Chapter 21: Platform Nine and Three-Quarters

September first arrived with London's crisp morning air and the familiar chaos of King's Cross Station. Adam Wright stood before the barrier between platforms nine and ten, his trunk-laden cart trembling beneath white-knuckled hands. Two years had passed since an eleven-year-old orphan had crashed face-first into this same brick wall, blood streaming from his broken nose while security guards dragged him away from the magic he couldn't reach.

"Blood on the stone. Security's rough hands. The crushing knowledge that I didn't belong."

The memory tasted like copper pennies and defeat, but the boy who had been rejected no longer existed. In his place stood a fourteen-year-old wizard with forged credentials, stolen power, and the absolute determination to pass through the barrier that had once destroyed his faith.

Families moved around him with practiced ease—parents hugging children goodbye, older students reuniting with school friends, the casual magic of people who belonged in this world without question. Adam pushed his cart forward, one wheel squeaking slightly, his heart hammering against his ribs with each step.

One step. The bricks loomed ahead, solid and unforgiving.

Two steps. His reflection stared back from grimy windows—no longer the half-starved street child, but someone who looked like he deserved to be here.

Three steps. The barrier rushed toward him, and—

He passed through effortlessly.

The sensation was like stepping through water made of starlight. Reality rippled around him, the Muggle station falling away to reveal Platform Nine and Three-Quarters in all its impossible glory. The Hogwarts Express gleamed scarlet and magnificent before him, steam billowing from its chimney while students and parents crowded the platform in a festival of controlled chaos.

Adam stood frozen beside his cart, unable to move, as two years of struggle crystallized into this single moment of triumph. He had made it. After the rejection, the homelessness, the desperate climb from nothing to something—he was here. Where he belonged. Where he'd always belonged.

A tear slid down his cheek before he could stop it.

"Overwhelming, isn't it, lad?" An elderly wizard with kind eyes mistook his emotion for first-time nerves. "You'll love Hogwarts. Best years of your life, mark my words."

Adam nodded, not trusting his voice. The old man moved on, leaving him alone with his vindication and the weight of everything that had led to this moment.

"Mrs. Brennan dragging me back to the orphanage. Old Tom teaching me to survive. Mrs. Chen's dumplings. Bastard the pigeon. All of it led here."

Adam boarded the train early, seeking an empty compartment where he could observe without being observed. His strategy was simple: remain invisible. He was a transfer student, older than most third-years, with no established friend group or social connections. He needed to study the social dynamics, learn the unspoken rules, avoid drawing attention until after the Sorting determined his fate.

When younger students tried to enter his compartment, Adam employed subtle Confundo charms that made them suddenly remember seeing empty seats elsewhere. Not malicious—merely protective. He needed this space to think, to plan, to prepare for the performance that would define his next seven years.

Through the window, he watched the platform's theater unfold. Harry Potter hugged Mrs. Weasley goodbye before boarding with Ron and Hermione, their easy friendship visible in shared laughter and casual touches. Ginny Weasley followed, looking healthier than she had the previous year—the Chamber of Secrets ordeal behind her, color returned to her cheeks.

The Malfoy family made their usual scene near the train's front. Lucius's cold farewell to Draco carried the weight of unspoken expectations, while Narcissa's elegant concern masked steel beneath silk. Adam cataloged it all—future classmates, potential enemies, possible allies. In Slytherin house, every relationship was strategy.

"Knowledge is survival. These people will determine whether I live or die for the next year."

As the train departed London, Adam watched his city disappear through the window—the streets where he'd learned magic, fought pigeons, and built an identity from lies and determination. Knockturn Alley's shadowed corners. Diagon Alley's bustling commerce. The park where Mrs. Chen had fed him dumplings and Old Tom had taught him that survival was an art form.

It was only for a school year. He'd return during holidays. But it felt like closing a page of his life that had defined everything he'd become.

The countryside rolled past in shades of green and gold, peaceful in a way that London never was. Other compartments buzzed with excited chatter—friends reuniting, first-years babbling with nervous energy, older students discussing summer adventures. When the trolley witch appeared, Adam bought Chocolate Frogs with the strange thrill of doing something perfectly normal.

"Just another student buying sweets. If only they knew."

He practiced his cover story one final time, refining details that might save his life: homeschooled by a deceased guardian, seeking formal education, no suspicious background to investigate. Simple, sympathetic, impossible to verify through normal channels.

As twilight approached and the train began its final approach to Hogwarts, Adam steeled himself for what lay ahead. Soon would come the boats across the lake, the castle entrance, the Sorting Hat's judgment. Soon he'd be surrounded by people who could never know what he really was.

"I know," Adam whispered to his empty compartment. "I never forget."

The train slowed, and through his window, Adam saw it—the castle on the hill, lit from within like a beacon, its towers reaching toward emerging stars. Students pressed against windows, exclaiming over the sight that never grew old for those who belonged here.

Adam's reflection in the glass showed a boy in proper wizard robes, trunk stored overhead, about to enter the most famous magical school in the world. Two years ago, he'd been nobody—rejected, erased, locked outside every door that mattered.

Now he was infiltrating the fortress itself.
