**Chapter 48**
**Cossette's POV**
My head hurt so much.
The kind of pain that exists before you fully understand where you are or what happened - dull and heavy and pressing in from every direction. I opened my eyes slowly.
And saw -
Betha.
Asleep beside me. In my bed. Her dark brown hair loose, her cheek pressed against the pillow approximately four centimeters from my face, her breathing the slow even rhythm of someone who had cried themselves into exhaustion and then refused to leave.
I turned my head the other way.
Ray.
In the chair beside the bed, his upper body slumped forward, one hand still wrapped around mine where he had apparently fallen asleep holding it, his head resting on his other arm against the mattress edge. His hair was out of place for the first time since I had known him. His charcoal suit jacket was gone.
I lay there for a moment.
*What happened.*
It wasn't a question. It was the beginning of memory returning - slow at first, then all at once. The gala. The dance. The dance floor. Standing alone. Looking up.
The sound.
*Foxy... you're okay.*
"Alaric," I said.
My voice came out barely above a whisper but it was enough.
Betha jolted awake beside me with the specific violence of someone whose body had been waiting for any signal to surface. Her eyes found mine before she had fully processed being conscious and then she made a sound - something between a sob and a laugh - and wrapped her arms around me so completely that I was fairly certain my soul nearly left my body for the second time.
"Cossette - oh my God - Cossette -"
"Betha I can't breathe -"
She held on for approximately three more seconds before releasing me, and by that point Ray was awake too - upright, fully alert in the sudden way of someone who had trained himself to surface quickly, his eyes finding my face with an immediacy that had nothing careful about it.
He reached up and held my face in both hands.
"Thank God," he said quietly. Just that. His thumbs were careful against my cheekbones. "Thank God you're okay, little thing."
"I'm okay," I said.
He exhaled.
Betha was still crying quietly beside me, the dignified contained version she deployed when she had decided she was done with the undignified version but her face hadn't received the memo yet.
I sat up slowly.
They had changed my clothes - I was in a hospital pajama, pale blue and entirely without glamour, which was considerably better than a torn forest green gala gown for this particular situation. Even Betha, I noticed, was wearing one. Someone had apparently found her one too, which meant she had been here long enough that a gala dress had become genuinely impractical.
I looked at them both.
Then I said: "Where is Alaric?"
Betha's expression shifted. "Operating room."
The word landed in my chest like something physical.
Tears came before I had decided to cry - slow and quiet, rolling down my face without drama, without sound. I looked at my hands in my lap.
"All of this because of me," I said.
"No." Ray moved immediately - off the chair and in front of me, his hands on my arms, his voice firm in a way that left no room for argument. "It is not because of you. I was the one who asked you to dance. I was the one who led you out there and left you standing in the middle of that floor. If it's anyone's fault it's -"
"Ray." I put my hand over his. "Stop. It is not your fault either. Stop saying that."
He looked at me.
I held his gaze until he nodded - reluctant and unconvinced but willing to let it go for now.
I turned to Betha.
"Take me to Alaric."
---
The three of us walked to the surgical wing together - me in hospital pajamas, Ray in a ruined gala suit, Betha in hospital pajamas with the particular energy of someone who had decided that dignity was a resource to be conserved for later.
The waiting room outside Alaric's operating theater was fuller than I expected.
Alex first - he saw me the moment we came through the doors, stood up from his plastic chair, and crossed to me with the directness of someone who had been waiting for this specific moment.
"You're okay," he said. Not a question. Just confirmation of something he needed confirmed.
"I'm okay," I said.
Emily appeared behind him, her smile genuine and warm and slightly relieved. "I'm so happy you're okay, Cossette."
Nathalie was further back. She looked at me and gave a small, tight smile - controlled, contained, the smile of someone managing several things simultaneously and not entirely succeeding.
I nodded back at her.
And then I saw them.
Two people I didn't recognize, standing slightly apart from the others with the particular quality of people who had traveled a long distance recently and were still carrying it in their posture.
The woman first - and I understood immediately when I looked at her. Something in the jaw. The line of the shoulders. The eyes, though hers were softer than his, carrying warmth where his carried storm.
The man beside her was the opposite - tall, rigid, with the kind of face that had made decisions about the world and expected the world to have the decency to agree.
They moved toward me at the same moment.
The woman smiled first - small and genuine. "I'm Emma Veynor. Alaric's mother."
"I'm ...," I said. "I'm co -"
"And you," the man said, his voice cutting clean across mine, cold and precise, "must be Cossette. The one who almost killed our son."
The waiting room went very quiet.
I froze completely.
Emma turned to him immediately. "Victor -"
"I'm simply stating what happened, Emma." His voice didn't rise. Didn't need to. "Our son, who we haven't seen in months, is currently in an operating room because of a situation involving this woman. I think that's worth acknowledging."
Emma placed her hand on his arm. "It is not her fault, Victor. And you should be proud of your son - he is a true gentleman." She paused, then looked at me with that warm softness that was everything her husband's gaze was not, and added simply: "And I can understand completely why he helped her. She's gorgeous."
I felt the heat rise to my face immediately and completely against my will.
I turned instinctively - and found both Betha and Ray standing in absolute silence behind me, watching this unfold with the expressions of people witnessing something they have no framework for and have decided the best response is perfect stillness.
Victor made a sound that was not quite a laugh.
"Gorgeous," he repeated, the word landing flat. "What use is gorgeous. There are plenty of gorgeous women in this country." His eyes moved briefly to Nathalie across the room. "What will he do with gorgeous when he is in an operating room."
He turned away, his hand finding Emma's elbow.
"Come, Emma. Let's sit and wait for our son that we haven't seen in months and when we finally see him a woman has nearly gotten him killed. Remarkable."
They moved back toward the chairs.
I lowered my face.
Betha appeared at my side in approximately one second, her voice dropping to a whisper directly at my ear.
"If he wasn't Alaric's father I would -" she began.
"Betha," I said quietly.
"I'm just saying -"
"Don't."
She made a sound that indicated she was not done but was choosing to pause.
I looked at my hands.
"He has every right to be angry," I said. My voice came out very even. "His son is in an operating room right now. And it is because of me. Whatever he wants to say - he can say it."
Betha opened her mouth.
I looked at her.
She closed it.
I looked at the operating room door.
*Stay,* I thought, the same word I had said on the floor of the gala with my hand pressed against his jaw and crystal dust settling around us like snow.
*Alaric. Stay.*
That was when the operating room door opened.
