Chapter 492 - England Tour of India - 2 2017

Anil Kumble did not change his stance for the remainder of the One Day International series. Siddanth Deva remained in the reserves.

The Indian team traveled to Cuttack for the second ODI. The pitch was another batting paradise. India was reduced to 25 for 3 early in the innings. MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, the two senior veterans, executed a massive rescue operation. Yuvraj scored 150 runs. Dhoni scored 134 runs. India posted 381 runs on the board and won the match by 15 runs, securing the series victory.

The teams moved to Kolkata for the third and final ODI. England batted first and scored 321 runs. India chased hard, anchored by a 90-run innings from Kedar Jadhav and 55 from Virat Kohli, but fell short by 5 runs. India won the series 2-1.

Siddanth spent the matches carrying drinks, offering tactical advice to the bowlers during the breaks, and maintaining his physical conditioning in the stadium gyms. Kumble had successfully proven his point regarding match fitness and authority.

However, the power dynamic in Indian cricket was about to shift permanently.

After the final ODI in Kolkata, the team flew to Kanpur to prepare for the upcoming three-match T20 International series.

That evening, MS Dhoni requested a private meeting with the BCCI selection panel, headed by MSK Prasad, at the team hotel.

Dhoni walked into the conference room. He did not extend the meeting with unnecessary conversation. He delivered his decision directly.

He was stepping down as the captain of the Indian limited-overs teams. He had successfully transitioned the Test captaincy to Siddanth two years ago. Now, with the 2019 World Cup two years away, Dhoni calculated it was the exact right time to hand over the complete leadership structure, allowing the new captain to build their specific squad and tactical identity.

The selection panel accepted his resignation with immense respect.

An hour later, Siddanth Deva received a phone call in his hotel room. It was MSK Prasad.

"Siddanth," Prasad spoke clearly over the line. "MS has officially stepped down from the white-ball captaincy. We have just concluded the board meeting. We want to unify the leadership across all three formats. We are offering you the full-time captaincy for the ODI and T20 squads, effective immediately."

Siddanth absorbed the information. He had anticipated this transition. Leading the Test team required strategic endurance, but leading the white-ball teams required rapid tactical execution. He was ready for both.

"I accept the role," Siddanth confirmed.

The decision fundamentally altered his status within the current camp. Anil Kumble could leave a senior fast bowler on the bench to enforce discipline. Anil Kumble absolutely could not leave the newly appointed, full-time captain of the Indian national team on the bench. The coaching authority was superseded by the board's administrative mandate. Siddanth Deva had to play.

The following morning, the BCCI issued the official press release.

The internet reacted with intensity. It was the end of an era and the beginning of another.

Twitter Comments:

@CricketFanatic99: MS Dhoni steps down. End of an era. Thank you for the World Cups, Mahi bhai!

@BCCInsider: SIDDANTH DEVA IS THE ALL-FORMAT CAPTAIN! The Devil officially takes the throne across all three formats.

@MahiFanClub: I am crying. MS Dhoni gave us everything. But if anyone has to take over, I am glad it is Siddanth Deva. He respects Mahi.

@Kohli_Stats: Deva as the captain means he returns to the playing XI tomorrow! Kumble cannot bench the official captain of the team.

@CricCrazyJohn: A unified captaincy is a smart move by the BCCI. It gives Siddanth two years to build his team for the 2019 World Cup in England.

@SportsKeedaLive: BREAKING: Siddanth Deva appointed as India's new limited-overs captain. Dhoni available as a wicketkeeper-batsman.

@OrangeArmy: Congratulations Captain! Now please win the T20 series.

@HarshaBhogleVoice: MS Dhoni leaves a massive legacy. A quiet transition, exactly his style. Siddanth Deva takes over. Exciting times for Indian cricket.

Siddanth's phone buzzed continuously for two hours. He received text messages from Sameer, Arjun, Feroz, and dozens of former players congratulating him on the appointment. Krithika called him immediately from Shamshabad, expressing her happiness.

On January 26, 2017, the Indian team arrived at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur for the first T20 International.

The stadium was packed with thirty-three thousand fans. The noise level was deafening.

Siddanth Deva, wearing the blue Indian jersey, walked out to the center of the pitch. He walked alongside Eoin Morgan, the English captain.

Ravi Shastri stood near the pitch, holding a microphone and the coin.

The crowd saw Siddanth walking out for the toss. The roar that erupted from the stands was massive. It shook the pillars of the stadium.

"Welcome to Green Park, Kanpur," Ravi Shastri announced over the stadium speakers, his booming voice cutting through the noise. "Before we get to the toss, we have a new man leading the side in white-ball cricket. Siddanth, massive congratulations on taking over the captaincy across all formats."

The crowd cheered again, chanting his name loudly.

"Thank you, Ravi Bhai," Siddanth replied into the microphone. His voice was calm. "It is a massive responsibility. I want to thank the fans, my family, and my friends who have supported me throughout this journey. And a special thanks to MS Dhoni for setting the standard so high. He is still out here with us, and his experience is invaluable."

The crowd chanted Dhoni's name in response.

"Let's get to it," Shastri said. "Siddanth, you have the coin."

Siddanth flipped the coin into the air. Morgan called heads. It landed heads.

"England wins the toss," Shastri confirmed. "Eoin, what is the decision?"

"We will bowl first," Morgan stated. "The pitch looks a bit damp. We want to exploit the early conditions and restrict them to a chaseable total."

"Siddanth, you are batting first," Shastri turned to Deva. "What is your playing eleven for your first match as T20 captain?"

"We have a strong batting core," Siddanth listed the lineup clearly. "KL Rahul and Virat Kohli are opening the batting. I will bat at number three. Suresh Raina is back in the squad at four. Yuvraj Singh at five. MS Dhoni at six. Manish Pandey at seven. Hardik Pandya at eight. The bowling attack is Jasprit Bumrah, Ashish Nehra, and Yuzvendra Chahal."

"You are batting at three today?" Shastri asked, slightly surprised. Siddanth usually batted two down the order in T20s.

"Yes," Siddanth confirmed. "I am moving up to anchor the innings."

The captains shook hands and walked back to their dressing rooms.

Up in the commentary box, Harsha Bhogle, Sunil Gavaskar, and Nasser Hussain took their positions.

"A new era begins today," Harsha Bhogle stated. "Siddanth Deva takes over the T20 captaincy. He has immediately changed the tactical structure by promoting himself to number three. He wants to dictate the pace of the innings."

"It is a bold move," Nasser Hussain agreed. "England has a strong pace attack with Tymal Mills and Chris Jordan. They will test the Indian top order early."

The umpires walked out to the middle. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli walked out to open the batting for India.

Tymal Mills, the left-arm fast bowler, took the new ball for England.

Mills ran in. He utilized his natural pace and angle. He bowled a fast, short-of-a-length delivery outside the off stump. KL Rahul tried to cut the ball over point. The ball bounced higher than he anticipated. It took the top edge of the bat and flew directly into the air.

Adil Rashid settled underneath the ball at short third man and took the catch safely.

"Out!" Harsha Bhogle called it. "KL Rahul falls in the very first over! He tried to force the pace early and pays the price. England strikes immediately."

India was 4/1.

The crowd went silent for a moment. Then, the electronic scoreboard flashed.

Siddanth Deva walked down the pavilion steps.

The stadium erupted. The fans had waited three matches to see him. He walked to the crease, carrying his custom heavy bat. He marked his guard with the umpire.

Virat Kohli met him in the middle of the pitch.

"The ball is stopping slightly on the surface," Virat analyzed. "It is not coming onto the bat smoothly."

"We build the base," Siddanth instructed. "Do not take unnecessary risks against the new ball. Rotate the strike."

Chris Jordan bowled from the other end. Siddanth faced his first delivery in competitive cricket in over three months. Jordan bowled a full delivery on the middle stump line. Siddanth presented the full face of the bat and pushed it gently to mid-on for a quick single.

They played sensible, clinical cricket for the next six overs. They did not hit risky shots in the air. They found the gaps in the field, running hard between the wickets. Siddanth's elite physical conditioning allowed him to convert easy singles into tight twos, constantly putting pressure on the English fielders.

---

Moeen Ali came into the attack to bowl his off-spin.

Virat Kohli tried to accelerate the scoring rate. He stepped down the pitch to loft Moeen over long-on. The ball turned slightly away from him. He misjudged the flight. The ball hit the bottom of the bat and went straight to Eoin Morgan standing at mid-wicket.

"Caught!" Sunil Gavaskar announced. "Virat Kohli hits it straight to the captain! He looks disappointed. He was looking solid, but he falls for 29 off 26 deliveries."

India was 65/2 in the 10th over.

Siddanth was currently batting on 32 runs off 19 deliveries. He had hit four boundaries, playing purely technical cricket.

Suresh Raina walked out to the middle. Raina was a T20 specialist, known for his aggressive stroke play against spin.

"Sid," Raina said, tapping the pitch. "I will take on the spinners."

"Okay," Siddanth agreed. "I will anchor."

Raina attacked immediately. He hit Adil Rashid for a six over mid-wicket and swept Moeen Ali for two boundaries. He scored a quick 34 runs before being bowled by Liam Plunkett.

Yuvraj Singh followed. He hit one massive six before top-edging a short ball from Tymal Mills.

MS Dhoni walked out at number six. The stadium cheered loudly for the former captain.

It was the 16th over. India was 128/4.

Siddanth was batting on 58 runs from 36 deliveries. He had securely built the innings. He had ensured India did not suffer a middle-order collapse.

Now, with exactly four overs remaining, the tactical objective shifted entirely.

Siddanth walked down the pitch and tapped gloves with Dhoni.

"Base is secure," Siddanth stated. "We maximize the total. I am taking the strike."

"Go," Dhoni agreed.

Chris Jordan came on to bowl the 17th over. Jordan was widely regarded as one of the best death bowlers in the world, specializing in highly accurate yorkers.

Jordan ran in. He targeted Siddanth's toes, aiming for a perfectly executed yorker.

Siddanth did not wait for the ball to pitch. He utilized his bat speed. He stepped out of his crease, converting the yorker into a half-volley. He brought his heavy bat down with massive force. The ball launched off the middle of the bat, traveling completely flat over the long-off boundary for a six.

"What a shot!" Nasser Hussain exclaimed. "You cannot bowl a better yorker than that, but Siddanth Deva simply creates his own length. That is pure power."

Jordan adjusted his line. He bowled wide outside the off stump, attempting to keep the ball away from Siddanth's hitting arc.

Siddanth anticipated the wide line. He shuffled across his stumps, reached out, and sliced the ball over backward point for a boundary.

Jordan panicked slightly. He bowled a slower ball, attempting to deceive the batsman. Siddanth read the lack of pace from the bowler's hand. He waited for the ball to arrive, transferred his weight perfectly, and smashed it over deep mid-wicket for another six.

He took 18 runs off the 17th over.

Tymal Mills bowled the 18th over. He relied on extreme pace and sharp bouncers.

Mills bowled a 145 km/h bouncer directed straight at Siddanth's helmet. Siddanth did not duck. He locked his eyes on the ball, pivoted on his back foot, and executed a flawless pull shot. The ball rocketed off the bat, clearing the square leg boundary by thirty meters.

"He is dealing in sixes!" Harsha Bhogle shouted. "This is a calculated assault. He was anchoring the innings just three overs ago, and now he is destroying the English pace attack."

Mills bowled full. Siddanth drove him straight down the ground for four. Mills bowled wide. Siddanth cut him past point for another four.

He took 16 runs off the 18th over.

Ben Stokes came on to bowl the 19th over. Stokes tried to bowl full and wide.

Siddanth hit him for two boundaries through the off-side. Dhoni took the strike for the final three balls of the over and hit a massive six over long-on, contributing to the momentum.

They took 17 runs off the 19th over.

The score was 179/4.

Siddanth was batting on 94 runs from 44 deliveries.

Chris Jordan was handed the ball for the final over of the innings.

Siddanth took the strike. The crowd was on their feet, anticipating the century.

Jordan ran in. He bowled a perfect yorker on the middle stump. Siddanth dug it out directly back to the bowler. No run.

Second ball. Jordan bowled a slower ball short of a length. Siddanth pulled it hard into the deep mid-wicket region. The fielders converged. Siddanth and Dhoni ran two runs rapidly.

He was on 96.

Third ball. Jordan missed his length slightly, bowling a low full toss on the leg stump. Siddanth whipped his wrists, sending the ball racing past short fine leg for a boundary.

He reached 100 runs off 47 deliveries.

The Kanpur stadium exploded. Siddanth raised his bat to the dressing room. He looked at Virat Kohli, who was standing on the balcony clapping vigorously. Anil Kumble stood in the background, clapping neutrally.

"A spectacular century from the captain!" Gavaskar praised on commentary. "He returns to the squad after three months, promotes himself to number three, anchors the innings during the middle overs, and explodes at the death. That is a masterclass in T20 batting."

There were three balls remaining in the innings. Siddanth was not finished.

Fourth ball. Jordan bowled wide. Siddanth stepped across and scooped the ball over the short fine-leg fielder for another boundary.

Fifth ball. Jordan bowled a wide yorker. Siddanth squeezed it out to deep point. They ran two runs.

The final ball of the innings.

Jordan ran in, desperate to finish the over well. He bowled a back-of-the-length delivery, trying to rush Siddanth with pace.

Siddanth anticipated the length perfectly. He cleared his front leg, opened the face of the bat, and flat-batted the ball with absolute, brutal power straight back over the bowler's head. The ball crashed into the sight screen on a single bounce. Four runs.

He took 16 runs off the final over.

The Indian innings concluded at a massive 195/4.

Siddanth Deva walked off the field undefeated on 110 runs from 50 deliveries.

The innings break lasted fifteen minutes.

England required 196 runs to win. It was a daunting target on a pitch that was starting to grip and slow down.

Siddanth led the Indian team out to the field.

Siddanth took the new ball himself.

Jason Roy and Sam Billings walked out to open the batting for England.

Siddanth marked his run-up. He set his field. He placed a slip, a deep third man, and a deep square leg.

He started his run-up. He hit the crease. He released the ball.

The ball clocked 153 km/h on the speed gun. It pitched on a good length on the middle stump and seamed away sharply. Jason Roy pushed at it tentatively. The ball beat the outside edge by two inches.

"Pace," Nasser Hussain summarized simply in the commentary box. "Raw, unadulterated pace. Jason Roy had no idea where that ball went."

Second ball. Siddanth bowled a sharp, rising bouncer directed straight at Roy's chest. Roy tried to hook the ball, but the pace defeated his reaction time. The ball hit high on the bat and lobbed gently in the air.

Suresh Raina, standing at short mid-wicket, took a simple catch.

Jason Roy was out for a duck.

England was 0/1.

Joe Root walked out at number three. Siddanth greeted him with a 154 km/h yorker that Root barely managed to dig out. Siddanth finished his first over giving away exactly zero runs. A maiden over and a wicket.

Ashish Nehra bowled the second over tightly, conceding only five runs.

Siddanth returned for his second over. He targeted Sam Billings. Billings tried to step down the track to negate the swing. Siddanth saw him move. He shortened his length and bowled a heavy, fast delivery aimed at the body. Billings fended the ball awkwardly. It took the gloves and carried safely to MS Dhoni behind the stumps.

England was 8/2.

Eoin Morgan, the English captain, walked out to the crease. He joined Joe Root.

Siddanth completed his two-over spell having taken two wickets for just two runs. He took himself out of the attack, rotating his bowlers.

Yuzvendra Chahal, the leg-spinner, came into the attack after the powerplay. The pitch offered significant turn. Chahal bowled brilliantly, utilizing his variations to confuse the English batsmen. He dismissed Morgan and Ben Stokes in quick succession.

Jasprit Bumrah bowled precisely in the middle overs, utilizing his slower balls to restrict the scoring rate. He dismissed Moeen Ali.

By the 15th over, England was struggling heavily at 110/5. The required run rate had skyrocketed over fourteen runs an over.

Joe Root was the only batsman offering resistance, battling his way to 46 runs.

Siddanth brought himself back into the attack for the 16th over to finish the game.

He bowled from around the wicket to Joe Root. He slanted the ball across the right-handed batsman at 150 km/h. Root tried to run the ball down to third man to rotate the strike.

The ball took the inside edge of the bat and crashed heavily into the off stump, uprooting it entirely from the ground.

Root was out.

Siddanth had effectively ended the run chase.

England's lower order completely collapsed against the precise death bowling of Jasprit Bumrah and Ashish Nehra. The final wickets fell rapidly.

England managed to score only 145/8 in their twenty overs.

India won the match by 50 runs.

The players shook hands on the field. Siddanth led the team back toward the pavilion. The crowd roared in appreciation, celebrating the massive victory.

The post-match presentation was set up on the boundary line. Ravi Shastri stood with a microphone.

"The Man of the Match, and the winning captain, Siddanth Deva," Shastri announced as Siddanth walked up to the podium.

Siddanth accepted the trophy.

"Siddanth, an incredible return to international cricket," Shastri started the interview. "A flawless century, three critical wickets, and a comprehensive victory. You did not look like a man who has been away from the game for three months."

"The physical conditioning does not stop during a break, Ravi Bhai," Siddanth replied into the microphone, his voice calm and professional. "I maintained my training load. The ball came onto the bat nicely in the first innings, and the bowlers executed the plans perfectly in the second."

"Your bowling spell was lethal. Three wickets for very few runs," Shastri noted.

"The new ball was swinging," Siddanth said. "I utilized the conditions. Jasprit and Chahal did the heavy lifting in the middle overs. It was a complete team performance."

"Congratulations again on the victory and the captaincy," Shastri concluded the interview.

Siddanth shook his hand and walked back to join his team. He had successfully taken over the white-ball captaincy, executed a flawless individual performance, and secured a massive victory. The dynamic in the dressing room had fundamentally shifted. The coach's authority remained, but the captain had established command on the field.
