Chapter 36 - Lacking patience

A small, slender figure stood with her hands clasped delicately in front of her, the silence of the grand hall softened by the gentle, melodic tune she hummed in perpetual service to her Diamond.

The hall was an architectural marvel of crystalline engineering. Walls of translucent sapphire and deep indigo rose toward a vaulted ceiling, laced with intricate, glowing lines. To a casual observer, they might have looked like fractures, but as the shifting light of Homeworld's suns touched them, they revealed themselves to be masterfully etched silhouettes of various Gem cuts, shimmering with an ethereal bioluminescence.

The stillness was punctuated only by the Pearl's haunting song and the rhythmic, heavy splashes of liquid. In the center of the room, a massive, diamond-shaped pool collected the essence being generated—As Blue and Yellow have redoubled the production to compensate for what was used.

The Pearl's song stopped as a gargantuan form began to rise from the pool. The essence, now at its peak volume, began to hiss as it was siphoned away through glass conduits for storage. As the liquid receded, the figure descended with a heavy, regal grace.

Blue Diamond was a vision of sorrowful majesty. Similar to Pink in the way perfection was flawless and simply perfect yet she lacked the youngest Diamond's erratic, joyful energy. Her skin was a uniform, matte shade of pale blue. Her hair, a thick, cowl-like mane the color of winter frost, framed a face of profound solemnity. Beneath heavy, hooded lids, her eyes held a galaxy of understanding, centered by diamond-shaped pupils that possessed the weight of absolute authority—a gaze that could make a lesser being crumble into stasis.

Cloaked in long, flowing robes that pooled around her feet, she turned her head slowly toward her servant. Her voice was a low, resonant chime.

"Pearl?" she began. "Has the needed amount of Diamond essence been met for this day, Pearl?"

Snapping into a crisp, diamond-shaped salute, Blue Pearl spoke. Her voice was timid and airy, yet it vibrated with a lifetime of unwavering loyalty. "Yes, my Diamond."

Blue Diamond lowered herself slowly to her knees, her massive scale making the movement feel like a mountain shifting. She extended a hand, palm upward, allowing her tiny Pearl to step onto her palm. "I see... That is good." Her expression drifted, lost in thought. "How have the new Gems of Yellow's been incubating? Anything that is of interest?"

"The process is going as projected, yet... a mutation has appeared," Pearl reported. "It is currently being tested so that the decision can be made about its fate."

A gentle, weary frown creased Blue Diamond's features. The thought that her and Yellow's combined essence had produced an unknown variable troubled her. "A mutation... Is it wrong-colored? To think that after spending such huge amounts of essence, that a terrible Gem would actually be formed?"

"Not exactly, my Diamond," Pearl clarified quickly. "The mutation seems to be showing promise. Yellow Diamond seems very likely to deem it useful enough to keep."

"Oh... I see. It is that kind of mutation," Blue sighed, the tension leaving her shoulders. "Then my worries have been for naught. It is good to see that Pink has been lucky. Anything from White?"

The atmosphere grew heavy as Blue Diamond began the long walk toward the command center. "The following talk was silent as Blue Diamond made her way to the command center. Yellow and White still refuse to allow me a direct meeting with Pink... The unfairness of it all."

"No, my Diamond," Pearl answered softly. "Although White Diamond's Pearl has informed us that White already knew of this... project. She had prepared her own gift to Pink Diamond long ago."

"I see... White is always a few steps ahead of me and Yellow."

They reached the massive doors of the inner sanctum, crafted from solid blue quartz. Two towering Amethysts stood guard, snapping to attention and saluting as the doors ground open. As they entered the vast, lonely space of the throne room, Pearl dared a small question. "Have you expected that White Diamond would not be angry, my Diamond? Is that why you agreed to help?"

A faint, ghost of a smile touched Blue Diamond's lips. "No, Pearl... I didn't know such a thing. But as much as others like to believe otherwise, or as much as it seems difficult to guess... White isn't unreasonable. And if I were to say a Diamond that White is most flexible with... it is Pink."

She paused, looking out over the spires of Homeworld. "White may not act like it... But White loves us, especially Pink, even if they both don't see it sometimes. It is simply White that wishes and expects perfection from Pink, and yet... she was always there to see her progress. Even now, White may insist that she is letting Pink grow on her own... But I am willing to bet that she would intervene the moment Pink was in any danger."

"She wants Pink to take care of herself, but at the same time... she wants Pink to still be that small Diamond that followed us around all the time." The smile vanished, replaced by a deep, aching frown as she reached her throne and took her seat.

"Yellow and White both want Pink to grow... To prove herself. I just wish that they would understand that you can't force such a thing." Blue's voice trailed off into a hollow echo. "We could have been together now if not for... Sigh... Pink can have all the time to grow under us. Safe and close. Knowing that White is watching over her eases my worries, but not by much."

"You miss her, my Diamond," Pearl whispered.

"Yes, Pearl... I do. Which is why I have already decided about the signal orb. Not even you will talk me out of it, Pearl."

Pearl went stiff, her form flickering for a fraction of a second. "My Diamond... You have already tested White Diamond patience once. Are you sure this is wise to do so again so soon? She would not be as entertaining to the idea."

Blue Diamond remained silent for a long while. She raised her hand, and four orbs of blue light manifested, swirling in the air. They shifted and took the shapes of the four Diamonds. Finally, a small, vibrant figure formed in the center of her palm, surrounded by the constructs of White, Yellow, and Blue.

"I have regretted this for a very long time, Pearl," Blue Diamond murmured, her voice breaking. "I may seem that I am making this decision lightly, but no... I am simply making sure that I don't regret it again."

Pearl felt tears drop as she sighed heavily in her small gem knowing that her Diamond was crying..again "Sniff... My Diamond, the consequences..."

Huge, luminous teardrops began to fall, splashing like heavy rain against the throne. In her palm, the small light-construct of Pink Diamond began to move—jumping and spinning with the frantic, demanding energy of a child seeking attention.

"Yellow does not intend to go herself she intends to send those new gems with few from her court... Or more accurately, Yellow understands that White would never allow this... not yet. And I am not going either. But I will not sit and wait... not this time."

Blue Diamond looked down at the dancing light, her expression one of agonizing love. "It is fine, Pearl... No matter the consequences of my choice, it will be far better than the feeling of my Gem cracking from the inside for the last few centuries. What was the term that organics used? Oh, right... It would be far less painful."

Pearl looked at her Diamond's grieving face and knew there was no path back. "Yes, my Diamond."
