The next day arrived, and with it, the arrival of Raito Hikari and Tsuki Kuroi. They walked through the school gates like a living paradox—bright sunrise walking side-by-side with deep midnight.
Raito practically bounced with every step, waving enthusiastically at everyone he passed, his energy radiating outward like heatwaves.
"Another beautiful day! New dreams await! And today... we step even further into Rei-san's legacy!"
Tsuki followed close behind, hands stuffed deep into his pockets, his expression as blank and unyielding as ever.
"Please. I am begging you. Do not mention that name again," he muttered under his breath, sounding like a man who had already endured a lifetime of suffering.
As they walked down the hallway, whispers followed them like shadows.
"Look... those are the new transfers..."
"I heard one of them completely lost it in front of UNDEAD yesterday!"
"No way... he actually screamed?"
"I heard it was... romantic."
Tsuki shot a glare so sharp it could have cut glass, wishing he could silence the gossip with sheer willpower alone.
Then—
"Polar Opposites incoming~!"
Subaru Akehoshi popped out from around a corner, striking a dramatic pose, with Hokuto Hidaka and Mao Isara trailing right behind him.
Mao crossed his arms, a teasing smirk playing on his lips.
"So... how does it feel to be internet famous? Your little 'fan moment' has gone semi-viral, you know."
Raito gasped, clutching his chest. "It did WHAT?!"
Hokuto nodded solemnly. "There are already video edits circulating on YumeTube."
"EDITS?!" Raito covered his face in horror, though his voice squeaked out with genuine concern: "A-Are they... well-lit at least?!"
Tsuki groaned loudly, tilting his head back. This school year was going to be unbearable.
And somewhere across the campus...
ACH-OO!
Rei Sakuma sneezed for the fourth time that morning. He didn't even bother wondering who was talking about him anymore. He just accepted his fate.
Despite the chaotic start, the group made it to the Light Music Club room without further incident. Koga Oogami, now standing as the club president, welcomed them with a wide, feral grin. Hinata and Yuta Aoi were right beside him, buzzing with curiosity.
Koga placed a hand firmly on his hip.
"Welcome, new blood! Ready to rock?! We've been waiting for fresh talent to join the pack!"
Raito beamed, soaking up the energy effortlessly.
"Totally! Looking forward to getting in on those good vibes!"
Tsuki, by contrast, gave a lazy half-nod. "Just here for the peace and quiet."
Yuta chuckled, leaning against his keyboard. "Ahh, the serious type. We'll see how long that lasts."
Hinata grinned mischievously. "Yeah! Let's see if we can crack that cool exterior!"
Tsuki merely shrugged, already knowing he could outlast any attempt to annoy him.
Raito, however, bounced eagerly on his heels. "Don't worry guys! The good vibes will win him over eventually! We're called the Light Music Club for a reason, right?"
Tsuki had already retreated to his favorite corner of the room. He pulled on a pair of headphones, effectively tuning out the world, and began scribbling musical notes into his notebook with precise, quiet movements.
Raito peeked over his shoulder curiously. "Whatcha writing?"
"None of your business," Tsuki replied flatly, not looking up.
Hinata leaned in from the side, eyes sparkling. "Ooooh~ Is it a secret masterpiece?"
Before Tsuki could answer, Koga dramatically leapt onto the top of a nearby table—causing everyone to jump.
"SILENCE!" he barked. "I hereby declare today... IMPROV JAM DAY! Newbies must perform something—anything—to prove their worth to the pack!"
Raito gasped, looking thrilled.
Tsuki slowly removed one headphone. "...I already hate this club."
Despite his complaints, the room erupted in cheers. Hinata and Yuta clapped enthusiastically.
"Yeah! Jam session time!"
Raito was already rummaging through his bag for his guitar. "I'll go first! I have something I've been working on!"
"Alright! Show us what you got, Raito!" Hinata called out.
Raito took a deep breath, closing his eyes for a brief moment. When he opened them, they were shining with determination. He struck the strings—
—and the room was filled with a fast-paced, upbeat melody. It was bright, clear, and overflowing with passion. He didn't just play; he lived the music, his movements fluid and natural.
When the final note rang out, the applause was thunderous.
"WOOO! Incredible!" Koga howled, tail wagging furiously. "Truly a performance worthy of a pack leader!"
"You've got serious talent!" Yuta cheered.
"And charisma to burn—way more than your gloomy friend over there," Hinata added with a wink.
Tsuki didn't react, still sitting in his corner, one headphone still on, his expression unreadable.
Koga slammed his hand onto the table. "NOW! It is time for the Shadow Moon Boy to shine!"
All eyes turned to Tsuki.
He slowly removed his headphones completely and gave Koga a flat stare. "...No."
"Come onnnn, Tsuki~!" Raito bounced over, grinning mischievously. "Just one little tune? For me?"
Tsuki exhaled deeply through his nose, looking like he was regretting every life choice that led him here.
"...Fine."
The room went instantly quiet. Tsuki stood up—slow, calm, deliberate—and picked up an acoustic guitar. He didn't smile. He didn't pose.
He simply began to play.
The notes were deep, haunting, and wrapped in melancholy. They drifted through the air like midnight mist—powerful yet controlled, chaotic yet still. It was the sound of the night itself.
Even Raito's jaw dropped, his sparkles freezing mid-air. "Wait... my best friend is actually cool?!"
When the last chord faded, hanging heavy in the air, there were three full seconds of stunned silence.
Then—the room erupted even louder than before. Koga actually bowed low to the ground.
"...We have witnessed greatness beneath the moonlight..."
Tsuki calmly set the guitar down and said nothing.
Hinata wiped fake tears from his eyes. "Dude... I think we just met the new Dark Prince of music..."
Outside the room...
ACH-OO!
Rei sneezed again. This time... he ran.
"Not bad," Tsuki said later, his voice dry as dust as he looked at Raito. It was clearly meant as a compliment.
Raito laughed sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. "Man... You really are unbeatable at everything!"
Koga clapped both of them on the back so hard they nearly stumbled.
"From this day forth—you are officially members of the Light Music Club!" he declared proudly. "May your songs shine like stars—one bright as day... and one dark as night!"
Yuta grinned from behind his keyboard. "Polar Opposites indeed..."
And so, with music filling the air and new bonds beginning to form, their life at Yumenosaki truly began.
Later that day, Tsuki and Raito headed to a private dance practice room.
Raito was humming happily, energy practically sparking off his skin. "Can you believe it? We're actually official members now!"
Tsuki glanced at him sideways. "Calm down. You're going to bounce a hole in the floor, sparkle boy."
"I can't help it!" Raito laughed, spinning around in a quick twirl. "It's my first time being in a proper unit... and with my best friend, too!"
Tsuki rolled his eyes. "We're just dancing. It's not a big deal."
"Just dancing?!" Raito looked mock-offended. "How cruel!"
Tsuki gave a rare, subtle grin. "You'll survive."
They walked over to the stereo. "Right now, we need to focus on choreography... not your hyperactive sparkles," Tsuki said as he scrolled through the tracks.
"Hey! My sparkles are an essential part of my brand!"
"Uh-huh. And they are also the cause of my permanent headache," Tsuki replied smoothly.
The music started—a smooth, rhythmic beat that perfectly blended light and shadow.
Raito moved first, his steps fluid and bright, full of energy and charm, like sunlight dancing on water.
Tsuki followed instantly—a perfect contrast. Calm. Sharp. Every movement controlled and precise, like moonlight cutting through darkness.
They circled each other, never clashing but always connected. Opposites in every way, yet perfectly synchronized. Their expressions told the story too—Raito grinning wide, Tsuki cool and focused.
Midway through, Raito suddenly improvised a high spin, losing his balance for a split second—but Tsuki was there. A swift arm blocked his fall, guiding his momentum, and pushed him into a final pose where they stood facing off—Sun against Moon.
Silence hung for a heartbeat.
Then Raito burst out laughing, panting slightly. "You had to make it dramatic!"
Tsuki stepped back, barely winded. "It's called stage presence."
Unbeknownst to them, Hinata and Yuta had been peeking through the slightly open door. They froze, eyes wide, before slowly backing away down the hall.
"...Whoa," Yuta whispered. "We just saw magic happen."
Hinata nodded seriously. "Polar Opposites isn't just a cute name...
It's real."
As the day grew late, Tsuki wandered the halls alone, seeking silence. The campus was emptying out, the afternoon sun casting long, golden shadows.
He found a bench under a large tree, the shade cool and inviting. He sat down, leaning back with a deep sigh.
Finally. Peace.
He reached for his music player—but froze.
Behind the bench, sprawled across the grass like a discarded doll, was Ritsu Sakuma. He was fast asleep, soft snores puffing out his cheeks, one hand dangling loosely.
Tsuki blinked.
"...Seriously?" he muttered. "Sleeping out in the open like this? What kind of person does that?"
He crouched down slightly, and his eyes caught something—Ritsu was clutching a crumpled photograph. It was an old picture of Rei Sakuma in his uniform, standing proudly in front of the school.
Tsuki's expression softened—just for a fraction of a second—before hardening again.
Without a word, he took off his blazer and gently draped it over Ritsu's shoulders to shield him from the cooling air.
As he turned to leave...
"...Nii-san..." Ritsu mumbled in his sleep.
Tsuki paused, not looking back.
"...Idiot," he whispered quietly, disappearing into the fading light.
Moments later, Mao Isara arrived, sighing as he looked at his sleeping friend.
"He overdid it again," Mao muttered, crouching down to shake Ritsu awake. "Hey. Wake up, sleepyhead."
Ritsu groaned, blinking blearily. "...Mngh...?"
"You gotta stop sleeping out here like a stray cat," Mao chided gently, helping him up. "You'll catch a cold."
Ritsu stretched, then paused. He looked down at the blazer covering him.
"Huh?...Where did this come from?"
Mao looked at the name tag. "Oh? Isn't this Tsuki Kuroi's?"
Ritsu's eyes widened. He clutched the fabric slightly tighter. "...He put this on me?"
"Looks like it," Mao chuckled. "Guess our 'cool' transfer student has a soft side after all. Saw you sleeping here and covered you up."
Ritsu looked down at the name tag, a small, sleepy smile forming on his lips.
The next morning, Tsuki arrived at school without his blazer. He didn't seem to mind the chill, walking with his hands in his pockets.
Of course, he was spotted immediately.
Kaoru Hakaze was lounging against the entrance wall. He raised an eyebrow as Tsuki approached.
"Missing something?"
Kaoru pushed off the wall, standing in front of him with that signature lazy smirk. "Forgot your jacket? You look cold."
Tsuki gave him a dry look. "Didn't forget. Just left it."
Kaoru chuckled. "Voluntarily freezing? Interesting way to maintain your 'cool' image."
Tsuki narrowed his eyes. "...Why is a graduated student still loitering around like a stray cat?"
"Ouch," Kaoru laughed, unaffected. "Some of us miss the view. And the chaos. Besides... Koga refuses to run the club without me 'supervising'. So I'm basically permanent staff now."
Tsuki ignored the teasing. "...Is Rei Sakuma here?"
His voice was wary. Kaoru's expression shifted slightly, becoming a little more serious.
"...He is around. Why do you ask?"
"TSUKI~! THERE YOU ARE!"
Raito came running, launching himself onto Tsuki's back like a missile made of glitter.
Tsuki stumbled, grabbing Raito's arms to keep him from falling. "Get. Off."
"Nope!" Raito grinned, clinging on like a koala. "You skipped breakfast and didn't eat lunch yesterday! You're gonna fade away into nothingness!" He looked at Kaoru dramatically. "Sir! Please help me save my friend from self-imposed starvation!"
Kaoru raised his hands in surrender, laughing. "Oh no. I am not getting involved in your domestic disputes."
Tsuki groaned, trying to pry Raito off.
Then—
"...Is that really how Polar Opposites behave?"
A calm, smooth voice cut through the noise.
Everyone turned. Standing at the end of the hall was Rei Sakuma, bag slung over one shoulder, looking as mysterious and unreadable as ever.
The hallway went silent.
Raito froze. Tsuki stiffened. Even Kaoru looked mildly surprised.
Slowly, carefully, Raito slid off Tsuki's back. He turned to face Rei... and bowed so deeply his forehead nearly touched the floor.
"SENPAI!!! I AM NOT WORTHY OF YOUR GLORIOUS PRESENCE!!!"
Rei closed his eyes, taking a deep, soul-weary breath. He said nothing... he just sighed—a sigh that carried the weight of knowing this year would never be peaceful again.
Somewhere far away...
ACH-OO!
"A NEW ERA BEGINS!!" Koga's voice echoed.
Adonis Otogari simply walked faster, hoping to avoid being dragged into the madness.
Kaoru looked between the stoic Tsuki and the vibrating ball of energy that was Raito, and grinned.
"So that's why you were so wary," he nudged Tsuki. "You're not just guarding him... you're protecting the world from him."
Tsuki gave him a look that said 'you have no idea'.
Rei walked past them calmly, pretending not to hear. Raito was whispering frantically to himself: "He walked next to me... same air... should I faint? Is fanning appropriate?"
Tsuki exhaled deeply. "...I know."
Just as they turned the corner, they ran into Mao and Ritsu. Ritsu was leaning heavily on Mao, looking half-asleep again.
"I'm tired..." Ritsu groaned.
"You slept all day yesterday," Mao replied exasperatedly. "One of these days you're going to collapse."
They stopped when they saw the group.
"Well, this is a coincidence," Mao said.
Kaoru smirked. "Speak of the devil, it's the Sleepy Prince and his caretaker."
"More like a natural disaster and his babysitter," Mao retorted.
Suddenly, Ritsu's eyes snapped open. He remembered.
The bench. The tree. The jacket.
He looked straight at Tsuki, clutching his bag tightly. He took a breath, looking like he was about to say something profound—
"THANK YOU FOR THE BLAZER!"
He bowed so fast he nearly head-butted Mao.
Tsuki froze, eyes widening slightly before he looked away, flustered. "I-it was cold," he mumbled gruffly.
Kaoru's grin widened. "Ohhh? Doing good deeds now?"
Rei watched with a calm, knowing look.
"TSUKI?! YOU DID A NICE THING AND KEPT IT SECRET?!" Raito gasped, clutching his chest. "I'm so proud... but also betrayed!"
"It was just a jacket!" Tsuki growled, looking like a cornered animal.
Ritsu stood up straight, smiling sleepily but warmly. He carefully folded the blazer and held it out like a precious gift.
"...Here. It kept me warm. Thank you."
For a moment, even Kaoru stopped teasing. Tsuki reached out slowly and took it back.
Before turning away, he gave Ritsu a tiny, almost invisible nod.
"...Next time, keep your phone on before you pass out in a stupid place."
Ritsu blinked... then smiled brighter than the sun.
In that moment, something shifted in the atmosphere of Yumenosaki Academy. Even the moon casts light when it chooses to shine—and sometimes, it starts by giving warmth no one expected.
The school bell rang, breaking the spell.
"Come on," Tsuki grabbed Raito's arm, dragging him away.
"Hey! Where are we going?!"
"Class," Tsuki replied bluntly. "You insisted we take the same classes. Now deal with it."
Mao fell into step beside them. "I'm in your class too. Seat's right behind you. I'm already preparing for the chaos."
"I bring positive energy!" Raito declared.
"You bring noise," Tsuki corrected.
As they walked toward the classroom, Rei watched them go, a small, faint smile touching his lips before he vanished down the opposite hallway like a shadow fading into the light.
Meanwhile, atop the school roof, Koga stood with arms spread wide against the wind.
"THE FLAMES OF YOUTH BURN BRIGHT! THE LEGACY OF UNDEAD LIVES ON IN THE NEW GENERATION!"
Adonis, standing calmly below him, took a sip from his drink.
"...Can we go home now?"
The school day passed in a whirlwind of noise and energy. Raito chattered endlessly, Mao offered dry commentary from behind them, and Tsuki did his best to ignore it all while secretly making sure Raito didn't wander off and get lost.
By lunchtime, the three of them had claimed their spot on the rooftop. Tsuki immediately retreated to his favorite quiet corner, while Raito flopped down beside him like an excited puppy.
"We made it! Our first full morning as official students of Yumenosaki!"
Mao sat cross-legged opposite them, unwrapping his bento. "You say that like you've been waiting your whole life."
"I have!" Raito beamed, turning to Tsuki. "Right? Isn't this just amazing?"
Tsuki took a slow, deliberate bite of his sandwich. He chewed thoughtfully, then looked at Raito.
"...It's... not terrible."
Raito pumped his fist in victory, vibrating with happiness.
Mao chuckled, shaking his head as he took a sip of water. "...You're really easy to please, you know that?"
"I prefer to look at the bright side!" Raito shrugged, leaning back on his hands. "Life's too short to be gloomy all the time!"
Tsuki raised an eyebrow. "...Strange philosophy coming from someone whose emotions change faster than the weather."
"Hey! I prefer the term 'passionate'!" Raito argued playfully.
"No," Tsuki deadpanned. "I'm pretty sure 'emotional rollercoaster' is the correct term."
"Rude!" Raito laughed, shoving him lightly.
Tsuki glanced at Mao. "Aren't you going to eat with the rest of Trickstar?"
Mao sighed, leaning back. "They're all over the place today. Ritsu is asleep under a tree somewhere, Hokuto is running around yelling at people for touching his stuff... and Subaru? Who knows." He smirked. "Last I heard, he was doing interpretive dance in the hallway."
"THAT'S ART!" Raito declared enthusiastically.
Tsuki blinked slowly. "...Your unit is terrifying."
The bell rang, signaling the end of lunch.
Tsuki and Raito made their way to the Light Music Club room. Raito was practically bouncing off the walls with anticipation.
"Our second session! This is going to be great!"
"Just try not to embarrass us," Tsuki muttered, hands in his pockets.
Raito threw the doors open dramatically. "WE HAVE RETURNED, MY PEOPLE!"
Hinata and Yuta Aoi turned instantly, grinning widely.
"Oho! The Sun and Moon have returned!" Hinata cheered.
Yuta strummed a dramatic chord on his guitar. "And so, the next chapter of musical chaos begins."
Koga Oogami was standing proudly atop the sound desk, looking like a king on his throne.
"NEWBIES! Welcome to your second day of service under my glorious rule!"
Raito struck a pose immediately. "We are ready and willing to serve!"
Tsuki sighed deeply, already feeling his patience slipping away. He turned toward his usual corner—his sanctuary of silence—only to stop dead in his tracks.
Someone was already there.
Rei Sakuma stood in the spot of sunlight, quietly tuning an old acoustic guitar. He looked calm, ethereal, and completely unbothered.
Tsuki's eyes narrowed. "...That is my spot."
Rei didn't look up. His fingers continued to pluck at the strings.
"...It is not marked with your name."
Tsuki flinched. Beside him, Raito looked like he was about to have a heart attack. His hands clutched his chest, eyes wide and watery.
"NOOOOOO!" Raito wailed at the top of his lungs. "Tsuki... you have been usurped! The sacred shadow corner... claimed by the King of Night himself!"
He dramatically dropped to his knees. "The moon has nowhere left to go! Celestial balance is destroyed!"
"It's true!" Hinata gasped, joining in the theatrics. "Without their territory, will the duo fall apart?!"
"Will harmony crumble?!" Yuta added.
Koga slammed his fist onto the desk. "THIS MATTER CANNOT BE SETTLED WITH WORDS ALONE!"
Rei finally looked up. His gaze was calm, stoic, and piercing. He looked directly at Tsuki.
"...If you want it back..." he said softly, his voice carrying across the room.
"...Play for it."
Silence fell instantly.
Tsuki's expression hardened. A sharp, challenging glint appeared in his eyes.
Challenge accepted.
Raito sprang to his feet, eyes blazing. "LET THE DUEL BEGIN! LIGHT VERSUS SHADOW! THE ULTIMATE BATTLE OF SOULS!!"
Mao Isara appeared in the doorway just then, a can of soda in hand. He took one look at the scene and sighed deeply into the chaos.
"...And so it begins."
Tsuki crossed his arms, staring Rei down without fear.
"What kind of trial?"
Everyone held their breath. Mao took a slow sip of his soda, leaning against the wall to watch the show.
Rei held his guitar comfortably, his expression unreadable.
"...A Song-Battle," he announced. "Winner claims the corner."
Raito grinned, hyped up. "A musical showdown! You really know how to make things interesting, Sakuma-senpai!"
"The stage is set..." Hinata whispered excitedly.
"The gauntlet has been thrown..." Yuta strummed a tense chord.
Koga smirked from his high perch. "May the best musician win... or perhaps, the one who plays the quietest."
"You go first," Tsuki said boldly, his voice cutting through the air. "Self-proclaimed vampire."
The room gasped. Even Mao looked surprised by his audacity.
Rei merely raised an eyebrow, a flicker of amusement passing through his eyes.
"Very well."
He stepped forward. The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. It felt heavier, deeper, like night falling over the earth.
Rei placed his fingers on the strings.
And he began to play.
The notes that flowed out were soft, yet haunting. They sounded like wind whispering through ancient trees, like the quiet sadness of midnight. It was simple, yet overwhelmingly beautiful. Every note seemed to carry centuries of history.
The entire club was mesmerized. Hinata and Yuta stopped moving entirely, captivated by the melody.
But Tsuki stood perfectly still. He didn't look away. His eyes were locked onto Rei's hands, his face intense, as if he were analyzing every single vibration, searching for the truth hidden beneath the sound...
To be continued...
