Chapter 290: Competing???!
"Grandma, you should really cut back on the fried food. It's not good for your health," Tyson Tang said cautiously, eyeing the elderly woman hunched over on his sofa.
This was none other than Grandma Liu. On the table in front of her sat several boxes of fried chicken. Most were already empty, leaving behind nothing but a few crumbs of crispy skin and a thin layer of grease.
Grandma Liu tossed a chicken wing bone back into the box and wiped her fingers with a napkin. As she cleaned her hands, she lowered her voice conspiratorially. "Tyson, boy, do you know the secret to how I've lived this long?"
"..." Tyson's mouth twitched. After a moment of hesitation, he asked, "What is it?"
"I never mind other people's business," Grandma Liu said dryly.
"..." Tyson wisely shut his mouth.
"I'm at an age where I could drop dead at any second anyway..." Grandma Liu started to ramble nonchalantly, but Tyson quickly cut her off before she could get too morbid.
Knock, knock, knock...
The sound of knocking saved Tyson. His eyes lit up as he pointed toward the door. "Grandma, that's got to be Kenji."
He practically sprinted to the door and pulled it open. Sure enough, Kenji was standing there.
"Come in, come in!" Tyson greeted him enthusiastically.
Kenji nodded and walked inside. Seeing the elderly woman, he bowed respectfully. "Grandma Liu."
Grandma Liu chuckled and waved him over. "Alright, alright, enough with the formalities. Come sit down."
"Grandma, why didn't you say anything? You just showed up out of the blue," Kenji asked.
She waved a hand dismissively. "Why should I tell you? I'm not staying in Metropolis long anyway. I only came here to drop off these two little guys."
With a flick of her wrist, she produced two Poké Balls and handed them to Kenji.
Unmistakably, they contained Beedrill and Arbok.
Kenji took the balls and clipped them to his belt. "Where are you heading then, Grandma?" he asked curiously.
Grandma Liu smiled mischievously. "Since I've already left the mountain, wouldn't it be a waste not to enter the Huaxia League Conference just for fun?"
"?????" Kenji stared at her, dumbfounded.
What?
Grandma Liu?
In the National League?
"You're going to compete in the League Conference??!" Kenji's voice jumped an octave.
Grandma Liu remained perfectly calm, nodding slowly. "Why not? Is there a problem?"
Kenji turned to look at Tyson. Tyson's expression was priceless, but he didn't look surprised—he clearly already knew.
An Elite Four member from a century ago, re-entering the National League after a hundred years of seclusion...
Kenji could only imagine the absolute chaos it would cause if her identity was revealed.
As if reading his mind, Grandma Liu pulled out a mask from her robes.
It was a simple mask that covered her entire face, leaving only slits for her eyes. The design was eerie and menacing, depicting the snarling face of an Arbok.
"If you see me in the tournament, remember to call me Elder Venom," she said, her voice muffled and distorted behind the mask.
Kenji had assumed she was just coming to cheer him on; he never expected her to lace up her boots and get on the field herself.
According to her plan, Grandma Liu didn't intend to enter the regional qualifiers through the Southeast District.
The Huaxia League Conference started with massive open qualifiers across five major districts. Only the top 200 from each district would advance to the final tournament in the Capital City.
Since Kenji was registered in Metropolis, he would naturally be in the Southwest District.
If Grandma Liu entered the same district, there was a chance they'd knock each other out in the prelims, which wouldn't be any fun.
"Aiyah, time is short. I need to get moving. I still need six more badges," Grandma Liu said, holding up her hand. Two badges sat in her palm.
One was the Metropolis Badge, the other the Southern Cloud Badge.
For someone of her caliber, the Gym Challenge was less of a "challenge" and more like "smurfing" in a low-rank lobby.
Grandma Liu was a woman of action. Without even stopping for a proper meal, she strode out of the Metropolis Gym.
"Kenji, boy! I'll see you at the Conference!"
With that, she vanished down the street.
Once she was gone, Kenji finally released Beedrill and Arbok.
The two Pokémon were ecstatic to see him, immediately crowding around and nudging him affectionately.
