"I have things to take care of," she said, her eyes darting nervously toward the front door before looking anywhere but at my face. "At home. Your father will be back soon."
It was the familiar, easy retreat she always used whenever a conversation became too difficult or too real. She simply chose to be conveniently elsewhere.
"Of course," I said, keeping my hands stuffed deep into the pockets of Cassian's sweatshirt.
"Safe journey back, Mom." I paused, swallowing the lingering lump in my throat.
"Thank you. For coming all this way. And thank you for the food, even though I know I'm not really your…" I bit the inside of my cheek, stopping the bitter words before they could ruin the rest of the morning.
"I appreciate it. Truly."
She moved her hand to the doorknob, turning the brass handle, but then she stopped.
