Chapter 36 - CHAPTER 36– TRIAL OF THE RELIC

Chapter 36 – Trial of the Relic

The sky above Eldralith seemed to split as steel and flame collided.

Caldus's greatsword descended like a falling star, silver fire trailing behind. Chen Yue's Voidfire surged upward, wings blazing violet, green, and crimson. The impact detonated in a blinding flare that shook the amphitheater to its foundations.

Spectators shielded their eyes, nobles clutched at their pearls, adventurers shouted in awe. When the light dimmed, both fighters still stood midair—hovering, locked in a deadlock of sheer will.

And then, the Relic pulsed.

---

The Awakening

The fragment in its pedestal erupted, golden-violet light lancing across the arena. Veins of ancient energy spread through the stage, splitting stone, twisting air.

Ayara stumbled, clutching her chest. "The Relic—it's not just reacting—it's choosing."

Velira cursed, drawing her blade instinctively. "Then it had better choose right."

The System's voice rang cold in Chen Yue's mind:

[Ancestral Fragment has initiated Worthiness Trial.]

[Warning: Combatants locked within trial domain.]

Before Chen Yue could react, the world around him shattered.

---

The Trial Domain

The roar of the crowd faded. The amphitheater dissolved into a wasteland of endless ash and fire. A broken sky loomed overhead, painted in violet storms.

Only Chen Yue and Caldus remained—though faintly, Chen Yue felt Ayara and Velira's bond threads still tethered to him, glowing like stars against the void.

Caldus looked around, eyes widening. "What is this sorcery?"

Chen Yue steadied his breath. "Not sorcery. A trial."

At the center of the wasteland, the Relic floated, blazing brighter than ever. From its light, a figure emerged—a towering silhouette robed in tattered black, eyes burning with violet flame.

Its voice shook the sky.

"In the age before mana, strength was forged in flame and blood. You who reach for my fragment—prove yourselves worthy, or be consumed."

The shadow raised its hand. Blades of fire and shadow rained down.

---

Bond in the Ashlands

Caldus raised his greatsword, silver wings flaring. He blocked the first strike, but the sheer weight drove him to his knees.

Chen Yue answered with Voidfire, arcs of silver-violet flame burning the rain to ash.

The shadow laughed. "One bound by duty, one by bonds of heart. Which flame will endure?"

Through the bond, Ayara's voice reached Chen Yue faintly, warm and steady. You're not alone, Yue. Feel us—we're here.

Velira's voice cut through, fierce as steel. Burn with us. Don't you dare falter.

Their strength poured into him. His flame surged, wings blazing brighter.

Caldus glanced at him, sweat dripping beneath his helm. "What magic is this?!"

Chen Yue gritted his teeth. "Not magic. Trust."

---

Trial of the Shadow Guardian

The shadow charged, swinging a blade of pure violet fire. Chen Yue met it head-on, wings flaring. Their clash ripped craters into the ash, shockwaves splitting mountains in the distance.

Caldus lunged in, his greatsword striking the guardian's back. But instead of harming it, the shadow merely laughed, flames devouring the silver.

"You fight alone," the shadow mocked. "Chains of pride bind you, knight. You cannot endure."

Caldus staggered, his aura faltering.

The guardian turned its fire upon Chen Yue. He braced, but Ayara's warmth steadied his breath, Velira's rage hardened his flame. Together, their resonance burned through the storm.

Chen Yue roared, striking with a technique that poured every ounce of their bond into one strike:

"Flame of Three Hearts—Resonant Break!"

The blast split the guardian's fire, carving through its chest.

For the first time, the shadow faltered.

---

Caldus's Fall

Breathing hard, Caldus forced himself upright, eyes burning with stubborn pride. "I am not… unworthy!"

He raised his sword, summoning the last of his mana. But the Relic's light recoiled from him, sparks searing his flesh. His scream echoed across the ashlands as the wings of silver flame shattered.

The shadow's voice thundered. "Chains of pride cannot hold flame eternal."

Caldus fell to his knees, his aura snuffed like a candle. The trial had rejected him.

Chen Yue, wings blazing, stepped forward.

---

The Worthy Flame

The Relic's light focused on him now, searing and heavy.

"Your flame… is not your own," the shadow intoned. "You burn with three hearts, not one. Will you bear this burden, knowing bonds may break, or betray?"

Chen Yue met its gaze, unwavering. "Yes. Because strength built alone crumbles. But together, it endures. If that is a weakness, I'll gladly carry it."

Ayara's voice trembled through the bond. Yue…

Velira's was fiercer, yet softer than ever. Idiot. Don't make me cry in front of gods.

The Relic pulsed, its golden-violet light pouring into Chen Yue's chest. His Qi roared, dantian blazing as though a sun had been lit inside him.

The shadow's voice faded, almost approving. "Then carry my flame, bearer of bonds. Defy the heavens, if you dare."

The ashlands dissolved.

---

Return to the Arena

With a blinding flash, the trial ended. The amphitheater returned—the crowd still mid-cheer, though moments had passed outside while ages had passed within.

Caldus collapsed to the arena floor, armor cracked, aura extinguished. He was alive, but broken.

Chen Yue landed lightly, his wings folding into embers. The Relic hovered before him, its light dimmed but steady, drawn to his flame.

The Grandmaster's voice boomed, trembling with awe. "Victor… Chen Yue!"

The amphitheater erupted in chaos—cheers, shouts, furious whispers. Nobles clutched their robes, emissaries cursed, and adventurers screamed his name.

On the stands, Ayara's tears ran freely. Velira allowed herself a rare smile, though her eyes glistened.

---

The Crown of Flame

The Relic sank into Chen Yue's chest, fusing with his dantian. His flame blazed brighter than ever, steady and deep, no longer merely Voidfire but something older, purer—cultivation flame reborn.

The System's voice confirmed:

[Ancestral Fragment absorbed.]

[Cultivation Path advanced: Flame Sovereign's Embryo.]

[Bond Resonance stabilized.]

Chen Yue's knees nearly buckled, the weight of the power pressing down. But Ayara and Velira's presence in the bond steadied him. Together, they lifted his flame.

He raised his head to the stunned crowd, eyes burning with violet-gold fire.

The cultivator had claimed his place.
