Chapter 115 - Volume 2, Chapter 63: A Victory Neither Names

The noise inside Heaven's Arena did not diminish when the emergency medical teams entered the ring. It only changed shape, the first stunned silence breaking into arguments, cheers and confused shouting that rolled through the stands in uneven waves. Above the ruined floor, the commentators replayed the final exchange from every available angle, searching for a reason Chrollo Lucilfer's last step had carried him over the boundary.

"An unbelievable finish to the first semifinal!" the lead commentator shouted over the crowd. "After controlling almost every part of the final sequence, Chrollo appears to have overextended during his last attack. Whether it was exhaustion, the blast behind him or simply one mistake after a brutal match, Kagetsu Yuzuki advances by ring-out!"

The replay showed the same five seconds again and again. Yuzuki's Infinity expired. Chrollo entered his guard with a knife. Yuzuki smiled. The blade changed direction, a palm struck his chest and Chrollo's foot crossed the line.

To the reporters watching from the press gallery, the answer seemed obvious enough. Even a fighter as controlled as Chrollo could make one mistake after sustaining several stolen abilities, taking repeated hits and fighting inside a collapsing arena. Some blamed the wet floor. Others argued that Yuzuki's final movement had subtly disturbed Chrollo's footing.

None of them saw the decision hidden between the knife and the palm.

Yuzuki barely made it into the concourse before reporters slipped around the first line of security. Microphones and cameras crowded into the corridor ahead of the medical team, while questions collided over one another.

"Yuzuki, did you force the ring-out?"

"Did you know Lucilfer would overstep?"

"Was the final explosion meant to break his balance?"

Yuzuki stopped because the crowd had blocked the corridor, not because he wanted to answer. His left arm hung against his side, broken and nearly useless after the recoil from Red. Blood soaked the shoulder where one of Chrollo's puppets had torn through the muscle, while the knife wound beneath his right ribs continued leaking through the temporary pressure dressing. His cracked ribs clicked faintly whenever he breathed too deeply, and the damaged muscles around his lower spine sent numbness into one leg whenever he shifted his weight incorrectly.

The worst pain remained behind his eyes. Without the blindfold, every camera flash struck like a needle driven through his skull. The Six Eyes caught everything at once. The electricity running through the lights, residual aura clinging to the reporters who had attended previous matches and particles of dust still drifting from the ruined arena.

A reporter pushed closer. "Was Chrollo's final step a mistake?"

Yuzuki looked toward the flashing cameras, his bloodshot blue eyes struggling to focus.

"He forced me beyond every limit I had," he said. His voice was quieter than the crowd, but the reporters nearest him stopped talking. "I survived. That's the result."

"But did you outmanoeuvre him in the final exchange?"

Yuzuki's expression remained flat. "I said what happened."

The reporter opened his mouth again.

A small fist struck the concrete wall beside his head.

The impact sent cracks racing across the surface and silenced the entire corridor.

Bisky stood between Yuzuki and the press with one hand still buried in the broken wall. Her childish appearance did little to soften the aura rolling from her body.

"He has broken ribs, a stab wound, a damaged shoulder and an arm that shouldn't be hanging at that angle," she said. Her voice was calm enough to be more frightening than a shout. "Anyone who puts another camera in his face can explain the interview from inside the wall."

Several reporters stepped back at once.

Bisky turned, caught Yuzuki by the uninjured side of his shirt and pulled him toward the medical elevator. "Move."

"I was moving."

Yuzuki's left knee weakened halfway through the answer. Bisky's hand immediately shifted to his lower back, supporting enough of his weight to keep him upright without making the gesture obvious.

"You're not allowed to collapse until we reach the doctors," she muttered.

"That feels unfair."

"You can complain after they put your bones back where they belong."

In a private viewing room overlooking the arena, Kastro stood in front of a wall monitor displaying the final moment. He had replayed it enough times that the movement no longer appeared accidental from any angle. Chrollo's balance had settled before his foot crossed the line. His body had not been carried forward by Yuzuki's defence or the explosion.

He had stepped out.

Netero sat on the edge of a bench nearby, turning an unused betting slip between his fingers.

"He had him," Kastro said. "The blade was already inside Yuzuki's guard."

"Mm."

"Then he changed the strike and walked over the line."

"That is what the recording shows."

Kastro looked at the Chairman. "Why?"

Netero smiled faintly. "If you need me to explain it, you weren't watching the same part."

"I watched all of it."

"You watched the knife."

Netero pointed toward the frozen image of Yuzuki standing exposed after spending Infinity on the marked barriers. His face was pale from blood loss, yet the faint smile remained there as Chrollo entered killing range.

"Watch the boy."

Kastro stared at the image. "He knew he had lost."

"Yes."

"And Chrollo stopped because he accepted it?"

Netero scratched his chin. "Not quite. People rarely stop because their opponent accepts death. Usually that makes the job easier."

He rose from the bench and slipped the betting paper into his sleeve.

"Chrollo saw something he didn't want to destroy. That doesn't make him kind, and it doesn't make Yuzuki safe from him. It only means the Spider's head found one thing his hand refused to crush today."

Kastro looked toward the screen again. "Could Yuzuki rely on that if they fought another time?"

Netero laughed.

"He'd be dead before he finished testing the idea."

The rear service corridor near the private medical wards was empty except for the faint buzz of old lights and water moving through exposed pipes. Yuzuki leaned against the wall while Shizuku stood in front of him with a fresh strip of black cloth.

"Close your eyes," she said.

"They're already closed."

"I can't tell."

Yuzuki lowered his head enough for her to reach him comfortably. Shizuku wrapped the cloth around his eyes, adjusted it twice and tied the knot behind his head. The pressure of the Six Eyes faded almost immediately, reducing the corridor from an unbearable storm of detail to something his injured brain could endure.

Shizuku stepped back to examine her work. "Better."

"My eyes still hurt."

"They also look less horrible."

"Thank you."

"You're welcome."

Chrollo stood farther down the corridor beneath one of the flickering lights. His jacket was gone, leaving him in a dark shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. The abrasions along his wrists and the cut on his cheek were minor compared to Yuzuki's injuries, though the fatigue in his posture was clearer now that he was no longer performing for the arena.

Pakunoda waited near the entrance to the passage, far enough away to give them privacy while remaining close enough to stop anyone else from entering.

Yuzuki pushed away from the wall. Pain tightened around his ribs, but he remained standing.

"Why?" he asked.

Chrollo looked at him without answering.

"You had me," Yuzuki continued. "My barrier was gone. I couldn't move properly, and the knife was already there. You didn't slip."

"No."

The direct admission made Yuzuki's jaw tighten. "Then why did you stop?"

Chrollo lowered his gaze briefly to his right hand, the same one that had held the knife.

"The match no longer interested me."

"That's a bad lie."

"It isn't entirely a lie."

Yuzuki took one careful step forward. "You built the whole fight around finding out what I'd do. You got your answer, reached my heart and then walked away."

"Yes."

"And now you're pretending the answer meant nothing."

Chrollo remained silent for several seconds. Shizuku stood beside Yuzuki without interfering, while Pakunoda watched Chrollo from the end of the corridor.

At last, Chrollo said, "Some people are more valuable alive than possessed."

Yuzuki's expression hardened beneath the blindfold. "I'm not something you own."

"I know."

"Do you?"

"If I believed you could be owned, I would still be trying."

The answer was calm and disturbingly honest.

Yuzuki rested his right hand against the wall when a tremor passed through his legs. "You stopped because I reminded you of her."

Chrollo's face did not change, but the silence that followed was enough.

"I'm not Sarasa," Yuzuki said. "And keeping me alive won't change what happened to her."

"I know."

"It won't erase what you've done either."

"No."

"If we meet outside a tournament and you put innocent people in front of me again, I won't thank you for today."

"I wouldn't expect you to."

Yuzuki tilted his head slightly. "I might kill you."

Chrollo studied him for a moment. "You had that opportunity today."

"I chose not to take it."

"So did I."

Neither spoke after that.

There was no gratitude between them and no forgiveness. Chrollo remained the leader of the Phantom Troupe, responsible for deaths Yuzuki could not excuse. Yuzuki remained the child who had rejected every invitation to join the Spider and would continue standing against the parts of Chrollo's world he considered unforgivable.

Yet the match had changed something.

Chrollo no longer looked at Yuzuki as a rare ability to collect or a stubborn child whose resistance might eventually be broken. Yuzuki, in turn, could no longer pretend Chrollo was only an empty monster wearing a human face. The humanity inside him was narrow, buried and dangerous, but it existed.

Chrollo looked toward Shizuku. "We should go."

Shizuku nodded, then turned back to Yuzuki. "You're fighting again tomorrow."

"I noticed."

"You should sleep."

"Bisky has probably arranged restraints."

"She asked me where Blinky was."

Yuzuki paused. "I'm definitely sleeping."

Shizuku gave his sleeve a small tug before stepping away. "Good."

She joined Chrollo, and the two walked toward Pakunoda. The tall woman fell into step beside them without asking what had been said.

Chrollo stopped once near the end of the corridor.

He did not turn around.

"Yuzuki."

"What?"

"Do not mistake today for a promise."

Yuzuki leaned back against the wall. "I wasn't going to."

Chrollo continued walking, and the three Spiders disappeared beyond the service door.

Hisoka watched the final exchange alone in a dark private suite elsewhere in the tower.

The recording played without commentary.

Yuzuki's barrier vanished. Chrollo entered with the knife. Yuzuki smiled. Chrollo changed the strike and stepped beyond the line.

Then the recording returned to the beginning.

Hisoka leaned forward with one elbow resting on his knee and a playing card turning slowly between his fingers. He had watched Chrollo fight many times. He knew the difference between hesitation, error and choice.

This had been a choice.

Chrollo had reached the ending he wanted and rejected it after looking into Yuzuki's face.

The card stopped turning.

Hisoka had spent years placing himself close to Chrollo, waiting for the opportunity to force the Spider's leader into a fight where nothing else mattered. Yet Yuzuki had received something stranger than victory. He had pushed Chrollo beyond tactics, reached whatever remained hidden beneath the calm and forced him to make an unscripted decision.

Hisoka disliked being excluded from anything that interesting.

The card bent between his fingers.

Crack.

It split neatly down the centre.

Hisoka looked at the frozen image of Yuzuki's exhausted smile, then at Chrollo's hand turning the knife aside. His irritation slowly changed into amusement.

"So that's what it takes," he murmured.

The next match waited for him.

Lucien Cain stood between Hisoka and the final, with an ability capable of pressing the air from a man's lungs and slowing movement across the entire arena. Under other circumstances, Hisoka might have enjoyed taking his time discovering the shape of it.

Now Lucien was merely an obstacle delaying the fight he wanted.

Hisoka rose from the sofa and tossed the broken halves of the card onto the table. His smile returned, light and playful enough to hide the malice behind it.

"Try not to fall apart before I get there, Yuzuki."

The screen replayed Chrollo's final step once more as Hisoka left the room.

In the medical ward several floors away, Yuzuki lay beneath surgical lights while Bisky argued with three physicians about whether he would be permitted to enter the final.

Battle Olympia had given him a victory.

No one who understood it was willing to call it his.
