Chapter 98 - Chapter 98:[The Festival OF Masks ARC] The Weight of a Broken Mirror

Chapter 98 (Part 09)

The night air was cool against Tira's skin, but she barely felt it.

She stood at the edge of the festival grounds, her arms wrapped around herself, her eyes fixed on the distant lights of the main arena.

The sounds of celebration drifted toward her laughter, music, the clinking of glasses but they felt distant, muffled, like sounds heard through water.

She was not celebrating.

She was remembering.

FLASHBACK – NWB Academy, Age 13

The academy had been her mother's idea.

"High Noble Academy," her mother had said, her voice cold and clipped. "You will attend. You will make connections. You will not embarrass the family name."

Tira had nodded. She had always nodded.

She had been sent to NWB Academy with nothing but a suitcase and a carefully constructed mask of obedience.

The other students were children of Feilw Land's most powerful families heirs to fortunes, bloodlines, and ancient grudges. They moved through the marble halls with easy confidence, their laughter bright and careless.

Tira did not laugh. She was too busy watching, learning, surviving.

And then she had seen him.

Caelum Ashenford.

He was tall, golden haired, with a smile that could make anyone feel seen. He was popular, charming, and completely unaware of the effect he had on her.

When he had first spoken to her just a casual greeting in the corridor Tira had felt something crack open inside her chest. For the first time in her life, someone had looked at her like she mattered.

She had fallen in love the way a drowning person gasps for air.

He chose me, she had thought. He looked at me and chose me.

She had been wrong.

The memory shifted, sharp and painful.

The courtyard. The afternoon sun. The girl with the perfect smile and perfect hair, laughing at something Caelum had said. Caelum, who was looking at her with the same smile he had once given Tira.

"I'm sorry," he had said, his voice almost gentle. "I thought you understood. We were just... having fun."

Having fun.

Fun.

She had given him everything her heart, her trust, her hope and he had called it fun.

Tira had not screamed. She had not cried.

She had waited.

FLASHBACK – The Dormitory, NWB Academy

The night was quiet.

Tira had waited until the other students were asleep. She had waited until the corridors were empty. She had waited until she was sure no one would see her.

She had taken the small knife from her desk the one she used to sharpen her pencils and walked to Caelum's room.

He had looked surprised to see her. Then annoyed. Then, when he saw the knife, afraid.

"Tira, what are you...."

She had not let him finish.

She had struck him, again and again, her movements jerky and desperate and utterly silent. He had tried to fight back, but she had been faster, stronger, more determined.

When it was over, she had stood over his body, breathing heavily, her hands slick with blood.

She had not cried.

She had dragged him to her room. She had laid him on her bed. She had cleaned his face, brushed his hair, and covered him with her blanket.

And then she had lain beside him.

For seven days, she had stayed in that room. She had spoken to him, whispered to him, pretended he was still alive. She had slept beside him, her hand on his chest, feeling nothing but cold stillness.

She had refused to let him go.

If I can't have you, she had thought, then no one will.

The memory dissolved, replaced by the cold white walls of the asylum.

Tira flinched, her eyes snapping open. She was no longer in the past. She was still standing at the edge of the festival grounds, the distant laughter still echoing in her ears.

She pressed her palms against her eyes.

I don't want to remember.

But the memories kept coming.

FLASHBACK – The Asylum, Age 13 –15

The room had been white.

White walls. White sheets. White light that never seemed to dim.

The doctors had asked her questions. Endless questions. Why did you do it? Did you know what you were doing? Do you feel remorse?

Tira had answered them all. Perfectly. Politely. Calmly.

She had learned to smile again. She had learned to nod and agree. She had learned to say exactly what they wanted to hear.

But inside, she had been counting the days.

Seventy-three. Seventy-four. Seventy-five.

I am still here. I am still breathing. I am still waiting.

She had waited until they believed she was healed. She had waited until they opened the door.

And then she had walked out, into the cold gray light of freedom, with nothing but a bag of clothes and a heart made of stone.

FLASHBACK – The Meeting with Vaelia, Age 15

She had been sitting on a bench outside the asylum, waiting for the bus, when the black car had pulled up beside her.

The window had rolled down, revealing a woman with cold eyes and silver hair.

"Tira Enstiya," the woman had said. "I have been looking for you."

Tira had stared at her. "Who are you?"

The woman had smiled. "I am Lady Vaelia Laison. I have no children of my own. And I understand what it is like to be abandoned by those who should have loved you."

Tira's chest had tightened.

"Come with me," Vaelia had continued, her voice soft but unyielding. "I will give you a home. A purpose. A reason to live."

Tira had not asked questions. She had simply climbed into the car and never looked back.

The present returned, sharp and cold.

Tira stood at the edge of the festival grounds, her arms wrapped around herself, her eyes fixed on the distant lights.

She had done terrible things. She had killed. She had betrayed. She had become the very thing she had once hated.

But she had done it all to survive.

Alok.

She thought of him. His quiet strength. His cold eyes. The way he had looked at her when she had given him the water bottle, searching for something she refused to show.

He doesn't trust me. He shouldn't. I don't deserve his trust.

But she had seen something in his eyes when he looked at Ceya. Something she recognized.

He loves her.

A pang of something sharp and bitter twisted in her chest. Not anger. Not hatred. Something closer to envy.

She has everything, Tira thought. A family that loves her. A family that didn't abandon her. A boy who would cross worlds to save her.

What do I have?

She looked down at her phone. A message from Vaelia glowed on the screen.

[Message: The lighthouse. Midnight. Do not fail me.]

Tira's hand trembled.

This is my only chance, she thought. If I fail Vaelia, I will have nothing. No home. No purpose. No one.

But if I do this... I will lose myself forever.

She stood in the darkness, torn between two impossible choices.

And somewhere in the distance, the clock began to chime.

POV SHIFT – Alok & Rihan (Brief)

Alok stood in the shadows of his tent, watching the distant lights of the festival.

Rihan stood beside him, his arms crossed, his face grim.

"She'll do it," Rihan said quietly. "Tira. She'll use Sera to lead you to the trap."

Alok nodded. "I know."

"Then why are you going?"

Alok turned to look at him. The moonlight carved shadows across his face.

"Because sometimes, the only way to win is to walk into the trap and break it from the inside."

Rihan stared at him for a long moment.

"Alok... you're playing a dangerous game."

Alok's expression did not change.

"I know."

He looked back at the lights.

"But I've been playing dangerous games my whole life."

POV SHIFT – Tira

The clock continued to chime, each strike echoing in the silence.

Tira looked down at her phone once more.

Vaelia's message. The threat. The promise.

She thought about the asylum. The white walls. The endless questions.

She thought about Vaelia. The first person who had ever shown her kindness. The only person who had ever believed in her.

She thought about Alok. The boy who had never wronged her. The boy who was about to walk into a trap she had helped set.

Her hand trembled.

If I do this, I will become the monster everyone already thinks I am.

But if I don't... I will lose the only home I've ever known.

She closed her eyes.

When she opened them, her expression was calm. Controlled. Empty.

She typed a reply:

[Message Sent: It will be done.]

She pocketed the phone and walked into the darkness.

The trap was set.

And Alok Fanando was walking straight into it.
