Chapter 21 - Chapter 20:The Promise to Help

The sun rose gently over Rabbit Island, its light spilling gold across the calm waves. The sea breeze carried the scent of salt and coconuts, and the birds' songs filled the morning air.Samreth stood near the hut he built, looking out toward the mainland. From this distance, Kampot's mountains looked peaceful, but he knew beyond them were villages still wounded by war, by hunger, by fear.

Sophea walked up behind him, her hair loose in the wind, holding a clay cup of coconut water."You're awake early again," she said softly.

"I couldn't sleep," he replied. "Every time I close my eyes, I see the people we left behind… the ones still running, hiding."

Sophea lowered her gaze. "We did what we could, Samreth. We survived."

He turned to her, his voice gentle but full of meaning. "But surviving isn't enough anymore."

Athisa joined them soon after, carrying a basket of seaweed and herbs she gathered. Koma trotted beside her, wagging his tail."You both look troubled," she said, placing the basket down. "Has the sea lost its peace?"

Samreth smiled faintly. "No. But I think it's time we stop running. We've been given a chance to live — maybe it's time we help others do the same."

Athisa nodded slowly. "I've been thinking the same. The war has broken many hearts… and not all can heal alone."

Sophea sat beside the fire pit, poking at the

ashes from last night's fire. "But what can we do? We're just three people on an island."

"Three is enough to begin," Samreth said firmly. "I still have tools, supplies, medicine from before. And I know how to build, to teach, to treat wounds."

Athisa smiled. "And I can speak with the animals. They can help us find food, warn us of danger. Even guide lost people to safety."

Sophea looked at them both — their eyes filled with quiet determination. Slowly, her worry turned into a small, proud smile."Then I'll help too," she said. "I'll cook, I'll tend to the sick. I'll welcome anyone who comes."

The three of them sat together, forming a circle around the small fire. Koma lay between them, resting his head on Samreth's foot.

"Then it's decided," Samreth said. "From now on, this place — this island — will not only be our home. It will be a place of healing. A new beginning."

Athisa lifted her hand, eyes shining like the sea. "Let's make a promise — to never turn away those who need help."

Sophea placed her hand over Athisa's. "To share what little we have."

And Samreth placed his hand over theirs. "To build a world better than the one we ran from."

The three of them smiled. The ocean breeze brushed past, as if blessing their vow.

That afternoon, they began preparing. Samreth repaired an old fishing hut near the shore to turn into a shelter. Sophea dried herbs and food. Athisa called to the birds, sending them across the sea with messages of safety.

By sunset, the first bird returned — carrying a piece of red cloth tied around its leg.

Athisa's eyes widened. "Someone saw the message," she whispered. "They're coming."

Samreth looked toward the horizon, where the fading light met the sea. He felt a spark of hope — one stronger than any fire he'd ever built.

"Then let's be ready," he said softly. "Our story isn't ending. It's just beginning again — this time, for others too."
