The others went in ones and twos over the next half hour, in the directions they had come from. Heiteng did not.
He stood looking at Huifu's hole for some while after everybody else had stopped looking at it.
"It is a pity we have no demons," he said.
Jayde was four paces up the track. She stopped on the fourth one.
"Say that again."
"A Terracore demon of any standing would have given you the whole three hundred feet before noon. True walls. You could have run a cart down it."
"That's a hundred feet an hour through basalt."
"Nearer two."
"Nearer — " She came back down the track without noticing that she had. "And tired at the end?"
"No."
"Not even a little."
"He would go home, eat a large dinner, and complain about the rock."
Jayde stood there for a moment with her hands in her coat.
"Right," she said. "Sit down."
"I was not going to."
