Chapter 46 - The Fourth Consciousness

The sanctuary was silent. No birds sang. Even the breeze seemed to hold its breath.

The completed spiritual array covered nearly the entire stone courtyard, every rune glowing faintly with a soft golden light. Concentric circles surrounded the Spiritual Spring, each connected by delicate lines that shimmered like veins of liquid sunlight.

Herkid slowly walked around the perimeter one last time. After days of grueling practice, they knew Mara's endurance had its limits: her strength, which initially burned out in five minutes, now lasted fifteen before complete depletion. They had precisely that window to finish the ritual.

"No mistakes..." he whispered to himself. He stopped, inspecting a crucial nexus point where the golden lines converged. "I think..." He looked again, tracing the groove with his eyes. "...No, I'm certain."

Your confidence has improved, Faral's calm voice echoed inside Zhu's mind.

It has, Herkid replied mentally, smiling faintly. "I finally understand how the array works. It doesn't force spiritual energy."

"It guides it," Faral supplied. "Exactly. You have learned well."

A faint blush spread across Herkid's cheeks. Receiving praise from an ancient entity as knowledgeable as Faral felt surprisingly rewarding.

Mara stepped into her position at the eastern point of the array, her breathing measured. She inhaled deeply and released whips of translucent, silver healing mana, weaving them directly into the glowing rune formation.

Zhu took her place at the center, sitting cross-legged. Unlike their first chaotic attempt, she wasn't afraid. She trusted them. Faral had guided them through the perils of Hollowveil. Herkid had painstakingly mastered the runes. Mara possessed the pure spiritual mana necessary to bridge consciousness. Everyone had fulfilled their role.

Now… it was her turn.

Remember, Faral's voice remained a serene anchor. Once the pathway opens, do not resist.

I won't, Zhu answered, her cheeks puffing out slightly. Why was this stinky fart still giving her basic instructions?

No matter what you see... remain calm.

Zhu rolled her eyes within her mindscape. You're saying that to the wrong person. I'm always cool as a cucumber.

Faral lied without a single fluctuation in his tone. Yes. Always so calm.

"Alright," Herkid called out, his voice grounding them. "Let's begin."

Mara closed her eyes. Physical contact wasn't necessary; the circle bound them. Gentle silver mana flowed from her body like moonlight spilling across a still lake. The moment it brushed the array, the runes awakened. Golden light raced through every line Herkid had drawn—one circle, then another, then another, until the entire sanctuary glowed beneath their feet.

Herkid watched every connection carefully, his forehead slick with sweat. "Stable..." he whispered. "The flow is stable."

The array hummed softly—not a harsh vibration, but a rhythm almost like breathing.

When the silver mana reached Zhu, she closed her eyes and embraced the familiar sensation of weightlessness. Her physical body remained seated in the stone courtyard, yet her consciousness broke free, drifting upward into the ether.

The world around her slowly dissolved. The sound of flowing water disappeared. The warmth of the sun vanished into a boundless white haze. Then, like stepping through a heavy silk curtain, the endless expanse of her mindscape welcomed her once again.

"I made it," she murmured, her feet touching the familiar grass plane as a gentle breeze rippled across the field.

Faral's blue-white spiritual form emerged beside her. Unlike before, his silhouette appeared far more solid and defined. "The pathway is functioning," he noted, surveying the familiar sky. "Excellent."

Zhu turned toward a secondary rune section where silver light condensed nearby—the designated space where they intended to bind the lotus so Faral could claim its body.

Another ripple spread across the ground. Mara appeared moments later, blinking in quiet wonder as her spiritual projection took form. This was a new breakthrough born from their days of joint training; by linking their mana, Mara could now step directly into Zhu's mental plane.

"It worked..." Mara whispered, raising her translucent hands to the sky. "I've never left my body before."

"Few Spiritual Mana Users ever do," Faral answered, a rare note of respect in his voice. "You should be proud."

Mara smiled shyly, but Faral's expression quickly hardened. "The difficult part begins now."

Zhu swallowed hard. "...Ready?"

"As I shall ever be." Faral turned toward the glowing secondary rune. "Herkid," his voice echoed through the spiritual pathway bridging the worlds. "Can you hear me?"

A distant, slightly muffled reply echoed back: "Yes. The array is stable."

Faral nodded. "Begin the second sequence."

Outside, Herkid knelt beside the fountain's edge, his fingers trembling slightly. The second sequence—the one designed to isolate and sever spiritual consciousness. With practiced precision, he slowly rotated three of the smaller rune plates exactly as the ancient text instructed.

One. Two. Three.

The golden light shifted instantly. Instead of circulating inward, it inverted, surging directly into the depths of the Spiritual Spring.

Inside Zhu's mind, everyone felt the shift—a violent, foreign presence thrashing against the threshold of the mindscape.

"It has begun," Faral warned grimly.

Zhu and Mara watched as the translucent blueprint of the lotus inside the rune field began to warp.

Back in the physical sanctuary, the Spiritual Spring erupted in a blinding flash of violet light. The lotus floating upon its surface thrashing violently, its thick, thorny vines exploding out of the water.

Herkid gasped, shielding his eyes. "It's resisting!"

The lotus wasn't shaking from wind or current, but from an enraged consciousness within. Mara's physical body remained motionless in her eastern circle, but silver mana poured from her pores in a torrential stream to reinforce the boundary.

Inside the mindscape, the wind whipped into a gale. The trapped lotus spirit slammed against the invisible barriers of the rune array, sending hairline cracks of violet light spider-webbing across the boundary before snapping shut again. The atmospheric pressure spiked sharply. Zhu grimaced, clutching her temple as a sharp, piercing pain bloomed behind her eyes from the impact.

"Are you okay?" Mara asked, taking a quick step toward her.

"I can feel it," Zhu gritted out, setting her jaw, "but I can manage!"

Seeing her holding her head, Faral's light orb surged toward the thrashing entity. Blue and purple energy collided violently within the containment array.

Outside, the physical world quaked. Silver mana, golden runes, and violet spiritual energy warred around the fountain. The lotus lifted into the air, but its roots anchored deep within the earth, snaking under the stone tiles and cracking the courtyard floor. The ground shook violently under Herkid's feet. Drawing his blade, Herkid threw himself into battle against the thrashing vines, severing those that threatened to break the drawn runes. While trying to keep a shield around Zhu and Mara's body.

"Please hurry, you guys!" Herkid's muffled voice strained through the connection. "It's trying to destroy the foundation!"

Within Zhu's mind, Faral's blue light wrapped like a vise around the violet lotus spirit. A dense violet mist bled into existence, gathering, twisting, and taking shape. It expanded exponentially, its immense spiritual pressure causing the sky overhead to ripple like disturbed water.

"Ahh"

Zhu held her head and trembled, the pain in her head became a dull ach she fell to her knees.

Mara rushed to support her "Zhu!" she screamed.

Zhu had to concentrate on keeping her consciousness stable the pressure from the two combatant was making her mind hurt.

The enormous lotus, now formed entirely of concentrated violet light, shivered within the array, each petal shimmering with ancient power.

At its center, a single golden eye opened.

Slowly. Silently.

Its gaze swept over Faral, then Zhu, and finally Mara. The golden eye narrowed into a lethal slit.

A voice unlike anything they had ever heard echoed across the mindscape—not spoken aloud, nor thought, but felt in the very marrow of their souls:

...Mine.
