The warm glow of candlelight flickered softly around the room.
Outside the massive glass windows, countless fireflies danced through the darkness like tiny floating stars.
The entire place felt dreamlike.Romantic. Beautiful. And honestly?
A little unreal.
Amara sat at the elegantly decorated table, still struggling to believe all of this was real. The candles. The flowers. The rare wine. The effort. Everything.
All of it had been prepared by Lucien.
For her.
A faint blush still lingered on her cheeks every time she remembered that.
Across from her, Lucien sat looking entirely too handsome for anyone's mental health.
Amara decided she disliked that. A lot.
Because every time she looked at him, her brain seemed to stop functioning correctly.
And currently?
It was functioning even less than usual.
She picked up another bite of food and continued eating while Lucien spoke.
The food was incredible.
Absolutely incredible.
She had no idea how he'd managed to get food from a restaurant this fancy all the way to Forks.
But she wasn't complaining.
Not even a little.
Meanwhile, Lucien continued explaining everything. The truth. The real truth.
About vampires. About his family. About their world. About the dangers hidden beneath it.
"I wanted you to hear everything from me," Lucien said quietly.
Amara nodded.
Chew.
Nod.
Lucien smiled faintly. Then continued.
He explained the Volturi. Who they were. How they enforced vampire laws. Why secrecy was so important. Who led them. The consequences of breaking their rules.
Amara listened carefully.
Or at least...
She was trying to. There was just a lot.
A lot.
Then Lucien began explaining everything about his family.
"Alice can see possible futures."
Nod.
"Jasper can influence emotions."
Nod.
"Edward can read minds."
Nod.
"He can hear everyone's thoughts except yours and Bella's."
Nod.
"Our coven survives on animal blood instead of human blood."
Nod.
Lucien paused. Looked up.
And found Amara doing exactly what she'd been doing for the last twenty minutes.
Chewing.
Nodding.
Trying very hard to process information. He watched her for a moment. Then another. Then he couldn't help it.
A quiet laugh escaped him. A small snort following immediately after.
Amara stopped chewing. Her eyes narrowed suspiciously. "What?"
Lucien quickly composed himself. "Nothing."
She pointed her fork at him. "You're laughing at me."
"I'm not."
"You absolutely are."
His smile widened. "You just look adorable."
Amara immediately looked away.A faint pink color appeared on her cheeks."Whatever."
Lucien looked thoroughly pleased with himself.
Which only made her more embarrassed. To save herself, she quickly changed the topic.
"Okay."
She pointed at him. "You told me about Alice."
Another point.
"Edward."
Another point.
"Jasper."
Then she leaned forward. "What about you?"
Lucien went still. A small smile appeared on his face."My gift?"
Amara nodded eagerly. "Your gift."
For a moment, Lucien seemed thoughtful. Then he leaned back slightly in his chair. "My gift is somewhar you can Dominance."
Amara blinked. "...That sounds dramatic."
"It is."
Amara immediately sat up straighter. Now she was interested. Very interested.
Lucien chuckled softly before beginning. "It is a mental gift."
His golden eyes met hers."It allows me to place pressure on the minds and instincts of people around me."
Amara blinked."Pressure?"
Lucien nodded."When most people are near me while I'm using it, they feel as though they're standing before something stronger than themselves."He spoke calmly.
Almost casually.Which somehow made it more terrifying.
"Their instincts tell them to be cautious."
"Or?"
"To submit."
Amara's fork froze halfway to her mouth."...Oh."
Lucien continued."Humans often become nervous."
"They struggle to maintain eye contact."
"They become hyper-aware of my presence."
"They hesitate before speaking."
"Weaker minds sometimes freeze entirely."
Amara slowly lowered her fork."...That sounds horrifying."
Lucien laughed."It can be."
He continued explaining. How younger vampires struggled under it. How commands became harder to ignore. How people instinctively obeyed him even when they didn't want to.
How the atmosphere itself seemed to change whenever he used the gift seriously. And finally...
How at its strongest...
Humans could collapse. And weaker vampires could become completely immobilized.
Silence filled the table.
Amara stared. And stared. And stared. Her mouth slowly opened. "...Woah."
Lucien laughed. The expression on her face was priceless.
Then Amara frowned. "Wait."
Lucien raised an eyebrow. "What?"
She pointed at herself. "But none of that works on me."
Lucien's smile softened. "No."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
That answer surprised her.
Lucien rarely admitted not knowing something. "It works on Bella."
He shrugged. "It works on every human and supernatural beings I've ever met "
His eyes lingered on her. "But never you." Something warm settled in his chest.Even now, after all this time, he still couldn't explain it.
His gift touched everyone. Everyone. Except her.
Amara looked oddly pleased by this information.."So your super scary vampire power just doesn't work on me?"
Lucien sighed dramatically. "Unfortunately."
Amara immediately grinned. "That's hilarious."
"It really isn't."
"It really is."
Lucien shook his head. Then smiled despite himself.
A few moments later, Amara suddenly asked, "So..."
Lucien narrowed his eyes. That tone was dangerous.
"Are you powerful?"
Lucien laughed. "A little."
"A little?"
"A reasonable amount."
"A reasonable amount sounds suspicious."
Lucien wisely decided to change the topic. "How's the food?"
And just like that...
Amara forgot everything. Immediately.
Her eyes lit up. "Oh my God, it's amazing."
Lucien smiled.
She launched into an enthusiastic explanation about the food. The texture. The flavor. The sauce. The seasoning.
At one point she became so excited she accidentally held her fork toward him. "Try this."
Lucien glanced at the fork.
Then at her.
Amara froze.
The realization hit. "Oh."
Her face fell. "Sorry."
She slowly lowered the fork. "You can't eat."
The disappointment on her face was immediate. And genuine.
Lucien's chest tightened. For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he smiled softly. "It's okay, love."
Before she could react...
He leaned forward. And took the bite directly from her fork.
Amara froze. Completely. Utterly. Hopelessly. Frozen.
Lucien looked directly into her eyes while chewing. The shameless man.
A deep blush exploded across her face. She immediately looked down at her hands. Refusing to make eye contact.
Meanwhile
Lucien stopped moving. Because something impossible had happened.
He could taste it. The food. The flavor. The seasoning. The texture. Everything.
Not dirt. Not ash. Not nothing. Actual taste. Actual flavor. For the first time in decades.
Lucien stared silently. A strange emotion passing through him.
Every meal he'd ever attempted since becoming a vampire had tasted like dust.
Yet now
This tasted real. The only difference was
Amara. His gaze lifted toward her. She was still staring at her hands.
Blushing furiously. Completely unaware.
Lucien felt something tighten painfully inside his chest. Something warm. Something terrifying. Something precious.
"What happened?" Amara asked quietly.
Lucien blinked. Then smiled. "It's nothing." And for now...
He kept that miracle to himself. The rest of the evening passed in laughter. Stories. Teasing. Conversations.
And moments neither of them wanted to end.
By the time they left, the night had already grown deep.
Lucien drove her black Audi through the quiet roads of Forks.
One hand rested on the steering wheel. The other held Amara's hand.Neither seemed interested in letting go.Not even once.
And before either of them realized it
They were back at the Swan residence. The house stood quietly beneath the night sky.The porch light glowing softly.
Lucien got out first. Then walked around the car to open Amara's door.
Amara rolled her eyes. But she was smiling. He took her hand. And neither let go.
For a long moment, they simply stood there.Looking at each other. The world felt strangely quiet.
Lucien stared into her eyes.Like she was the only thing that mattered.Like she was the answer to every question he'd ever had.
His voice became serious. Soft. Careful. "Amara."
She blinked."Hm?"
Lucien tightened his hold on her hand.
And asked the most important question he'd ever asked."Will you be my girlfriend?"
Everything seemed to stop.Amara stared. Her brain went completely blank. For once..
Absolutely no sarcastic comment appeared. No joke. No teasing. Nothing.
Just her rapidly beating heart.
And Lucien looking at her like the answer meant everything.Because it did.
Amara swallowed. Then quietly said."...Yes."
The smile that appeared on Lucien's face could have powered an entire city.
But Amara quickly raised a finger."However."
Lucien immediately looked
concerned."However?"
She narrowed her eyes."If you ever disappear again."
Lucien winced.
"If you ignore me again."
Another wince.
"If you leave me wondering what's happening again."
Lucien looked genuinely guilty.
"I will leave you."
Silence.
Lucien didn't hesitate. Not even for a second. "I won't." His voice was steady. Certain. Absolute. "Even if I have to fight the entire world." His thumb brushed gently against hers. "I won't leave you."
Amara didn't fully understand the depth behind those words. But Lucien meant every single one. For him
Leaving her had never been an option. Never.
Amara smiled softly. And Lucien's entire expression melted. Then he leaned forward.
And pressed a gentle kiss against her forehead. Tender. Careful. Precious. Like she was something sacred.
Inside the house
Bella was currently holding onto Charlie's arm with both hands.
"No."
Charlie pointed dramatically toward the front door. "I just want to talk."
Bella groaned. "You said that three times already."
"I do."
"You don't."
"I absolutely do."
Bella physically dug her heels into the floor. "Charlie."
"He took my kid on a date."
Bella sighed."Oh my God."
Outside
Amara and Lucien remained completely unaware.
Still standing together beneath the porch light. Still smiling. Still holding hands.
