A demon loomed over him, its shadow swallowing the dim blue light of the cavern. Up close, it was worse its breath reeked of rot and something metallic, its jagged teeth slick with old blood. Its claws rose slowly, almost deliberately, as if savoring the moment before the kill.
Rex's body screamed at him to move. For a split second, fear locked his limbs but then something deeper kicked in. The memory of cold act of his wife. The feeling of being hunted. His eyes sharpened.
At the last possible moment, he twisted his body sideways. The claws came down with brutal force, slamming into the stone where his chest had been just a heartbeat ago.
Sparks burst outward, fragments of rock scattering across the ground. Rex didn't hesitate.
Still half on the ground, he grabbed the demon's arm and pulled himself forward instead of away. The movement caught the creature off guard. His fingers tightened around the broken blade still clutched in his hand, and with a raw, desperate motion, he drove it upward.
The blade sank deep into the demon's jaw, piercing through into its skull. The creature convulsed violently. Its claws lashed out blindly, grazing Rex's shoulder, tearing fabric and skin.
Pain flared in but he held on, teeth clenched, pushing the blade deeper until the resistance gave way with a sickening crack. Then the demon went still. Its weight collapsed forward, nearly crushing him beneath it.
For a moment, Rex just lay there, breathing hard, staring up at the cavern ceiling as his heart hammered violently in his chest. His entire body trembled not from weakness, but from the adrenaline still flooding his system.
Then the familiar glow returned.

The energy surge this time was unmistakable. It spread through his limbs like fire, burning away fatigue, reinforcing muscle, sharpening his senses. The pain in his ribs dulled just slightly but not gone, but manageable.
Rex pushed the corpse off himself and slowly stood up.
Across the chamber, the fight was already ending. One of the hunters wiped blood from his blade while another kicked a fallen demon aside with a grunt. Kaito stood near the center, calm as ever, scanning the area to confirm there were no more threats.
When his gaze landed on Rex, it lingered.
"You're still standing," Kaito said, his tone carrying a hint of surprise.
Rex exhaled, rolling his shoulder slightly despite the sting. "Yeah… didn't feel like dying again today."
"Hmm. He's strong for a newbie. I thought he was an E rank Hunter." Kaito thought to himself.
A few of the hunters chuckled, but there was a subtle shift in how they looked at him now. The earlier dismissal was gone replaced with something closer to cautious respect.
Kaito gave a short nod. "Good. Stay like that. Careless rookies don't last long in places like this."
Rex didn't respond. His attention had already drifted back to the faint glow only he could see.
Levelling up… again. It wasn't luck. This was growth and it was happening fast.
They pressed deeper into the dungeon, the air growing heavier with each step. The walls narrowed into jagged corridors that twisted unpredictably, forcing the group to move slower, more cautiously. The faint blue glow of the crystals dimmed, replaced by deeper shadows that seemed to shift when stared at too long.
The System flickered faintly, almost as if reacting to the environment.

"…Of course it is," Rex muttered under his breath.
Up ahead, the passage opened into a larger chamber. The ground dipped slightly, forming a shallow basin filled with cracked stone and scattered bones. Old bones.
Kaito raised a hand, signaling the team to stop.
"This is where it gets messy," he said quietly. "Stay tight."
The moment stretched. Then there was a movement. From the far side of the chamber, figures began to rise.
More demons than before, their red eyes igniting one by one in the dimness like embers catching fire. Their growls overlapped, low and hungry, echoing through the chamber in a chorus that sent a chill down Rex's spine. His grip tightened instinctively.
"Positions!" Kaito barked sharply, already stepping forward. His blade flashed as he took the lead without hesitation. "Don't let them surround you!"
The clash came instantly. Sound exploded in the confined space, roars, shouts, the sharp ring of weapons striking bone.
Rex moved with the group, but his focus narrowed, locking onto the nearest demon charging straight at him. Its speed was faster than the earlier ones, its movements more aggressive, more precise.
The claws grazed his side, tearing through fabric and drawing blood. Pain flared inbut he didn't stop. Instead, he stepped in closer.
The demon hesitated for a fraction of a second. That was all Rex needed. He drove his shoulder into its torso, unbalancing it, then followed through with a brutal upward strike of the broken blade. The weapon pierced under its rib, not clean but deep enough.
The creature shrieked, thrashing wildly. Rex held on as he twisted the blade multiple times until the resistance faded.

The notification pulsed brighter this time. And so did something else. For a brief moment, as the energy surged through him, Rex felt it..
A faint, cold presence but it was gone just as quickly as it came. He staggered back slightly, breath uneven.
"…What was that?"
But there was no time to think.
Another demon lunged.
And Rex stepped forward to meet it.
