"This turn, I'll defeat the Phantom Demon!"
Tragodia drew a card from his hand.
"First, this card.
Continuous Magic 'Dark Sun'!"
The Magic Card appeared in his backfield. A surge of dark power gathered, manifesting in the sky behind him as a sun-like image, but burning with hellish black flames.
"As long as 'Dark Sun' is on the field, whenever my monster is destroyed, I can recover Life Points equal to that monster's Attack Power." (Original Card)
Tragodia said coldly, then with a wave of his hand, played another card.
"Speed Attack Magic 'Heavy and Dull'!
Choose a face-up monster on the field, that monster's Attack Power decreases by its own Defense Power until the end of the turn!"
He pointed at the giant monster on Yugen's field.
"Thunder Emperor Harmon's Attack Power decreases by its own Defense Power!"
It was as if the force of a thousand times gravity acted upon Harmon. The gravity wave pressed on it like an invisible mountain, pulling Harmon so much that its feet broke the ground beneath, nearly losing its footing.
"Harmon's Attack Power and Defense Power are both four thousand," Yugen said blandly.
[Thunder Emperor Harmon, Attack Power 4000 → Attack Power 0]
"Sure enough, Magic still works on the Phantom Demon," Tragodia sneered.
He didn't understand the Phantom Demon, but he knew a little about the Phantom God. Even gods are subject to Magic for one turn.
Though his conclusion was correct, in reality, the Phantom Demon's resistance is unaffected by Magic outside of this turn, which is different from the Phantom God.
"Battle, Desolate Dead strike down the Phantom Demon!"
The mummy sprang forward, throwing a powerful punch wrapped in bandages. But before the punch could land, it felt a countering gravity force, and the mummy collapsed to the ground, immobilized by the gravity wave.
"What?" Tragodia was startled.
"Continuous Trap 'Super Gravity Net'," Yugen pointed to the open Cover Card in his backfield, "All Level Four and above monsters cannot attack.
Desolate Dead is Level Five, so its attack is naturally sealed."
Tragodia's pupils shrank.
Super Gravity Net, Level Four and above monsters...
Right. Although the Phantom Demon is above Level Four, it's unaffected by Traps, pairing with this card to form a one-sided attack seal.
Thinking of this made him look even grimmer.
This was a tactic only this guy could think of.
Despite suppressing the Phantom Demon's power, Tragodia was annoyed at being unable to attack, letting out a huff.
"Then I'll activate the Magic Card 'Fallen Objects of the Dead,'" Tragodia said, "For each Magic and Trap Card in my graveyard, I recover 500 Life Points." (Original Card)
A few cards from the graveyard appeared on his field.
"There are currently five Magic Traps in my graveyard, so I recover 2500 Life Points."
[Tragodia, LP 1000 → LP 3500]
"Set two cards, end my turn."
"Two more backfield cards..."
Chazz couldn't help but comment.
And the first turn was also backfield with two cover cards passed directly.
Judai understood what he meant: "Hmm, this guy... might surprisingly be the same type of Duelist as Yugen."
"End of the turn phase, the Phantom Demon's power returns to normal," Yugen said.
Heavy and Dull only lasted one turn. The gravity-like confinement disappeared, Harmon raised its head to roar, the sky crackling with thunder converging on it, turning into countless Electric Snakes coursing through its skeleton.
It rose again.
"My turn, draw."
Yugen glanced at the card he drew.
"Magic Card 'Planet Transformation.' Add a Field Spell from the Card Deck to my hand.
I add this card from the Card Deck..."
He drew the card that automatically popped out from his Card Deck.
"Field Spell 'Lost Paradise' added to hand."
As he spoke, the extra slot on the Duel Disc's Monster Zone popped out.
"Field Spell 'Lost Paradise' activated."
The scene abruptly changed to a dark wasteland. The Thunder Emperor stood mightily on that barren land and, with a roar, seemed even more powerful several times over.
"Lost Paradise is the exclusive field for the Phantom Demon," Yugen said, "When there's a Phantom Demon on your field, once per turn, you can draw two cards from your Card Deck."
An extremely powerful field effect, and after becoming a Physical Card, it has been strengthened. Not only does it retain the ability to draw cards every turn, but it also adds resistance, making the Three Phantom Demons on your field not targets of opponent's effects, nor destroyed by opponent's effects when on this field.
Many people have long believed the animated Lost Paradise effect was not drawing two cards, but searching for any two cards from the Card Deck once per turn. The basis is Kagemaru's original phrasing when introducing this card, which was "once per turn, add two cards from your Card Deck to your hand."
However, regards to Kagemaru's card introductions, it actually may recede in search, and every time the Lost Paradise effect is activated, it seems as if he's drawing cards. Hence, this might be an animation effect expression issue, not truly a from-the-deck search for any two cards.
Similarly, when Mitsuzawa summoned "Mathematician" in the animation, his original words were "when this card is sent to the graveyard after being destroyed in battle, add a card from the Card Deck to your hand."
But when Mathematician was destroyed by battle, Mitsuzawa only drew a card, and shouted "Draw Card." Therefore, drawing a conclusion based on this, the situation with Lost Paradise might be similar. The phrase "add two cards from the Card Deck to your hand" means to draw cards.
Furthermore, if Kagemaru could indeed search any two cards from his Card Deck every turn, it would be quite abstract how he contested evenly with Judai yet still lost. Judai's Philosopher's Stone only allows for the selection of three cards from the Card Deck, whereas he could choose two each turn; if he had selected a few extra wind spells, Judai would have been defeated long before. It doesn't make sense in the context of the Duel.
"Since I have Thunder Emperor on my field, I draw two cards from my Card Deck."
Yugen drew two cards.
"Then I normally summon Phantom Gunman."
[Phantom Gunman, Attack Power 1100]
This is another subordinate monster used by Yubel in the animation.
"Phantom Gunman's effect, when this card is successfully summoned, I can Special Summon 'Gunman Derivative(s)' on my field, up to the number of monsters on my field."
"The number of monsters on the field."
Tragodia frowned, looking at Thunder Emperor Harmon and Phantom Gunman on Yugen's field.
"You have two monsters on the field."
"Exactly, so I Special Summon two 'Gunman Derivatives.'
[Gunman Derivative, Defense Power 0] x2
"Summoning three monsters at once!" Judai praised.
Tragodia sneered: "Hah, trash monsters even if there are more of them..."
But before he could finish, Yugen smiled slightly.
"Then, I offer the two 'Gunman Derivatives' and 'Phantom Gunman' on the field as sacrifices!"
Tragodia: "!"
A monster that requires three sacrifices to summon?
Monsters six stars and above only require two sacrifices to summon, even ten stars and twelve stars adhere to this rule. Unless it's a card like a god that explicitly states "requires three sacrifices for an Upper-level Summon."
"This card cannot be normally summoned; it can only be Special Summoned using three sacrifices."
Yugen raised the card in his hand high.
"I summon the Third Phantom Demon——
——Phantom Demon Emperor Rabiel, Summon!!!"
