Chapter 151 - Chapter 151

Valeria, her mind still reeling from Orion's detailed explanation of Zapdos's power and the chilling revelation of HYDRA's involvement, turned to Barbara. Her expression was serious, her usual analytical curiosity now tinged with a healthy dose of apprehension.

"Okay, so Zapdos is a major issue, and HYDRA wants it," Valeria stated, her voice firm. "And frankly, my Beldum and Lunatone are not exactly equipped for legendary bird battles. We need a plan, and it needs to be smart, not just strong."

She paced a small circle, her fingers tapping against her utility belt. "My idea is this: we assemble a small, agile team. Someone who can get in close, maybe distract it. Someone with speed, and someone with… well, ideally, someone who speaks bird."

Valeria glanced at Barbara, a hopeful, almost desperate, look on her face. "We need to approach Zapdos directly, try to communicate, maybe even reason with it. A full-on assault feels like a terrible idea. We need to de-escalate, not escalate."

Barbara listened, her arms crossed, an almost imperceptible frown creasing her brow. Her gaze flickered from Valeria to Froakie, then to the Pokédex in Valeria's hand.

"A small, agile team?" Barbara echoed, her tone skeptical. "Valeria, with all due respect, we're talking about a legendary Pokémon that can control storms. And HYDRA. Wouldn't it be more logical to, you know, call in the heavy hitters? The Avengers? The Fantastic Four? Why are we trying to reinvent the wheel when we have access to the best global response teams?"

Valeria sighed, a puff of exasperation escaping her lips. "Because, Barbara, the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, as amazing as they are, they don't get Pokémon. They don't understand the nuances of connecting with them, of respecting their spirit. Their approach is always going to be about containment and neutralization."

She gestured with her free hand, emphasizing her point. "And besides," she added, almost as an afterthought, "the 'adults' are probably busy with their own world-ending problems. We can handle this. We have the knowledge, and frankly, we have the Pokémon."

Barbara let out a slow breath, the sound barely audible in the quiet room. She ran a hand through her hair, her expression shifting from skepticism to grudging consideration.

"You're not entirely wrong," Barbara conceded, her arms uncrossing as she leaned against a counter. "Hydra's involvement means this is a priority, and I do need to investigate their interest in Zapdos."

She met Valeria's earnest gaze. "And I suppose your approach, however unorthodox, might actually be more effective than blasting it with everything we've got."

Barbara nodded, a decision solidifying in her eyes. "Alright, kid. You've got a point. Let's see what your 'Pokémon-centric' plan can do."

"So, who do we even ask for help with something like this?" Barbara inquired, her voice practical as she scanned the room. Her mind was already cataloging potential allies, assessing skill sets and reliability.

Valeria didn't hesitate. "Kamala Khan and Doreen Green. They're nearby, and they've already proven they're capable trainers. Plus, their energy and their Pokémon are exactly what we'll need." Valeria's tone was decisive, her gaze fixed on a point beyond Barbara, already strategizing their next move.

Valeria's apartment in Jersey City was much like any other teenager's, cluttered but cozy. She rang the doorbell, a faint nervousness fluttering in her stomach despite her outward confidence.

The door opened, revealing Muneeba Khan, Kamala's mother, her smile warm and genuine. "Valeria! What a surprise! Come in, come in."

Valeria stepped inside, the aroma of spices and home cooking filling the air. "Thank you, Mrs. Khan. It's good to see you."

"Are you looking for Kamala?"

"Yes, Mrs. Khan, we are," Valeria replied, her tone eager. "We need her help with something important."

"And we think Doreen might be able to help too," Barbara added, her gaze steady.

"Oh, of course!" Muneeba beamed. "They're both up in Kamala's room. Go on up; I'll bring you some chai."

Valeria and Barbara thanked her and headed upstairs. They found Kamala and Doreen in Kamala's room, surrounded by superhero posters and plushies. Kamala was showing Doreen something on her laptop, while Doreen's Emolga and Kamala's Eevee played with a stray scarf on the floor.

Kamala and Doreen looked up, surprised to see Batgirl and Valeria at the door. Doreen's face lit up with pure excitement.

"Ooh, hey! Are you guys here to hang out?" Doreen chirped, already imagining a super-sleepover. "We can totally have a Pokémon-themed pajama party! I've got snacks, and my Emolga can probably make tiny electric s'mores!"

Kamala offered a more reserved but friendly smile, a touch of surprise still evident in her eyes.

Valeria, however, cut straight to the chase, her expression serious. "While that sounds fun, it's actually quite urgent," she began, her voice lacking any hint of her usual playful rebelliousness. "We need your help. There's a situation with Zapdos, and HYDRA is involved."

Valeria then quickly explained the problem, which was to find Zapdos and stop HYDRA.

Valeria's explanation hung in the air, a serious topic that seemed a bit out of place amidst the cheerful Pokémon plushies and the faint hum of electronics. Kamala and Doreen exchanged glances, their initial excitement about the tournament quickly giving way to a more thoughtful expression.

"Zapdos?" Kamala repeated, her brow furrowing slightly. "And… HYDRA? That sounds, like, really dangerous. We saw how powerful that electric Pokémon was in the mountain."

Doreen nodded vigorously, her squirrel tail giving a nervous twitch. "Yeah, that Zapdos looked like it could short-circuit the whole city! And HYDRA? They're the bad guys who want to take over the world, right? That sounds… a lot bigger than a friendly Pokémon battle."

Valeria understood their hesitation. She knew it wasn't a simple mission, and the thought of confronting HYDRA, especially with such a powerful Pokémon involved, was daunting. However, she also saw the earnestness in their eyes and the loyalty radiating from their Pokémon partners, Eevee and Emolga, who seemed to sense the gravity of the situation and stood ready.

"I know it's a big ask," Valeria said, her voice earnest. "And I wouldn't ask if it wasn't important. But the world is changing, and we need to be ready. I believe in you two, and I believe in your Pokémon. You've shown incredible courage and smarts already."

Kamala looked at Eevee, who chirped softly and nudged her hand. Doreen looked at Emolga, who gave a determined squeak and fluffed its cheeks. A shared resolve passed between the three girls.

"Okay, Valeria," Kamala said, a determined smile gracing her lips. "We're in. We'll help you."

Doreen nodded enthusiastically, her squirrelly optimism returning. "Yeah! We'll go find Zapdos and make sure HYDRA doesn't mess anything up! We've got this!"

Valeria beamed, relief washing over her. "Thank you both. I knew I could count on you."

Just then, the door to Kamala's room opened, and Muneeba Khan appeared, balancing a tray with three steaming cups of chai. "I thought you girls might like some refreshment," she said, her smile warm.

Valeria and Barbara glanced at each other. The urgency of the mission was still there, but with the plan in motion and the promise of chai, the immediate pressure seemed to lift slightly.

"Oh, thank you, Mrs. Khan," Valeria said, accepting a cup. "That's perfect."

"Yes, thank you!" Barbara added, her earlier intensity softening. Perhaps a moment to regroup and strategize over a warm drink wouldn't hurt before diving headfirst into a legendary Pokémon showdown with HYDRA.
