Chapter 494 - Chapter 494

The closing minutes belonged entirely to Manchester United.

Real Madrid continued searching for a way back into the match, but United's defensive structure refused to bend.

Every passing lane toward Benzema was closed, every second ball was contested, and every attempted switch found another red shirt waiting on the opposite side.

The difference between this Madrid side and the one United had faced two years earlier was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Cristiano Ronaldo's departure had left a void that no individual player had managed to fill.

Benzema remained an exceptional forward, but he could not simultaneously create the chances, connect the attack, and provide the relentless finishing that Cristiano once had.

Hazard had been signed to carry part of that burden.

Instead, he had left the pitch on a stretcher.

On the touchline, Zidane rubbed his head.

His expression remained controlled, but the growing anxiety beneath it was obvious.

As the clock ran down, Madrid's midfield control deteriorated.

Kroos and Modrić were forced to cover greater distances, while Casemiro found himself constantly looking over his shoulder for Ling.

Zidane wanted Ramos and Varane to step forward and create a numerical advantage in midfield.

Neither defender dared.

Whenever one of them advanced, Ling drifted into the space behind them, forcing an immediate retreat.

United did not even need to launch the counterattack; the threat alone was enough to pin Madrid's center-backs in place.

Kanté, meanwhile, delivered a masterclass in defensive coverage.

He anticipated almost every diagonal pass from Kroos and Modrić, moving before the ball was struck and repeatedly appearing wherever his teammates required support.

When Madrid shifted left, Kanté was there.

When they switched toward Rodrygo, he crossed the entire width of the pitch to close the channel.

Madrid could not escape him.

United continued threatening from the flanks whenever possession changed.

Only two superb interventions from Carvajal prevented Ling from finding another clear chance.

The match entered stoppage time.

Modrić bent forward briefly, hands resting on his thighs as he fought to control his breathing.

Madrid's attackers had failed to convert possession into danger, forcing the Croatian to continue running rather than slowing the tempo. Even a player famous for his endurance was beginning to feel the weight of the match.

He collected the ball one final time and tried to find Benzema near the edge of United's penalty area with the outside of his boot.

The pass carried slightly too much power.

It sailed over the defensive line and dropped comfortably into De Gea's hands.

The goalkeeper immediately fell onto the ball and remained there, calmly using every second the rules allowed before climbing to his feet and launching it upfield.

Ramos prepared to challenge for the clearance.

He never got the opportunity.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

The referee ended the match.

For a moment, only the Manchester United supporters could be heard.

Then Peter Drury's voice rose above them.

"REAL MADRID PROMISED REVENGE."

"MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE ANSWERED WITH AUTHORITY."

"A HEEL OF IMAGINATION FROM JEREMY LING, A HEADER OF THUNDER FROM SCOTT MCTOMINAY, AND THEN A BICYCLE KICK THAT SILENCED THE BERNABÉU."

"The reigning champions leave Madrid with two away goals, a clean sheet, and one foot planted firmly in the quarterfinals."

"Real Madrid 0. Manchester United 2."

Jim Beglin offered the final tactical assessment.

"It wasn't the open contest many expected, but United managed the match superbly. They remained compact, denied Madrid space around the box, and punished the moments when Zidane's side became stretched."

"Madrid controlled plenty of possession. United controlled where it mattered."

The home supporters unleashed another wave of boos.

Some were directed toward the referee, some toward United, and many toward Real Madrid's own players.

Ling ignored them and walked over to Bruno, giving him a firm pat on the back.

"You were excellent tonight."

Bruno had not produced a spectacular assist or an impossible piece of individual skill, but his movement had been vital.

He pressed intelligently, tracked runners, and repeatedly pulled Madrid's midfield away from the spaces Ling wanted to attack.

Against opponents like Madrid, that work had made him more valuable than another purely creative player might have been.

McTominay approached next, waving toward the away supporters.

It had been 189 days since his previous Champions League goal. He had finally ended that drought at the Bernabéu.

Ling raised an eyebrow.

"So, how's your corporate sugar mama?"

"She is not my sugar mama!"

McTominay wrapped an arm around his shoulders and laughed.

"She has a successful career and earns good money. That's completely different."

"Of course."

"Anyway, I can't compete with you. You married Guardiola's daughter."

Ling sighed.

"Are you ever going to stop bringing that up?"

"No."

McTominay glanced toward the stands.

"Have you two thought about children? Foden just posted pictures of his second kid."

"Maria hasn't graduated yet. We're both focused on our careers for now."

"That makes sense."

McTominay's expression became more serious.

"This summer could decide the Ballon d'Or again. With the European Championship coming, there are a lot of contenders."

France, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, and England all possessed squads capable of winning the tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo remained an obvious threat.

If Juventus won Serie A, advanced deep into the Champions League, and Portugal successfully defended their European title, he would become extremely difficult to beat in the voting.

De Bruyne, Kane, Pogba, and several others also had opportunities depending on how their club and international seasons ended.

United could no longer repeat the Seven-Title campaign after their League Cup elimination.

Even winning both the Premier League and Champions League might not guarantee Ling another Ballon d'Or if one of his rivals dominated the summer tournament.

"We'll see," Ling replied. "My career isn't ending this year."

He pulled his shirt over his head.

"People keep saying I haven't achieved anything with the senior national team. England might have something to say about that this summer."

He threw the jersey toward the United supporters and disappeared into the tunnel.

Several Real Madrid players watched him leave.

The same thought quietly entered more than one mind.

'What if Madrid had signed him instead of Hazard?'

The answer was painfully obvious.

Their team would have been stronger.

Hazard had spent more time recovering than playing, while Ling had arrived at the Bernabéu and decided the match with one of the finest goals the stadium had ever witnessed.

Ramos refused to accept defeat.

"We still have a chance."

His eyes remained fixed on the tunnel through which Ling had vanished.

Carvajal nodded.

"Two goals isn't impossible. There have been comebacks from worse positions—"

He stopped.

Until recently, no team had ever lost the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie by two goals at home and still advanced after the away leg.

Then Manchester United had broken that barrier.

"Forget the history," Ramos said. "We only need one objective at Old Trafford."

"Put the ball into the net."

Modrić removed his headband and released a long breath.

Madrid's midfield had not been comprehensively outplayed. On paper, they had probably possessed the greater technical quality.

But midfielders could only do so much when the attack failed to turn their work into chances.

Manchester United had the opposite advantage.

Ling could transform opportunities that barely existed into goals.

That was the kind of forward every midfielder dreamed of playing behind.

...

At the post-match press conference, Zidane attempted to remain optimistic.

"We played well for periods, particularly in the first half, but matches last ninety minutes."

"The players are frustrated, and naturally so, but complaining will not change the result."

He folded his hands on the table.

"Two goals is difficult, but the tie is not finished. We will prepare for the second leg and use the upcoming Clásico to recover our rhythm."

"Do you believe you can solve Madrid's attacking problems before Old Trafford?"

"Yes."

Zidane nodded firmly.

"I believe I have the ability to find the solution."

The flashbulbs reflected off his head so brightly that he appeared to be surrounded by a halo.

"Even when darkness comes to Madrid, the sun still rises the following morning."

His calm certainty made some United supporters unexpectedly nervous.

Zidane had developed a strange reputation for surviving impossible situations. No matter how poorly Madrid appeared to be playing, trophies and unlikely victories often seemed to follow him.

What if his mysterious luck returned at Old Trafford?

Mourinho's response was considerably less poetic.

"Let them come."

He stared directly at the reporter who had repeated Zidane's statement.

"We will be waiting."

...

The result triggered an immediate explosion across football media.

Peerless — Season One has been updated with Ling's latest chapter in Madrid.

Elsewhere in Europe, several major clubs encountered unexpected results.

Barcelona drew 1–1 with Napoli. Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich 1–0 in Germany, while Borussia Dortmund edged Paris Saint-Germain 2–1.

The knockout stage was already beginning to look unpredictable.

...

Manchester United returned to England and received only half a day of rest.

Liverpool and Manchester City remained close enough in the Premier League table that Mourinho could not afford any relaxation.

Recovery work began almost immediately, followed by another full tactical session.

Three days after the victory in Madrid, Watford arrived at Old Trafford.

Ling showed no sign of fatigue.

Grealish attacked from the left and curled a cross toward the far post. United's midfielders had surged forward together, dragging Watford's defensive line toward the center and leaving Ling momentarily unmarked.

The cross reached him at knee height.

He calmly guided it into the net.

1–0.

"GREALISH PROVIDES THE CURVE, AND LING PROVIDES THE CERTAINTY!" Gary Neville declared.

"Watford watch the red shirts flooding through the middle and lose sight of the one man they could least afford to forget."

Three minutes after halftime, Ling received the ball in his favorite channel on the left side of the penalty area.

He shifted it onto his right foot and curled a shot toward the far corner.

Ben Foster did not move.

The ball flew beyond him and kissed the inside of the post.

2–0.

"THAT PATCH OF GRASS BELONGS TO HIM!"

"Give Ling half a yard in the left channel, and he will bend the world around the goalkeeper."

Watford responded with increasing aggression.

Their defenders repeatedly fouled Ling and Grealish rather than allowing either man to turn.

By the closing stages, the match had become as much a wrestling contest as a football game.

In the 82nd minute, Cathcart finally mistimed one challenge inside the penalty area and brought Grealish down.

Penalty.

Ling placed the ball on the spot.

This time, there was no weak contact and no rebound required.

He sent Foster the wrong way and drove it firmly into the opposite corner.

3–0.

Hat-trick.

"THREE AGAIN FOR JEREMY LING!"

"Madrid felt the brilliance. Watford have endured the punishment."

When the final whistle sounded, United had preserved their lead at the top of the table with another comfortable victory.

Watford had committed twenty-one fouls.

Seven had been against Ling.

Nine had been against Grealish.

The Premier League's two most frequently fouled players had once again spent the afternoon being kicked from every direction.

Grealish appeared strangely proud of the statistic.

"It proves defenders are terrified of me."

"It proves your face irritates them," Maguire replied.

...

With no more matches remaining in February, Manchester United finally received a rare break.

Ling and Maria used the time to supervise the final stages of the renovation work at their Cheshire estate.

They were not, however, the first residents to move in.

That honor belonged to Cola and Fanta.

Havertz had decided that Manchester United's stable staff lacked the specialized knowledge required to care properly for his donkeys.

He therefore hired an experienced German caretaker and arranged for both animals to be transferred to Ling's estate.

Ling discovered this only when a transport vehicle appeared outside the gates.

He watched two donkeys emerge and stared at Havertz.

"You moved your animals into my house before I did."

"The stables are ready."

"That isn't the point."

"The caretaker says the environment is excellent."

"That still isn't the point."

Cola chose that moment to bray loudly.

Fanta immediately joined in.

Havertz smiled.

"They like it."

Ling's new stables now contained two donkeys and three tall horses.

Since Havertz had named his animals after soft drinks, Ling decided to continue the theme.

The horses became Powerade, Red Bull, and 7UP.

Maria looked at him strangely.

"Why not Pepsi?"

"They lost the sponsorship bid to Coca-Cola."

"You named our horses after companies that pay you?"

"Successful branding begins at home."

Maria walked away before he could offer any further marketing wisdom.

...

March 1st brought the 28th round of the Premier League.

Manchester United traveled to Goodison Park to face Everton.

When Ling entered the tunnel and saw Carlo Ancelotti waiting near the technical area, only one thought entered his mind.

'Another legend.'

Ancelotti had won the European Cup twice as a player and multiple Champions League titles as a manager.

League championships, Super Cups, and Club World Cups had followed him throughout his career.

Football could be strangely unfair.

Some men seemed to collect trophies wherever they went, while brilliant players such as Harry Kane could spend years waiting for even one.

Since taking charge of Everton in December, Ancelotti had already transformed their results.

Four victories, two draws, and only one defeat had lifted them toward the European places, with their only loss coming narrowly against Manchester City.

Everton had reportedly offered him close to €14 million per year, placing him behind only Mourinho and Guardiola among the league's highest-paid managers.

The investment was already showing.

From kickoff, Everton defended with impressive discipline.

Their lines remained compact, while two forwards stayed high enough to threaten United whenever possession changed.

Manchester United's progress slowed.

"Everton are extremely well organized," Beglin observed. "Ancelotti has given them security without removing their counterattacking threat."

Sandro eventually escaped down the left and attempted a cross.

The ball struck Michael Keane and went behind for a corner.

Havertz walked across to take it.

Everton's defenders immediately crowded around Ling. Ancelotti had clearly warned them that United's number 7 could not be allowed a free run at any set piece.

Havertz raised one arm and delivered the corner.

Holgate reached it first and headed clear.

Kanté collected the second ball outside the penalty area.

He shaped as though he would shoot, drawing two defenders forward, then slipped a pass back toward the left.

Havertz had remained in position after taking the corner.

He controlled the return and immediately crossed again, this time toward the far post.

Everton's defensive shape had shifted toward Kanté and Havertz.

Only one defender remained between Ling and the goal.

Ancelotti's eyes widened.

Ling planted both feet and launched himself upward, rising so quickly that he seemed to spring directly out of the turf.

He climbed above his marker and drove the header toward the near corner.

The goalkeeper reacted too late.

0–1.

Martin Tyler's voice swept across Goodison Park.

"THE FIRST CROSS WAS CLEARED. THE SECOND FOUND THE KING."

"Ling rises above Everton, and Manchester United have broken through Ancelotti's carefully constructed wall!"
