.
Kairu felt his breath shorten.
Every instinct screamed run.
But Raviel's voice coiled around his mind like a steel tether.
[Stand your ground. This chamber does not test strength. It tests truth.]
"That thing doesn't look like it cares about truth," Kairu muttered, backing a step as the floor vibrated.
The figure moved.
Not fast—inevitable. Like an avalanche that could think.
Its hand—massive and jagged—swept downward. The pressure crushed the air before it even struck. Kairu rolled aside, boots scraping against the polished obsidian floor. The impact cratered the stone where he had been, cracking the surface with spiderweb fractures that glowed faintly red.
Kairu sprang to his feet, chest heaving.
"What is it?!"
[Your Echo of Origin.]
"My what?!"
Raviel's tone sharpened.
[Every Yorimashi who carries my thread must face the version of themselves they fear most. This chamber shapes that fear. It becomes form.]
The giant turned its head—though it had no eyes, Kairu felt it see him.
It attacked again.
Kairu raised his hand, releasing a burst of silver Ether. Threads of light whipped through the air like razor wires and slashed across the creature's arm—
But the strands sank into its body as if drowning in tar.
The giant absorbed the Ether and responded with overwhelming force—a shockwave that flung Kairu backward. His body slammed into a pillar of crystallized light, the impact knocking the breath from his lungs.
He gasped, sliding to the floor.
"Raviel—! I can't fight something that absorbs my Ether—"
[Then stop fighting like a frightened child.]
Kairu froze.
Raviel rarely sounded harsh. But now, the spirit's voice was sharp as broken crystal.
[This is not a battle of power. It is a battle of self. You are trying to strike me with energy, but it is your own fear wearing a body. Ether will not destroy what you have not accepted.]
Another tremor shook the chamber.
The giant began walking toward him again—slow, relentless, like it had all the time in the world to crush him.
Kairu's pulse thrashed inside his throat.
"Then what do I do?!"
[Why does its form terrify you?]
The question hit harder than any blow.
Kairu's back pressed against the cold pillar. He stared at the creature, watching the red glow pulsing inside its chest. It was powerful. Unstoppable. Ancient.
And its sigil matched his.
Kairu's voice came out as a whisper.
"…Because I don't understand what's in me. I don't know why I have this bond. I don't know why Raviel chose me. I don't know why spirits keep appearing around me, or why I keep hearing things no one else hears. I don't know anything. And I'm scared."
The moment the words left him, the giant stopped moving.
Raviel's voice softened.
[Good. Truth weakens fear.]
The giant tilted its head, as if listening.
Kairu rose slowly.
"Is that all you want? Honesty?"
The giant trembled.
Then its chest cracked open.
A blinding beam of red-white Ether shot outward—straight at Kairu.
He braced, raising his arms instinctively.
But instead of striking him—
—the beam slowed.
—shattered.
—then wrapped around him like a cocoon of liquid light.
Kairu's heart froze.
He wasn't being attacked.
He was being claimed.
Raviel's voice resonated through the chamber, deeper than before.
[Do you understand now? It is not fear of me. It is fear of what you might become.]
The light penetrated Kairu's skin—warm, heavy, overwhelming. His veins glowed like threads of molten silver, coursing with energy he didn't know he possessed. His knees buckled, but he forced himself to stay upright.
The giant's form wavered, flickering between solid and transparent. It stepped back, lowering its enormous arms.
Then—it changed shape.
It grew smaller.
Slender.
Human.
When the light finally dimmed, Kairu stared in shock.
Standing before him…
…was himself.
But older.
Stronger.
Sharper.
Eyes glowing faint red. A presence like a storm.
An echo of who he could become.
The older version spoke, its voice layered like two overlapping tones.
"You are not weak, Kairu Ryoku. You are unfinished."
Then the echo gently pressed its palm against Kairu's chest.
A rush of Ether flooded through him—powerful, but stable. No chaos. No pain.
A gift.
A warning.
A future.
The echo dissolved into streaks of light and seeped into the chamber walls.
Silence returned.
Kairu sank to his knees, clutching his chest, panting hard.
"Raviel… what… was that?"
Raviel answered quietly.
[Your first trial. And the first truth you needed to face.]
Kairu hugged his arms around himself.
"…And the next truth?"
The chamber rumble deepened.
From the darkness, dozens of new sigils lit up.
A doorway appeared on the far wall—one that hadn't existed before.
Raviel's voice grew low.
[The chamber has accepted you. But it has more to show. Rise, Kairu. There is still much you do not know.]
Kairu pushed himself up, still shaky.
But for the first time, the fear inside him was not choking.
Just waiting.
He stepped toward the new doorway.
