Chapter 43 - The rest of the truth

In the heart of the building, they found a room filled with mirrors. Each mirror showed a different version of them: Lilia strong, afraid, angry, sad… every one of her emotions, every doubt she carried, all of them present. The same was case for Celine. Lilia felt confused, but Celine squeezed her hand and said:

_"Whatever happens… we won't be separated. This gate will not divide us."

Their reflections began to change, as if the city, or rather the remnants of the city, recognized their courage and opened for them a small door illuminated by a faint light, resembling an exit… but not entirely.

The illuminated door was not a door in the usual sense. It had no clear frame, no handle, not even a surface that could be touched. It was more like a slit in the air, as if reality itself had opened slightly and then hesitated.

Lilia stepped forward first. The mirror behind her cracked silently, and the images of the other versions faded one after another, as if they had fulfilled their purpose and were no longer needed.

Celine felt something strange. It was not fear, but the loss of a weight that had rested on her shoulders for a long time. The third consciousness did not appear, did not take form. Only its voice this time, closer… and slower:

_"The crossing is not complete unless the outcome is accepted."

_"What outcome?" Celine asked.

_"That whatever leaves this place… will not return as it entered."

When Lilia placed her foot inside the light, everything changed.

She did not see a city. She did not see mirrors. She saw only a single moment.

A white room. Smaller. Older. A little girl sitting on the floor, her hands pressed over her ears. And Lilia… knew that the girl was herself.

But this time, she did not step away. She did not watch from a distance. Instead, she sat in front of her and said:

_"I'm here."

The little girl raised her head and looked at her other self.

Outside, Celine shouted her name. The light trembled. The doorway began to close.

At that moment, Celine did not think. She rushed in as fast as she could.

At the same time, on the upper floor of the abandoned sanatorium, the screens were coming back to life. Not all at once, but as if the system were reassembling itself after a shock.

The men and women of the organization stood in silence. No one spoke.

The data appearing on the screens were not just numbers, but unfamiliar patterns. Maps that did not resemble maps. Diagrams of consciousness that did not follow ordinary neural logic.

_"The city…" one of them murmured, "the mental city is collapsing."

Their leader replied calmly:

_"No. It is closing."

_"Did we achieve the objective?" It was a heavy question. No one answered immediately.

The man in the black coat exhaled slowly and said:

_"The objective was never control. It was to determine whether consciousness is capable of rewriting itself without collapsing."

A secondary screen lit up. Three overlapping signals. One had begun to stabilize. The second was fluctuating. The third… remained unclassified.

_"What is that third one?… This… is something we did not plan for."

To be continued...
