Chapter 107 - Chapter 107: [The Festival OF Masks ARC ] The Scorn That Made Him

Chapter 107 (Part 18)

The morning of the football final was different from the days before.

The air was cooler, carrying the scent of freshly cut grass and the distant hum of an expectant crowd.

The festival grounds had swelled with spectators students, teachers, parents, visitors from every corner of Lemuria. Flags of sixteen schools fluttered in the light breeze, but two colors dominated: the green and gold of Castrone, and the blue and white of Nordmark.

Alok stood at the edge of the pitch, his hands in his pockets, his expression calm. He hadn't planned to play. He had come to watch, to observe, to see if the dark figures would appear again.

But things had changed.

Rihan jogged over, his face tight. "We have a problem."

Alok looked at him. "What happened?"

"Kael. Their left winger. Nordmark took him out in the warm up. Dirty tackle. He's done for the match." Rihan's jaw was set, his eyes hard. "We need a replacement."

Alok said nothing.

"I know you didn't sign up for this," Rihan continued, his voice low. "But I need you. Not because you're fast. Because you see things other people don't."

Alok looked at the field. The Nordmark team was already in position, their blue and white uniforms bright against the green grass. Their captain was laughing with his teammates, confident, dismissive.

They think they've already won, Alok thought. They don't even see us as competition.

He remembered the words from the previous matches. The dismissive glances. The casual arrogance.

Rihan saw the hesitation. "Alok, I know you don't...."

"Fine," Alok cut him off. "I'll play."

Rihan blinked. "Wait, really?"

"Don't make me change my mind."

Rihan grinned. "Too late. You're in."

The first half was brutal.

Without Alok, the Castrone team struggled to find their rhythm. Nordmark attacked relentlessly, their passes sharp, their tackles hard. The Castrone defense held as long as they could, but the pressure was too much.

In the twenty third minute, Nordmark scored.

The goal came from a quick counter-attack a long pass, a sprint down the wing, a cross into the box. Their captain rose above the Castrone defenders and headed the ball into the net.

1-0.

The Nordmark supporters erupted. Their flags waved wildly, their voices loud and triumphant.

The Castrone players slumped. Their shoulders dropped. Their eyes lost their fire.

Rihan shouted, "Keep your heads up! We're still in this!"

But the energy had shifted. Nordmark was confident. Castrone was faltering.

At halftime, the score was still 1-0.

Rihan gathered his team in a circle, his voice sharp and commanding.

"We're better than this. We've trained harder than this. They're not unbeatable they're just arrogant. And arrogance makes people careless."

He looked at Alok. "You're going in."

A few players looked surprised. They had seen Alok around, but never on the field. He wasn't a regular. He wasn't even on the roster.

Rihan saw their doubt. "Trust me," he said. "He's exactly what we need."

The second half began.

Alok took his position on the left wing. The Nordmark players looked at him with amusement.

"Who's this?" one of them muttered. "A replacement? Looks like they're scraping the bottom of the barrel."

Their captain smirked. "Don't worry about him. He's nobody. This match isn't for amateurs."

The words landed like a slap.

Alok felt something shift inside him a cold, sharp edge that had been buried for years. He had heard those words before. In different forms, from different people. Nobody. Amateur. Not good enough.

Not this time.

His jaw tightened. His eyes narrowed. The calm, measured expression he usually wore was gone, replaced by something harder.

Rihan saw it. He had seen that look only once before in the labyrinth, when Alok had faced Extera. A look that meant he was done holding back.

"Alok?" Rihan called out, his voice uncertain. "You okay?"

Alok didn't answer. He just walked to his position and waited.

The whistle blew.

The first ten minutes were quiet.

Alok moved cautiously, feeling out the field, studying the Nordmark players. He noted their positions, their habits, the way they shifted when the ball moved.

They're aggressive, he thought. They commit early. They leave gaps.

He waited.

The ball came to him. He controlled it with a single touch, his movements smooth and economical. A Nordmark player rushed toward him, sliding in for a tackle.

Alok sidestepped. The player flew past him.

Another came from the side. Alok cut inside, leaving him grasping at air.

The crowd began to stir.

"Who is that?"

"I don't know. He's not on the roster."

"He's wearing Castrone's colors!"

Alok passed the ball to Rihan, who was already sprinting toward the goal. Rihan received it cleanly, sidestepped the goalkeeper, and slotted it into the net.

1-1.

The Castrone crowd erupted.

Rihan jogged back, grinning. "That's how we do it!"

But Alok didn't smile. His eyes were still fixed on the Nordmark captain.

That was just the beginning.

The momentum had shifted.

Nordmark no longer looked dismissive. They looked wary. They had seen Alok's movements, felt the shift in the game's rhythm. They knew something had changed.

Their captain barked orders. "Mark him! Don't let him get the ball!"

But it was too late.

Alok was already moving.

He received the ball near the sideline, his touch precise, his feet light. A Nordmark player rushed toward him, his tackle reckless. Alok skipped over it, his momentum unbroken.

Another came from the side. Alok cut inside, leaving him behind.

The crowd was shouting now. The Nordmark goalkeeper was shouting, positioning his wall.

Alok didn't shoot. He passed.

The ball curved toward Rihan, who was charging into the box. Rihan met it with perfect timing, his header powerful and accurate.

2-1.

The crowd roared.

Rihan pumped his fist. "That's two!"

The Nordmark captain was furious.

"You let a nobody make a fool of you!" he shouted at his teammates. "This is a match, not a training session!"

But the damage was done.

Alok was in control. He moved across the field like he had been playing his whole life not with flashy tricks, but with precision and intelligence. He read the game like a chess board, seeing moves before they happened.

The ball came to him again. He drew defenders toward him, creating space for his teammates. Rihan received a pass, stepped past a defender, and shot.

3-1.

Rihan pointed at Alok. "That's three!"

Nordmark tried to fight back.

They attacked with desperation, their passes frantic, their shots wild. But Alok had already read their patterns. He intercepted a pass, dribbled past two players, and passed to Rihan.

Rihan shot. The goalkeeper dived.

4-1.

The crowd was on its feet.

The Nordmark captain had lost control.

His shouts were desperate, his movements erratic. He lunged toward Alok, his tackle reckless, his cleats raised.

Alok sidestepped. The captain crashed to the ground.

The referee's whistle blew.

"Foul!"

The Nordmark captain received a yellow card. He stared at Alok with cold fury.

"Who are you?" he demanded. "You're not on the roster. You're nobody."

Alok met his gaze.

"Somebody you couldn't stop."

The match continued.

Alok finished the game with three goals. Rihan matched him goal for goal. The final whistle blew.

6-1.

The Castrone players celebrated wildly. Rihan was lifted onto his teammates' shoulders, laughing, his face flushed with victory.

Alok stood at the edge of the pitch, his chest rising and falling, his expression calm. The cold fire in his eyes had faded, replaced by the familiar stillness.

POV SHIFT – Rihan

Rihan came up behind Alok, grabbing his shoulder.

"Who are you?" he asked, his voice half-laughing. "Where did you learn to play like that?"

Alok shrugged. "I told you. I used to play."

"Used to play?" Rihan shook his head. "You didn't just play. You dominated. You came alive out there."

Alok didn't answer.

Rihan looked at him, studying his face. "I've never seen you like that. So focused. So intense. What happened?"

Alok was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "He called me an amateur. A nobody."

Rihan blinked. "That's what did it? One comment?"

"He said this match isn't for amateurs."

Rihan stared at him. Then he laughed a loud, surprised laugh.

"Alok, I've seen you face down monsters. I've seen you fight things that would make most people run. And a football player calling you an amateur is what gets to you?"

Alok's lips twitched. "Everyone has a limit."

Rihan shook his head, still laughing. "That's insane. That's completely insane." He clapped Alok on the shoulder. "But I'm not complaining. You were incredible out there."

Alok allowed a small smile.

"Don't get used to it."

The crowd was still buzzing.

Groups of students from different schools gathered around the field, their voices loud with excitement.

"Who was that? The one with the number seven? He was everywhere!"

"I don't know. He wasn't on the starting lineup. He came on as a replacement."

"That was no replacement. That was a specialist."

"And the captain? Rihan? He was on fire too."

"Castrone's got a team. Not just a team a partnership."

POV SHIFT – Ravel (Observing)

Ravel stood at the edge of the stands, his arms crossed, his eyes fixed on Alok.

He had watched the entire match. He had seen Alok's movements, his timing, his control. He had seen the cold fire in Alok's eyes when the Nordmark captain had spoken.

This is the same guy I thought was weak, Ravel thought. The same guy I used to bully.

He shook his head slowly.

What was I thinking?

He watched Alok walk toward the exit, his steps steady, his face calm.

He's never been weak. He's been hiding. And today, he showed everyone what he's capable of.

POV SHIFT – Alok (That Night)

The celebration was still going on in the distance.

Alok sat alone at the edge of the festival grounds, his back against a tree, his hands resting on his knees. The pendant pulsed gently against his chest, warm and quiet.

He had played well. He had surprised them.

But his mind was elsewhere.

Nordmark's captain didn't know me. He thought I was just another player. But someone else was watching, someone who knew exactly who I am.

He thought about the man in the black coat. The woman in the dark jacket. The players who had been taken.

If they saw me today... if they're watching... what will they do next?

He looked up at the stars.

I need to be ready. Not just for the next match. For whatever comes after.
