Chapter 1 - Chapter 2 — The Deal

The next morning, Priya stood outside her mother's office, staring at the closed door.

For the first time in years, she wasn't afraid of what waited on the other side.

She knocked.

"Come in."

Her mother didn't look up from the documents on her desk.

"What is it?"

"I want to talk to you."

"About last night?"

"Yes."

Her mother finally looked at her.

Priya took a breath.

"I want to become a chef."

Her mother's expression immediately hardened.

"We've already discussed this."

"No, Mom. You told me what you wanted. You never listened to what I wanted."

Her mother leaned back in her chair.

"Priya, you're my daughter. I'm trying to give you a secure future."

"I know."

"Then why are you throwing it away?"

"I'm not throwing anything away. I'm choosing something I actually love."

For several moments, neither spoke.

Priya continued.

"I know you don't believe in my dream. But please give me one chance to prove that I'm serious."

Her mother sighed.

"You want a chance?"

"Yes."

"Fine."

Priya looked surprised.

"But there will be conditions."

Her mother folded her hands on the desk.

"For the next two months, you will cook for the employees at my office. Lunch, snacks, whatever is required. You will handle everything yourself."

Priya listened carefully.

"After two months, I'll invite some people from the company and a few others. They will taste your food."

"And then?"

"If they genuinely like your cooking, I'll support your decision to become a chef."

Priya's eyes widened.

"And if they don't?"

Her mother's voice became firm.

"Then you stop chasing this dream and come work in my office. No more arguments."

Priya knew exactly what was at stake.

Two months.

One chance.

Her dream against the future her mother had planned for her.

She extended her hand.

"Deal."

Her mother looked at her hand for a moment before shaking it.

"Deal."

For the first time in a long while, Priya walked out of her mother's office smiling.

She immediately called Mina.

Her best friend answered on the second ring.

"Please tell me you didn't get yourself fired from your mother's company."

"I made a deal with her."

"A deal?"

Priya told her everything.

There was silence.

Then Mina shouted through the phone.

"You're actually going to cook for an entire office?"

"For two months."

"Priya, that's insane."

"Maybe."

Mina laughed.

"But I'm proud of you."

Priya smiled.

"Thanks."

After the call ended, Priya's thoughts drifted toward the shore.

And toward the stranger who had changed everything.

Jay.

She wondered if he would be there again.

That evening, she returned to the same bench.

She sat down.

Waited.

Ten minutes passed.

Then twenty.

An hour.

The sky slowly darkened.

But Jay never came.

Priya looked toward the path where he had disappeared the night before.

She didn't even know why she had expected him.

They hadn't exchanged numbers.

They weren't friends.

They were simply two strangers who had happened to meet on a quiet night.

Still, a small part of her had hoped he would return.

She smiled sadly.

"Maybe I'll never see you again, Jay."

The waves answered with silence.

Priya stood up and walked away.

She didn't know it yet, but the next two months were going to change much more than her career.

And somewhere beyond her sight, the thread that had begun at that shore was quietly tightening.
