Chapter 284: Nightmare
Unlike major cities that all had Pokémon Centers, small towns like Moon Lake Town didn't always have one.
However, since Moon Lake Town was a remote but popular tourist destination, it did have a Pokémon Center.
Compared to urban Pokémon Centers, this one was much smaller, with streamlined facilities.
But as the saying goes, "The sparrow may be small, but it has all the vital organs."
Although small, the Pokémon Center still offered essential services like lodging and medical care.
Kenji arrived at the Pokémon Center.
Sure enough, it was empty. Besides a few staff members, there were no other trainers or Pokémon.
Kenji checked in. The young girl at the reception desk also sported prominent dark circles under her eyes, which even light makeup couldn't conceal.
After checking in, Kenji had a simple lunch and then went out for a stroll around Moon Lake Town.
Moon Lake Town lived up to its reputation as a tourist destination. The scenery was indeed beautiful, especially now with the rare silence brought by the lack of tourists.
"Phew..." Kenji looked up at the clock tower near White Moon Lake.
Although the town was famous for the lake, the clock tower was also a landmark.
Hands in his pockets, Kenji stared silently at the top of the tower.
At the very top sat an antique yellow-bronze bell. It looked quite old, contrasting sharply with the newer architecture of the town.
According to the Legendary Locator, Darkrai was hiding inside that clock tower.
"Do you sense anything?" Kenji turned to Ninetales, who had transformed into a beautiful human woman to blend in.
Ninetales shook her head.
"No," she communicated telepathically.
Makes sense. If Darkrai were that easy to find, the League investigators would have already caught it before Kenji arrived.
Kenji wasn't in a rush. It wasn't time yet. Darkrai only became active at night.
He climbed the clock tower. From the top, he had a clear panoramic view of the entire White Moon Lake.
"It's beautiful," Kenji praised sincerely. No wonder this place became a tourist hotspot.
After admiring the view, Kenji returned to the Pokémon Center.
There was still time before nightfall, so Kenji lay down on his bed, intending to take a nap.
He was actually quite curious about what kind of nightmare Darkrai would give him.
Kenji usually had good sleep quality. Within five minutes, his consciousness began to blur as he drifted off.
"GASPP!!! —"
Just thirty minutes later, Kenji shot up from the bed like a spring, his body rigid.
He sat there, gasping for air, looking shaken to his core.
In his dream, he woke up to find that everything he had experienced was just a long, vivid dream.
He had simply been in a car accident. There was no transmigration, no Pokémon, no trainer journey.
Beedrill, Gyarados, Ninetales, Electivire, Arbok...
All the people and Pokémon, everything he possessed now, were just bubbles that burst with a touch, leaving nothing behind—not even a trace.
Real. It felt too real...
Kenji slapped his face. It took him a long while to recover from the nightmare. Then, he pinched his thigh hard.
Feeling the sharp, bone-deep pain, Kenji didn't cry out. Instead, he grinned happily.
Thank god. It was just a dream.
Everything he had—his Pokémon, his partners, this world—was real.
Darkrai's nightmares stemmed from the deepest fears within a person's heart.
This fear could be the death of a loved one, a traumatic event from the past, or something else entirely.
For Kenji, his greatest fear was his transmigration.
He was terrified that all of this was just a dream.
Kenji turned to look out the window. The sky was still bright.
Checking the time, only thirty minutes had passed.
Thirty minutes of sleep, and he woke up terrified from a nightmare. With this kind of sleep quality, getting any rest was impossible.
Sleeping for an hour like this was more exhausting than staying awake.
Kenji let out a long breath. Capturing Darkrai and taking it away would be doing a huge favor for Moon Lake Town.
Since he couldn't sleep anymore, Kenji played on his phone for a while. As night approached, he had a simple dinner and then strode out of the Pokémon Center...
