Chapter 95 - Chapter 94, The Devil Behind the Curtain

The Devil Behind the Curtain

The mansion was quieter than usual. Not the peaceful kind of quiet—but the kind that made everything feel… off. Kazuma sat at the table, staring at a pile of papers he wasn't even reading. Aqua was sprawled across the couch, sighing loudly every few seconds like she was being personally attacked by boredom. Megumin sat by the window, silent, her hat pulled low. And Ruko? He wasn't even in the room. "…This sucks," Aqua groaned. "The party feels empty without Darkness." Kazuma didn't look up. "You were just calling her useless yesterday."

"That's different coming from you since your the one who say it!" Aqua shot back. "She's our useless!" Megumin sighed quietly. "…She didn't look like herself." Kazuma finally leaned back in his chair, rubbing his face. "…Yeah. I noticed." There was a knock at the door. Knock. Knock. Aqua perked up. "Oh! Maybe it's Darkness coming back because she realized life without us is terrible!" Kazuma didn't even move. "Go open it then." Aqua rushed over and flung the door open. Standing there… was a familiar mask. "…Vanir?" Aqua blinked. The devil casually stepped inside like he owned the place. "Good day, foolish mortals. I see despair has already begun settling in this household."

Kazuma groaned. "If you're here to sell something, leave." Vanir chuckled. "On the contrary… I'm here to discuss something far more interesting that you like to hear." Megumin's eyes sharpened. "…What do you want?" Vanir turned his masked gaze toward Kazuma. "…Your Crusader." Silence filled the room. Kazuma frowned. "…What about her?" Vanir clasped his hands behind his back, pacing slowly. "Tell me, Kazuma… did you find it strange?" "…Find what strange?" "That she would willingly throw away everything… without even attempting to rely on you?" Kazuma didn't answer. Because yeah… it was strange. Vanir continued, voice calm and almost amused. "A proud noble. A stubborn crusader. A woman who would rather die than abandon her role…" He stopped. "…And yet she leaves quietly, without a fight." Aqua crossed her arms. "Okay yeah, now that you say it like that, it is weird for you or should I purify you." Megumin narrowed her eyes. "…Get to the point." Vanir's mask tilted slightly.

"…You know the person... Lord Alderp." Kazuma blinked. "…That old creep?" "Yes."

The air shifted slightly. "…In some case, his behavior," Vanir continued, "has become… unnatural." Kazuma sat up a little. "Unnatural how?" Vanir's voice lowered. "…As if something is influencing him." Megumin's grip tightened on her staff. "…What you think it was? A curse or something?" Vanir nodded slowly. "Not just any curse… but one born from a contract." Kazuma's eyes sharpened. "…You mean a devil contract." Vanir chuckled. "Correct indeed. You are quite smart." Aqua immediately pointed at him. "HEY! Don't lump all devils together! You're shady, but not that shady!" "I will take that as a compliment." Kazuma leaned forward. "…So you're saying Alderp made a deal with a devil?" "Yes." "…And Darkness is caught up in that kind of act?" Vanir's mask seemed to smile. "More than you realize." Silence. "…Explain," Kazuma said. Vanir folded his arms. "Lord Alderp has entered into a contract with a Duke of Hell… a being known as Maxwell." Megumin's eyes widened slightly. "…A Duke of Hell?"

Kazuma's frowned. "That sounds like a big deal. Out of my day check." "It is," Vanir replied calmly. "Maxwell specializes in twisting fate through despair." Aqua shivered. "Okay, I don't like that." Kazuma's voice lowered. "…What did Alderp wish for?" Vanir answered without hesitation. "Control." The room went still. "Control over outcomes… over people… over situations that would otherwise not go in his favor." Megumin's voice was quiet. "…You mean it as something to do with Darkness." Vanir nodded. "Correct. The illness of her father. The debt of her family. The sudden pressure that's been put on her…" He paused. "…All engineered." Kazuma's hand clenched.

"…So she's being forced into this." "I do say so." "…And she thinks it's her choice." "Exactly right on the money." Aqua slammed her hands on the table. "That's messed up!" Megumin's eyes darkened. "…She would never accept help if she believed this was her responsibility." Kazuma looked down for a moment. Then sighed. "…That idiot." Vanir chuckled softly. "So… what will you do, Kazuma?" Silence.

Kazuma leaned back, crossing his arms. "…Nothing." Aqua froze. "Huh?!" Megumin blinked. "…What?" Kazuma shrugged. "She told us not to interfere, right?"Aqua stared at him like he just lost his mind. "You're seriously just gonna leave her like that?!" Kazuma closed his eyes. "…Yeah." Megumin stepped forward. "Kazuma, she's being manipulated—" "I know." "…Then why—" "Because she still chose it." That shut the room up. Kazuma opened his eyes again. "…If we go charging in now, she'll just reject us again anyway." Aqua frowned. "…So what, we just sit here?" "…For now," Kazuma said. Vanir watched him silently. "…Interesting," the devil muttered. Megumin didn't look convinced. "…This isn't like you." Kazuma smirked slightly. "…Relax. I didn't say I wouldn't do anything." Aqua tilted her head. "…Then what are you planning?" Kazuma's stood up slowly.

"…I'm just not gonna rush in like an idiot." Vanir chuckled. "Ah… there it is. The scheming mind." Kazuma ignored him. "…If this is about money, power, and contracts…" He cracked his fingers. "…Then I'll just beat him at his own game."

Outside. Ruko sat on a small bench near the mansion, staring at the ground. He already heard everything. Vanir. Maxwell. Alderp. The pieces were coming together. "…Tch." He leaned back slightly, looking up at the sky. "…So that's the play." His eyes narrowed just a bit. "…Using a devil to corner her." For a moment… his expression darkened. Not rage. Not yet. Just… irritation. Footsteps approached from behind. Vanir's voice echoed lightly. "You seem unsurprised by the situation I just mentioned." Ruko didn't look back. "I'm not." "...Not even the slightest." Vanir stood beside him. "…And what will you do?" "…Nothing. Since I won't interfere." Vanir tilted his mask. "…The same answer as Kazuma but little." "Yeah. So." Silence. "…But for a different reason," Ruko added. Vanir waited. Ruko's voice lowered slightly. "…Because if I move now…" He glanced sideways. "…I'll kill him." A small pause. Vanir chuckled. "…How honest."

Ruko looked forward again. "…So I'll wait." "For?" "…The right moment." Vanir's mask seemed to smile wider. "…How very human of you." Ruko didn't respond. Back inside the mansion—Kazuma stood near the door. "…Alright." Aqua blinked. "What now?" Kazuma smirked slightly. "…We prepare." Megumin raised an eyebrow. "…For what?" Kazuma opened the door. "…To go to Darkness's house." Aqua's eyes lit up. "OH! I LIKE THIS PLAN!" Megumin adjusted her hat, a small smile forming. "…Now that sounds like us." Kazuma stepped outside. "…Four days, huh… I wonder what days that'll be!" His eyes sharpened. "…Let's see who wins." And somewhere in the distance—A noble house stood. Quiet. Heavy. Waiting. For a wedding that was never going to go as planned.
