Chapter 38 - 5: SPECIAL - “THE FINAL NIGHT BEFORE THE RITUAL”

The night before they performed the ritual that would bind them to the World Tree, Kai and Yuhan stood alone in their quarters, neither speaking.

"We don't have to do this," Kai finally said.

"Yes, we do. We've been over this."

"I know. But I need to say it one more time—we could run. Leave the cultivation world behind. Let someone else save it."

Yuhan turned to face him. "Could we? Could you really abandon everyone, knowing what happens if we don't act?"

"No," Kai admitted. "But I had to offer."

"I know." Yuhan crossed the room, taking Kai's hands. "I'm scared too. Scared of losing this—our life, our freedom, the simple joy of being together without cosmic responsibility."

"But we're doing it anyway."

"Because it's right. Because we're the only ones who can. Because..." Yuhan's voice cracked. "Because I'd rather spend eternity bound to a tree with you than have a mortal lifetime without you."

Kai pulled him close, holding tight. "We've had two lifetimes together. Maybe that's more than most people get."

"It's not enough. It'll never be enough." Yuhan buried his face in Kai's neck. "I want centuries more. I want to grow old with you, watch our students have students, see the world we built continue evolving."

"We'll still see it. Just... differently."

They stood like that for a long time, just holding each other, memorizing the feeling of solid bodies, beating hearts, mortal warmth.

Finally, Yuhan pulled back. "Make love to me. One last time as ourselves before we become something else."

They moved to the bed, shedding clothes with trembling hands. Every touch was precious, weighted with finality. Every kiss a goodbye and a promise.

Kai mapped Yuhan's body with his hands, his lips, committing every detail to memory. The small scar on his shoulder from their first mission. The birthmark on his hip. The way he gasped when Kai kissed that spot just below his ear.

Yuhan did the same, worshipping Kai's body like it was sacred. Kissing every old wound, every imperfection, every part of him.

When they finally joined, it was with tears streaming down both their faces. Moving together, desperately, trying to make the moment last forever.

"I love you," Kai whispered. "In this life, the last life, whatever comes after. I love you."

"I love you too," Yuhan answered. "Forever. Even beyond forever."

They held each other after, neither sleeping, just existing in their last hours as mortal, separate beings.

As dawn broke, they dressed in ceremonial robes. White for Yuhan, black for Kai.

"Ready?" Kai asked.

"No. But let's do it anyway." Yuhan took his hand.

They walked to the ritual site hand in hand, facing their destiny with courage born from love.

Whatever came next, they'd face it as they'd faced everything else—together.

And that made even eternity bearable.
