Chapter 29 – Chains of Corruption
The gong struck once, echoing like a thunderclap through the amphitheater.
Chen Yue stood in the stone corridor that led to the dueling platforms, Ayara and Velira flanking him. The iron gates loomed ahead, waiting to swallow him into another storm of blood.
But it wasn't the gate that made Ayara tremble—it was the bond.
Through the Triad Flow, his emotions leaked into her veins. His calm mask couldn't hide the truth: a storm of doubt, anger, and hunger boiled beneath his surface.
She shivered, clutching her staff. "Chen Yue… your flame, it's growing darker."
Velira's sharp eyes flicked to him, her jaw tightening. "She's right. When you struck that last cultivator, I felt it too. Rage. Bloodlust. You're losing control."
Chen Yue turned his gaze to the gate, violet-silver eyes cold. "Control is an illusion. Survival isn't."
The gong rang again. The gate began to rise.
The Corrupted Mage
The arena roared as Chen Yue stepped onto the black stone platform. Across from him stood his opponent: a mage draped in shredded robes, his skin pallid, his veins glowing faintly red. His eyes were pits of fire, yet they burned without reason or sanity.
The Tournament Master's voice boomed. "Tonight's duel—Chen Yue, the Nameless Flame, against Varthis of the Red Vein!"
The crowd screamed, drunk on bloodlust.
Chen Yue's system whispered sharply.
[Alert: Ebonflare Corruption Detected]
Host: Varthis, Mana Mage
Corruption Level: 72%
Warning: Opponent may lose humanity mid-battle.
Varthis lifted his staff, a shriek escaping his lips as the corruption surged. Red flame erupted from his body, twisting like living tendrils, consuming the sand beneath his feet.
Ayara gasped from the stands. "That's not mana—!"
Velira cursed. "It's a parasite."
Chen Yue steadied his breathing, Chaos Meridian pulsing. So this is the Ebonflare's rot…
The Duel Begins
The gong shattered the silence.
Varthis screamed, hurling a storm of crimson fire toward Chen Yue. The flames writhed like serpents, gnashing with fang-like maws.
Chen Yue's body blurred, Voidfire flashing around him as he sidestepped, the Triad Flow whispering guidance from Ayara and Velira. His hand shot forward, silver-violet flame condensing into a spear.
He hurled it—
The red flames swallowed it whole.
Varthis cackled, his body swelling grotesquely as the corruption spread. His skin split, crimson light pouring from his wounds, until he resembled a living vessel of molten hate.
Ayara's heart clenched, feeling Chen Yue's frustration pulse through the bond. "Don't give in!" she whispered desperately, gripping the railing of the stands.
Velira's eyes narrowed. "He's already on the edge."
Chains of Fire
Varthis slammed his staff into the ground. Red chains burst from the stone, surging toward Chen Yue like snakes. They coiled around his arms, legs, chest, burning with corruption that sought to burrow into his flesh.
Pain seared his body. His vision swam with red.
The system screamed.
[Warning: Corruption attempting to infiltrate Chaos Meridian.]
[Countermeasure Required.]
Chen Yue's teeth bared. "Then burn!"
His Chaos Meridian erupted, Voidfire searing outward in a violent explosion. The silver-violet flames devoured the red chains, but not before traces of corruption licked at his veins.
A whisper entered his mind—low, hungry, insidious.
Devour. Consume. Kill.
Chen Yue staggered, his aura shuddering between control and chaos.
The Bond Strains
Through the Triad Flow, Ayara and Velira felt it all—the whisper clawing at his soul, the bloodlust boiling in his chest.
Ayara cried out, clutching her heart as if it were her own voice whispering in her head. "It's inside him!"
Velira grabbed her shoulder, steadying her even as her own body trembled. "Focus! Don't let his madness swallow you."
Ayara's tears streaked down her cheeks. "But I can't—he's drowning and I can feel it!"
Velira's jaw clenched. "Then we drown together."
Breaking the Chains
In the arena, Chen Yue fell to one knee, Varthis's laughter echoing as the corrupted mage loomed over him.
"Your flame is nothing," Varthis snarled, his voice layered with something inhuman. "The Ebonflare devours all."
The whisper in Chen Yue's head screamed louder. Devour him. Take his power. Kill.
His hands trembled, Voidfire spiraling uncontrollably, threatening to engulf the arena itself.
Ayara's voice pierced the bond. "Chen Yue! You're not just fire—you're more than the chaos. You're you!"
Velira's voice followed, hard as steel. "If you let this thing control you, I'll cut you down myself."
Their wills pressed against his, colliding with the corruption inside him.
The Triad Flow blazed.
Chen Yue's vision cleared. His breath steadied.
And for a heartbeat, he felt their strength as his own—Ayara's light, Velira's fury, his own chaos.
The whisper shrieked and recoiled.
Chen Yue rose.
Victory
Voidfire ignited, purer than before, surging into a storm that wrapped his fists.
Varthis screamed, chains lashing again, but Chen Yue dashed forward, his flame carving through them like paper.
He struck once.
His palm slammed against Varthis's chest. The silver-violet fire erupted inward, devouring the corruption at its root.
The mage shrieked, his body splitting as the Ebonflare parasite burned away. His flesh crumbled into ash, leaving nothing but silence.
The crowd roared in awe and terror.
Chen Yue stood panting, Voidfire simmering around him, his eyes glowing with cold fury.
The gong struck. The duel was over.
Aftermath
Back in the rest chamber, Ayara collapsed into his arms, tears streaming down her face. "You almost lost yourself," she whispered. "I felt it."
Chen Yue's hands trembled as he held her. "I… almost did."
Velira stood behind them, her arms crossed, her voice low. "That bond of ours—it cuts both ways. You can't afford to fall. If you do, we all do."
Chen Yue met her eyes. For the first time, he saw not just fury in her gaze, but fear.
"I won't let it happen again," he said softly.
Velira looked away, her jaw tight.
Whispers in the Dark
That night, as Chen Yue meditated alone, the system flickered.
[Fragment Echo Detected.]
Corruption Source: The Seven Veins.
Message Hidden within Varthis's death aura…
Chen Yue's breath caught as a whisper threaded through his mind, faint but clear.
"Seek the Map… before the Veins take it. The sealed realms… must not open."
The voice faded.
Chen Yue's eyes snapped open, cold fire burning in his chest.
Not only was cultivation stolen—someone was still trying to keep it sealed.
And the tournament prize was the key.
