Chapter 292 - Chapter 292

Natasha doesn't lower her weapon. Her weight doesn't shift. The cut on her forearm has stopped bleeding, but the bruises on her ribs throb with every breath, and her knuckles are raw from the warehouse drones. She took calculated hits back there from something that learned her patterns. This suit stands eight feet of gunmetal and carbon fiber, an arc reactor burning brighter than Stark's, and it hasn't moved an inch.

"Step out of the suit."

Her voice stays flat, level, the voice she uses on men who think size wins arguments. "You're coming with me."

The faceplate's red slit reflects her own stance back at her. No movement. No sound. Then a low chuckle vibrates through the room, distorted by the helmet's speakers.

"One woman."

The voice is male, heavily accented, amused. "No armor. No backup. Just a gun and a badge."

The suit's head tilts.

"Ivan Vanko does not know your name. He does not need to. He built this to kill gods. You are not a god."

The arc reactor flares, blue-white light washing the walls. The whips at the suit's hips uncoil with a sound like cracking cable, energy crawling along their length. The shoulders roll in a fluid motion that belongs on something half the suit's size, and that's the detail that sticks with her, not the whips, not the light. Something built like a tank shouldn't move like a dancer.

She moves before the whips snap forward, throwing herself sideways behind a gantry crane's support strut, rolling toward a workbench stacked with reactor casings. Metal screams as the whips shear through the space she just occupied. Trenches gouge into the concrete behind her. She comes up behind a half-assembled drone chassis, eyes tracking the suit's torso through the gaps in the machinery.

One deliberate step at a time, the suit advances, refusing to chase blind, whips weaving a defensive perimeter, sensors scanning the floor. When she darts to a storage rack, the head tracks her instantly. When she feints left and breaks right, the whips adjust mid swing to cut off the angle before she's fully committed to it.

It's learning, the same way the drones did, only faster now, sharper.

Whether Vanko is watching through the suit's sensors from somewhere deeper in the facility or riding the controls himself, someone is reacting to her in real time, correcting half a beat faster than the drones ever reacted.

She throws a combat knife at the joint in the suit's elbow. The blade embeds clean in the carbon fiber seam. The suit doesn't flinch. The whip on that side lashes out blind, forcing her back behind a coolant tank. She fires two rounds into the reactor housing's lower vent. Sparks shower down. The suit's step falters, then resumes.

Nothing slows it, not the knife, not the bullets, not the hits she landed clean.

This isn't the drone fight.

She dismantled eight of those in the warehouse. This suit is absorbing punishment that would have dropped a Mark V, and it keeps coming.

"Natasha."

Pepper's voice cuts into her earpiece, tight and fast. "Tony's airborne, two minutes out. Rhodey's securing the Expo perimeter. Coulson's team is five minutes behind him. Whatever's in there with you, don't wait for us if you don't have to."

"Copy."

The word costs her a half second of focus. The suit takes it.

One whip feints high. She ducks. The other comes in low, catching her across the shins. Her legs go out from under her. She hits the floor hard, ribs screaming. She rolls through it anyway. The suit closes the distance before she can get her feet back under her. A metal boot slams down where her throat had been a heartbeat earlier. She twists clear, comes up swinging, the knife driving for the neck joint.

The suit catches her wrist. The grip crushes bone. Driving her free hand into the elbow joint, she sinks the knife deep, and the suit's other hand backhands her across the face. She tastes blood. Her back slams into a support column, and her vision grays at the edges.

The suit looms over her, whips raised for the finish.

"Widow!"

A repulsor blast catches the suit square in the chest plate, driving it back three steps, whips flaring wild. Tony lands in a crouch beside her, Mark V humming, faceplate retracted. His eyes flick over her split lip, the blood at her temple, the way she's favoring her left side, and his hand hesitates over the console a beat too long before the joke comes out anyway.

"Still with me?"

"Barely." She drags herself up against the column. "Whatever's in that suit, it learns faster than the drones did. Watch yourself."

His repulsors whine, charging. "Noted."

The Whiplash suit's head snaps toward Tony. The arc reactor's pulse steadies. For the first time since the warehouse, Vanko isn't reacting anymore. He's calculating. Two targets, two different threat profiles, and the tactical display in his helmet cycles through engagement protocols, discarding the single-combat routine he ran on Natasha alone.

A flicker crawls across the reactor's blue-white glow, barely perceptible. The left shoulder joint hesitates, a microsecond lag when the whip retracts. Tony's blast cracked something in the heat dissipation lattice, and the sustained output is already eating into what's left of the cooling cycle.

It isn't critical, not yet, but Vanko feels it, and that flicker decides him more than the two targets ever could. A suit running hot with a compromised heat sink can't afford a war of attrition against both of them.

He doesn't curse or posture. The whips coil back into their housings, fast and tight. The reactor dips to a lower output setting, conserving what's left. A tactical withdrawal, not a retreat.

"Protocol Zvezda."

The command carries over the suit's internal comms, and dormant drones drop from ceiling racks across the facility, six or seven of them, older models stripped for parts, their targeting systems still functional. They launch in unison, converging on the two armored figures from three vectors.

Tony's faceplate snaps down. "Really? More tin cans?"

"Stark." Natasha is already moving, pulling a fresh magazine for her sidearm without looking at him. "Left flank."

"On it."

He doesn't wait for a reaction. The Mark V's boots fire, launching him straight into the drone swarm.

Natasha goes low, sliding under the first drone's sweep. Her knife finds a knee joint. She rolls, comes up firing into a second drone's optical cluster. For a half second the count in her head matters more than the pain in her ribs. Tony doesn't bother with finesse. His repulsor blasts punch clean through chassis plating. He tanks a collision with a third drone, shoulders absorbing the impact, and tears its power core free with a gauntleted fist.

The drones fall. The seconds stack up.

By the time the last chassis hits the floor, the space where the Whiplash suit stood is empty. A service hatch gapes in the far wall, its locking bolts sheared clean through.

No trail of tracks or debris remains.

Just gone.
