Chapter 33: The Broken
KRAKOOOM—
Burn Fireblaze hits the dish floor and the stadium ignites.
Gold-crimson fire tears forty feet straight up out of the impact point — no build, no warning, just heat slamming into the front rows hard enough that people throw their arms up before they've decided to. A woman in row four drops her phone. The man beside her doesn't notice. Neither of them looks away from the dish.
The crowd finds its voice. A wall of sound, a hundred thousand people recognizing fire, recognizing spectacle, recognizing the thing they came here for.
FWUMP.
Black Dranzer lands.
The fire goes quiet — the way a voice goes quiet when something larger enters the room. The golden light pulls from the dish floor like something flinching, and in the space it leaves, frost crawls outward from Black Dranzer's tip in thin, branching lines.
Tik.
Tik-tik.
Tik.
The smell reaches row one first. Frozen ash. Burnt copper underneath it, thick enough to coat the back of the throat.
The cheer dies in stages. Section by section. The cold moving through the crowd the same way the frost moves through the dish — patient, branching, unstoppable. A hundred thousand people end up holding something in their chests that isn't quite excitement anymore and can't explain why.
In the broadcast booth, DJ's hand grips the edge of his platform.
***
"ALRIGHT, PEOPLE!" His voice snaps out over the silence, practiced reflex, fifteen years of knowing when a crowd needs a push. "YOU ARE WATCHING HISTORY! KAI HIWATARI — THE DARK HORSE — VERSUS THE BLAZING LEGEND PHOENIX! THIS IS WHAT BATTLE BLADERS *IS!*"
The crowd responds. Grateful for somewhere to put the energy.
Phoenix rolls his shoulders and grins beneath his mask, spreading his arms wide, soaking in the noise like he personally manufactured it. Burn Fireblaze hums in the dish, its Metal Change tip already beginning its first exploratory orbit, trailing a ribbon of warm gold flame behind it.
"Speed Blitz!"
SKRRRRRRT—
Fireblaze bites the dish wall and launches — wide orbit, blazing, the Metal Change tip catching and releasing in a rhythm that blurs the bey into a solid ring of standing flame. Gold. Unbroken. The heat rolls off it in waves, pushing against the tar-and-ash cold, and the front rows lean into the warmth gratefully. Fire that makes sense. Fire that smells right.
"Out-run him!" Phoenix's golden scarf snaps.
Black Dranzer doesn't move.
It spins. Low. Tight. The aura pooling off it doesn't rise — it stays flat against the dish floor, spreading under Fireblaze's orbit. Slow. Even. Patient in the specific way of something that has done this before and knows how it ends.
Kai's arms stay crossed.
Fireblaze completes the circuit. Tightens. Completes it again.
Black Dranzer still doesn't move.
"Why isn't he—" DJ's voice, stripped of broadcast cadence, bleeding raw into the open mic he forgot to cut. A hundred thousand people hear it. "Why isn't he doing anything—"
He catches himself. Clears his throat.
Says nothing else.
The crowd doesn't fill the silence. They sit in it.
***
In the waiting rooms, every screen shows the same dish.
Gingka Hagane stands six inches from his monitor with Spiral Pegasus gripped in left hand, watching Black Dranzer not move, and something about the patience of it — the absolute, unhurried certainty — makes his palms go cold.
He's not reacting, Gingka thinks. He's waiting for something.
What is he waiting for?
***
"Blazing Gigs."
SHRAAAK—
White-black light. One streak. The vacuum tunnel it tears through the air collapses so fast the CRACK of displaced thunder reaches the front rows before they've finished registering the motion — Burn Fireblaze's perfect orbit shatters outward, bey spinning wild toward the dish wall, tip catching, dragging it back.
Fireblaze is still spinning. Still in the dish. Technically.
The orbit is gone.
Phoenix's feet shift on his mark — just slightly, just enough that one knee bends a fraction, one foot slides back, a man catching himself on a stair he didn't see.
Kai sees it.
There it is.
"You knew." Ryo's voice comes out low. The showman stripped back to the thing underneath. "From the start."
"Before you finished your introduction." Kai doesn't look at him. He's watching Black Dranzer. "The performance was for them."
Ryo exhales once through his nose. The golden scarf settles. The crowd noise drops away from him like a coat he's put down.
"Then let's stop."
***
The golden phoenix avatar tears free.
WHUMMMM
Building from the dish floor up through Ryo's boots, up through his legs, into his chest — and forty feet of golden fire wingspan erupts over the dish.
In the stands, the crowd roars. They can feel the heat on their faces.
This — this— is what they came for.
The bladers watching the screens in the waiting rooms see something else.
They see a phoenix that has carried this man for years. That has been his compass and his anchor. Wings that have never once in their existence been given permission to be anything other than controlled, other than careful, other than enough— and now, finally, no audience left to perform for, stretching everything it has across the dish and meaning it.
"Fireblaze." Ryo's voice drops to something nobody in the stands can hear. "Everything."
"Burning Fire Strike"
KROOOOM—
The avatar dives.
Kai moves his right arm forming a fist.
GHHHHK—
---
The impact doesn't look like much from the stands. Two beys meeting. A flash of collision. The crowd expects an explosion, a shockwave, something large — and what they get is a sound that doesn't match the motion. A grinding, low-frequency HHHHNNNN that reverberates through the dish floor and up through the seats and into the soles of a hundred thousand pairs of feet.
"What—" DJ leans forward. "What just happened — officials, do we have an angle on—"
The cameras find it on the third try.
Black Dranzer's fusion wheel has locked onto Fireblaze's rotation. Not struck it. Locked — the two beys spinning in contact, Black Dranzer's edge finding Fireblaze's attack points and holding there, a millimeter of grinding contact maintained with a precision that should be physically impossible.
The golden avatar above the dish shudders.
One feather.
Gold — pure gold, warm gold, the specific gold of something that chose its color — and then. Grey at the tip first, the color draining downward like a watercolor left in the rain, and the grey feather doesn't fall. It dissolves. It pulls apart into threads of raw light that stream toward Black Dranzer's fusion wheel in long, reaching ribbons.
Only the bladers see it. The bladers watching screens in waiting rooms. Tsubasa. Yu. Reiji. Kenta. Kyoya.
Kyoya, who has fought Kai. Who watches the grey feather dissolve and says nothing at all and does not look away.
In the stands, the crowd sees Fireblaze wobbling. Sees the orbit getting smaller. Reads it as a close match. They're on their feet. They're screaming Phoenix's name.
They're watching something completely different than what is actually happening.
***
The second feather goes. The third.
The phoenix tries to fold its wings. Tries to pull them back, make itself smaller, make itself harder to reach—
WHUMMP.
Black Dranzer pulses, and something vast and dark moves inside it — not visible, not hearable, only felt, a pressure drop that makes three people in the front rows grab their ears simultaneously — and the wings snap open against the phoenix's will. Stretched wide. Every feather exposed.
The drain accelerates.
Gold becoming grey becoming nothing becoming light becoming ribbons, streaming, streaming, faster — a waterfall running the wrong direction, feeding into Black Dranzer's fusion wheel and vanishing into it like water into stone.
Ryo feels the first one go.
A warmth — the warmth that has lived in the left side of his chest since the first day he and Fireblaze found each other,
Toward the contact point.
Toward Black Dranzer.
His knees buckle. He catches himself — barely, one foot sliding back, thigh shaking — and the cold that rushes into the space the warmth left is the cold of a room he's never been in.
"What's happening?" DJ's voice. Quieter now. He doesn't know what he's watching. "Phoenix seems to be struggling — officials, are we seeing the beys in contact—"
The crowd reads his uncertainty. The noise shifts. Fifty thousand people who were screaming Phoenix's name ten seconds ago start screaming it differently now. The difference between come on and please.
The second ribbon of light leaves Ryo's chest.
He goes down on one knee.
His mouth opens. He means to say something — a command, a technique name, anything — and what comes out is a breath that doesn't sound like him. Thin. Ragged. Confused. The breath of a man whose body is trying to explain something to him that he doesn't have words for yet.
The phoenix is half-grey. Still screaming. Its eyes — gold, always gold, the same gold as his scarf, the same gold as the fire he has carried for years — are filming over. The light in them pulling away in threads, the same direction, toward Black Dranzer, toward the drain —
WHUMMP. WHUMMP.
---
"Dranzer end this. Blazing Gigs—" said Kai.
"—Tempest."
His eyes ignite. Crimson — deep, burning crimson, pupils blown wide and then gone, the red swallowing everything, flooding out to the whites — and around them, bleeding outward from the corners, the black. Black, spreading across his cheekbones and in thin branching lines, the same pattern as the frost on the dish floor, the same patient geometry.
Black Dranzer screams.
GRAOOOOOOOOOOOM—
The dark fire erupts off the fusion wheel. Forty feet. Sixty. Black shot through with stolen gold, crackling at the edges, sharp forks of purple lightning jumping off the dark flame in stuttering arcs — kzzt — kzzt — kzt —
And from Kai's back —
Wings.
Thirty feet. Forty. Black feathers edged with violet lightning, each one shedding sparks that die before they hit the dish floor. Growing from somewhere between his shoulder blades. Vast. Jagged.
In the stands, a hundred thousand people see a teenage boy standing very still with his eyes closed and his arms loose at his sides.
They see the dish floor fracturing outward from Black Dranzer in a starburst of cracks. They feel the cold hit them like a wall — row one to row ten in under a second, breath blooming white, hands going numb on the rails. They hear the feedback scream from the stadium speakers and cover their ears.
They do not see the wings.
The woman in row four is crying. She doesn't know why. She will not be able to explain it later. She isn't the only one.
The bladers see it.
A bladers's launcher hits the floor of his waiting room. He doesn't pick it up.
The last gold feather dissolves.
The phoenix falls silent.
What's left isn't the shape of a phoenix at all — a smear of grey light orbiting Black Dranzer's fusion wheel in a slow, fading ellipse, dimmer with every pass. An ember that has given up on being fire.
TINK.
Burn Fireblaze tips onto its side.
The black ice comes immediately — crawling from the tip, sealing it flat, spreading up the fusion wheel in those same branching lines.
Tik. Tik-tik. Tik.
***
Ryo Hagane's second knee finds the floor.
Both hands now. The cold in his chest is a room without furniture, without walls he recognizes, without the warmth that was his compass for fifteen years. He breathes into it. Feels the edges of it. Tries to find the thing that used to live there and finds only the shape of where it was — perfectly, completely empty.
His hand comes to rest six inches from his bey.
Just — there can't help anymore.
The frost doesn't melt.
DJ raises his microphone.
His mouth hanging open.
He has been doing this for fifteen years. He has called upsets and legends and moments that get replayed at the end of every season with slow music underneath them. He has never once been unable to find the words.
He finds four.
"What..." A breath. "...was that."
Nobody answers.
Nobody in the building makes a sound.
***
Ryo turns his head toward the camera feeding the waiting rooms.
He knows which one. He has known since he walked in.
His voice comes out quiet. Level. A man setting something down that he carried a long way.
"Get back up, kid."
***
GINGKA'S ROOM
Dad.
The word doesn't make it out.
His brain catches up with the screen. His father's face. His father's voice, turned toward the camera — toward him — and his father is lying on the floor out cold.
Gingka's lungs are breathing without asking him and his hand—
SLAM.
Palm against cold metal.
SLAM. SLAM.
He can't reach for Spiral Pegasus. Can't make himself move toward the launcher because his father — his father — is, and the screen won't cut away and the three words keep arriving in his chest like something being driven in—
Get back up.
Get back up.
Get—
His lungs breathe without him.
On the screen, Kai walks toward the tunnel without looking back.
***
Back on the dish, Black Dranzer returns to Kai's palm.
It pulses. Dark — but underneath the dark, something warm.
Kai looks at it for one second.
Then he looks at the camera directly across the dish.
"Look at him, Gingka. This is the man you cried for."
"Come and avenge him. I am hungry—"
DJ raises his microphone.
His jaw works once.
"Kai Hiwatari." Stripped of everything except the fact of it. "Advances."
He clicks the mic off.
The Jumbotron bracket flickers. Phoenix's card goes grey. The name dims beneath a red cross that blinks twice and settles.
One card over — unprompted, no system flag entered — kyoya's card ghosts grey for half a heartbeat. A red cross blinking.
The system catches itself. Snaps back to active.
***
On the dish floor, Ryo Hagane's hand lies inches from his bey.
