My muscles tighten and lock in place the minute those words escape Reika's mouth. Apparently she has been saving that bit of information to tell us all at the same time. Chaos magic is raw undefined magic, uncontrollable. Anyone who accesses it easily becomes the most powerful magical being. Even more powerful than Psythelians, and the thought of that alone is enough to send blood-curdling chills down my spine. But just like everything, it has its bad side, it easily corrupts the user, it could kill you if you are a naive wielder as well and the list goes on and on.
"So you think your mother was one of them? Or did she happen to find out and then she was assassinated." I ask and all eyes land on me questioningly. I understand that that was a reach but surely after the recently discovered facts we know it was a setup. Someone knew I was going to be there and they needed to have me eavesdrop on that conversation.
"Come on man..." Garth starts but then Cal cuts him off. "I mean he does have a point though, he said that he believes three of them were corrupted. who's to say your mother was not one of them?" She queries and the group is befallen by a silence embalmed with questions. Reika's jaw clenches and her eyes widen with apprehension.
"Why would she feel the need to do Chaos magic when she was already the most powerful being in the magical world." she asks more to herself than to us. "Well you did say that she told you she had six months left to live so...could it be....." Caden starts and Garth finishes "That that was one of the side-effects of using Chaos magic." he says as the damning realization hits us all.
"Well that's utterly confusing since she was already the most powerful being in the magic world." I add on. Reika's eyes suddenly light up as if the answers have dawned on her from the heavens. "No, she was on the good side, they just needed to take her out first." She says in a matter of factly tone. I know she's about to spew some ground-breaking information, and its moments like this that make me fall for her even more. She's so damn intelligent.
"When I emerged as a Psythelian and started my training early, there's things they tell you about the type of power you posses," she begins and all of us are practically on the edge of the couch with apprehension. "For Psythelians, they told me that one day, I will be the most powerful, assuming that I outlive my mother of course. So when that time comes, and I become a sage, the universe...sort of....aligns with me...and I'll be gifted with premonition as well." She explains slowly.
"Why you may ask, well it's because for one. The most powerful being is expected to keep a balance in the universe, and hence the gift of premonition is aided to them, to help them always restore that balance."
"Okay, so the gift of premonition is what made her know that three of the other sages are corrupted." Cal chimes in.
"Bingo." Reika agrees and we all sit with this information for a while.
"But then how did she know she was going to die within six moths. There's something we're not getting here." I say more to myself than to them but this does evoke apprehension within them. "Was the power of premonition that she had enough to show her that as well?" Garth asks, his eyes attentive and searching with a trail of thought I also started seeing. "Hmmm. I suppose not given that the premonition is mostly used to restore balance and not for personal predictions." Reika mumbles this with a nod that lets us know she's also picking up what he's putting down.
"Which means." Garth encourages enthusiastically.
"That someone else had let her know that she was going to die within those six moths." I add as the profound realization hits us all like a wrecking-ball.
"Well that's just a...." Cal begins but we are quickly interrupted by a loud siren blaring and my heart skips a mighty beat. Fucking hell. Reid. Reika calls out to me telepathically and her eyes find mine amongst the pandemonium that's breaking out. It means something seriously bad has occurred love. I tell her as Caden lets the illusion and the silencing spell fall and we're now aware of all the witches and mages filling into the common room at an alarming pace. We're all soon surrounded by agents who are also confused and as clueless as we are all a mass of black and silver training gear.
Warden walks in first and the noise immediately dies down to a pin drop silence, his revered and redoubtable energy befalling the atmosphere. Telena follows and Teiris in seconds later and walking in last is my father. The energy in the room is literally palpable ebbing with curiosity and fear. Or at least that's what I feel from people when I channel Reika's empathy. It's only on rare occasions that the four most powerful mages of Meridian decide to shower us with their presence, and it's never good.
The four take their position in the center of the room, their faces painted in staid demeanor. "We have lost one of our own." Warden announces loud enough for the room to hear.
"And another has also been found dead." My father adds. "Now this is not exactly an attack on us but we do have reason to believe that its tied to....well.... some current underlying issue that is above your clearance." He announces.
"Now sadly, both victims are Vatics, one a Meridian agent, and one from TCS." Teiris says in a stony tone, which is also somewhat detached and hollow as well. Just like that, I know. The victim we lost is Teiris' sister.
"Cause of death?" Reika asks loud enough for the room to hear as well. All eyes then switch to her but she doesn't succumb to their probing stares. She has come to be quickly feared and respected here which is insane, not the part where they respect her, everyone should respect my fierce lovely Reika, she's formidable. The fear part, is always inevitable where Reika is concerned.
"Assassination." Telena answers her question and a few agents gasp. It's rare to hear of Vatics being assassinated, especially because their power is literally full on precognition. It's difficult to execute that level of murder, and that alone tells me there's underlying sinister forces at play.
