Chapter 412: Raging Tide: Outrage Slaughter!!
A Champion-level Mega Gyarados losing control was a terrifying prospect. In its
berserk state, the serpent was a literal force of nature that could level entire
city blocks.
Fortunately, Kenji had Beedrill. The Ace had spent the last few weeks acting as
a "drill sergeant," keeping the serpent in check. Whenever Gyarados lost its
mind during the development of this new move, Beedrill would physically beat it
back into its base form.
Through this brutal, iterative process, Mega Gyarados had finally managed to
weaponize its madness.
"ROAAAARRRRR!!!!! —"
In the center of the arena, Mega Gyarados's presence spiked to a level that made
the air feel thick and oily. Its massive side-fins unfurled, blotting out the
light. White steam began to hiss off its sapphire scales, which were rapidly
shifting into a bruised, ominous red.
Mason Chu's pupils shrank. He stared up at the transforming monster with a look
of pure dread.
I can't dodge this...
Even though Mega Gyarados hadn't launched the attack yet, every cell in Mason's
body was screaming at him to run. He knew instinctively that his partner—the
hardiest tank in the Huaxia League—could not survive what was coming.
KRA-KOOM!!!!!!! —
Mega Gyarados dove from the sky. As it moved, a massive phantom erupted from its
body—not a skeletal dragon this time, but a solid, blood-red Western-style
dragon silhouette. It was a beast of pure malice, wings spread wide as it roared
alongside the serpent.
In many cultures, the Western Dragon was seen as an incarnation of evil and
destruction—a stark contrast to the noble Eastern Dragon. This form was the
physical embodiment of the hatred and fury driving the move.
Opposite this nightmare, Mega Steelix's Rollout had reached its absolute damage
cap. It was a spinning ball of pure kinetic energy.
But against the Raging Tide: Outrage Slaughter, it was like a tricycle trying to
stop a freight train.
Realizing the futility of an offensive trade, Mason made a split-second decision
to abort the "Meteor" and hide.
"Steelix!! Protect!!"
BOOM!!!!!! —
The impact was beyond anything the Phoenix Nest had seen. A sound like a nuclear
detonation ripped through the stadium, so loud it threatened to burst the
eardrums of anyone without specialized hearing protection.
CRACK-SHATTER!!!! —
The secondary energy barrier—the one reinforced with Mewtwo's psychic
residue—suddenly emitted a series of sharp, crystalline pops.
A dense web of spider-fissures spread across the translucent dome. Stray
shockwaves leaked through the cracks, manifesting as a violent gale that swept
across the trainer boxes.
The wind hit Kenji like a physical wall, nearly knocking him off his feet. He
raised an arm to shield his face, his clothes snapping violently in the wind.
The sheer friction of the air against his skin was actually painful.
Ten long seconds passed before the wind finally died down. Kenji lowered his
arm, his eyes scanning the field. The arena was buried under a shroud of thick,
roiling smoke.
Across the field, Mason Chu stood motionless. His face was a mask of absolute
shock, his mouth working silently as he stared at the center of the ruin. He
didn't need the smoke to clear to know the result.
As the grit settled, Gyarados was revealed. It had already reverted to its base
form—a necessary safety measure Kenji had programmed into the link. If it stayed
in Mega form after that move, it would have gone on a localized rampage that
even Kenji couldn't stop.
On the other side of the crater lay Steelix. It, too, had reverted to its base
form, but not by choice. It was twisted and battered, lying unconscious amidst
the rubble of the floor.
"Steelix is unable to battle!! Gyarados wins the match!!!"
"All six of the Southeast Elite's Pokémon are unable to battle!!!
Congratulations to Kenji for winning the first leg of the Championship Road!!!"
The first step was taken. The veteran Steel-master had been cleared.
Mason Chu offered a weary but genuine smile. He hadn't expected to win, but he
hadn't expected to be shut out so completely either. He walked to the center of
the field and gave Kenji a firm, respect-filled handshake. He was disappointed
to have not seen Beedrill, but the power of the serpent had been enough to
satisfy his warrior's heart.
After healing his team at the facility's medical center, Kenji departed the
Southeast Branch. On the journey back, he pulled up his System interface.
Ding!!! Hex Core drawing...
The pointer spun with a blur of golden light before slowing to a stop.
Ding!!! Congratulations Host on obtaining the Gold Hex Core: [Archangel's
Embrace]!!!
[Gold Hex Core: Archangel's Embrace] Effect: Gain one Archangel's Staff. Special
Condition: If the wearer's base Special Attack is higher than 500, move
execution speed is increased by 20%.
Kenji hummed. It was an equipment-based augment. Since his team leaned more
toward high-speed physical brawlers and hybrid attackers, he didn't have many
pure Special Attack nukes besides Bellossom and Darkrai. Still, a 20% speed
boost to casting was a powerful tool to have in his pocket.
Kenji was currently traveling atop Ditto, who had transformed into a majestic
Pidgeot. He leaned back, letting the wind whip past him as he looked toward the
horizon.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!!!! —
Suddenly, Kenji's phone erupted with an emergency alert. He pulled it out, and
his heart skipped a beat as the screen flared with a violent red Huaxia League
"Calamity Warning."
This was a localized broadcast sent to all registered high-level trainers in the
vicinity. It was a call to arms for an imminent threat.
Kenji checked the coordinates. The alert originated from Liangdu (Cool City) in
the Southern Cloud Province.
Liangdu? That's not far from here.
Kenji didn't hesitate. He nudged Ditto, pointing it toward the south. "Change
course! Full speed!"
As he approached the city, he saw the smoke first.
What the hell...?
Kenji's pupils contracted. Looking down, he saw a fire of biblical proportions.
The forest was an ocean of orange and red, the flames stretching for a hundred
miles. A mountain fire was raging out of control, fueled by an unnatural
intensity. At its current rate of expansion, the city of Liangdu would be
swallowed by evening.
Kenji touched down near a frontline coordination post. He saw a crowd of frantic
League prosecutors, local trainers, and specialized Water-type squads standing
several miles back from the fire line. They were looking at the inferno with
expressions of pure despair.
"What's going on?!" Kenji shouted, running up to a lead prosecutor. "Why aren't
you guys dropping rain? Why is the fire still spreading?"
The prosecutor whipped around, ready to snap at the interloper, but he froze
when he saw Kenji's face. "Grand Champion Kenji?!! Sir, thank god you're here!"
Kenji ignored the title. "The fire. Why isn't it being contained?"
The prosecutor's eyes were filled with a mix of terror and hope, like a man
reaching for a life raft. "It's not a normal fire, sir. We can't put it out.
There are three legendary Moltres fighting in the heart of that forest. Unless
those birds are neutralized, the fire will burn until there's nothing left but
ash."
Three??? Moltres???
Kenji's mind reeled. For three Legendary Birds to congregate in one place was an
omen of disaster.
Legendaries were solitary by nature. For three of them to be locked in a
territorial war... something was very, very wrong.
