Chapter 36 - CHUCK VS. THE WOOKIEE

The night was quiet inside Chuck's apartment, an unusual stillness settling over the living room. His computer screen glowed with lines of encrypted algorithms from Carmichael Industries — the "think tank" that the public believed was developing clean "arc technology," while in truth it served as the CIA/NSA joint intelligence hub he led.

Chuck leaned back in his chair, rubbing his eyes. Between missions, administrative duties, and keeping Ellie from discovering the truth, sleep had become more of a luxury than a habit.

He barely heard the window slide open.

A blur moved past him, silent, precise, and familiar.

Chuck's hand instinctively reached for the hidden holster under the desk, but before he could draw, a playful voice whispered behind him:

"Miss me, Bartowski?"

Chuck froze. "Karina."

She stepped into view with a smirk — athletic, self-assured, stunning as ever. Her wavy hair fell over one shoulder, and her eyes glittered with mischief and danger in equal measure.

"Relax," she said. "If I wanted you dead, you'd have felt it already."

She leaned in closer. "Though I prefer when you feel other things."

Chuck shut his eyes briefly. "Karina… I'm dating someone."

Karina pouted dramatically. "A surgeon girl, right? Stephanie?"

She circled him like a shark. "Cute. Smart. Not my type."

She tilted her head. "But you were."

He stood, putting space between them. Even now, even after everything, she had a gravitational pull — but Chuck wasn't that guy anymore. At least… not with her.

"What do you want, Karina?" he asked.

"Oh, come on. No hug? After all we've been through?" She fluttered her lashes. "At the Farm… twice… and then in Prague on that little operation?"

She sighed dramatically. "Honestly, I thought you'd be happier to see me."

Chuck swallowed, keeping his tone steady.

"It's good to see you. Just… unexpected."

Karina flicked his chest lightly. "Unexpected is my specialty."

Before Chuck could respond, his phone buzzed.

Sarah Walker: NEED YOU AT HQ. NOW.

Karina glanced at the screen and grinned. "Let me guess — you're working with her again."

Chuck glared. "Don't start."

"Oh, I wouldn't dream of it," Karina teased. "But I should warn you… your girlfriend won't like what Sarah will be dealing with tonight."

CARMICHAEL INDUSTRIES – BRIEFING ROOM

Sarah stood at the center of the room, arms crossed, expression tight. Casey sat in a corner sharpening a knife unnecessarily loudly, muttering threats toward anyone who wasted his time.

Karina strutted in first, flashing a wink at Casey.

"Miss me, Johnny?"

Casey groaned. "Kill me now."

Then Chuck entered behind her.

Sarah's eyes flicked to him — not suspicious, not jealous, but… attentive. Concerned.

She knew Karina brought storms wherever she went.

"Walker," Chuck said, giving a nod. "Casey."

"Bartowski," Casey replied. "You let the human hurricane in. Great."

Karina smirked proudly.

Sarah cleared her throat. "Karina requested agency assistance. DEA flagged a major arms dealer operating out of Echo Park. He's stockpiling weapons and hiding a high-value diamond used as collateral for a terror network."

The screen lit up with an image of the target:

Assad Tafeek. Dangerous. Wealthy. Paranoid.

Karina leaned against the table, unnecessarily close to Chuck.

"He likes flashy things. Expensive things. And blondes."

She glanced knowingly at Sarah.

"So obviously, I needed backup."

Casey scoffed. "Backup? You burn everything you touch."

Karina gave him a wink. "Not everything."

Chuck stepped forward. "So what exactly is the mission objective?"

Sarah tapped the screen. "Karina infiltrates Tafeek's compound. Chuck and Casey run overwatch. I'll enter as her handler."

Karina grinned. "And here I thought Chuck could be my bodyguard again…"

Chuck stiffened slightly — Sarah noticed.

"What was that?" Sarah asked casually, looking between them.

Karina answered before Chuck could.

"Oh, just reminiscing. Chuck and I had quite a partnership once."

Sarah's jaw tensed.

Casey muttered, "Oh boy."

Chuck exhaled. "Karina. Focus."

"Fine, fine," she said. "Let's steal a diamond."

TAFEEK'S ESTATE – NIGHT

Karina slid into the party like a spark in a gasoline river — all curves, charisma, and lethal grace. She wore a red dress that shimmered under the chandeliers, instantly catching the attention of Tafeek and his guards.

Chuck, wearing a tailored Carmichael Industries tuxedo, tapped his earpiece.

"Karina, you've got two hostiles at your 3 o'clock."

"I see them," she whispered. "But they're busy staring at my 12 o'clock."

Sarah rolled her eyes from the surveillance van. "Stay professional."

Casey grumbled. "This is why Walker hates working with her."

Chuck replied, "Karina can handle herself. She just prefers not to."

Inside the estate, Karina seamlessly slipped into Tafeek's circle. Her charm worked instantly — he offered her a drink, then an arm, then access to the private vault level.

"Doors opening," Chuck said as he hacked the security feed.

Karina blew him a kiss toward the camera.

"God, I missed your brain."

"Work," Chuck whispered. "Please."

She smirked and entered the vault.

In minutes, they were in visual of the diamond.

Karina whispered, "Jackpot."

"Grab it," Sarah ordered.

Karina lifted it — the alarm clicked on.

"Uh-oh," she whispered.

Casey sighed. "Here we go."

ESCAPE

Shouts echoed through the estate. Guards rushed in. Chuck left the surveillance position to intercept the incoming wave, taking two down with silent, precise strikes — something that would've shocked the old Chuck Bartowski, but came naturally now.

Casey slammed a guard into a column. "I swear if she gets me shot tonight—"

Karina sprinted out, heels in her hand, diamond in her bra. "Time to go!"

Chuck met her at the exit. "Did you have to hide it there?"

Karina winked. "I know you weren't looking."

Sarah grabbed Karina's wrist. "Next time follow protocol—"

But Karina simply saluted.

"Where's the fun in that?"

SARAH'S APARTMENT – LATER THAT NIGHT

Karina stood in Sarah's doorway, duffel bag slung over her shoulder.

"Your couch still comfortable?" she asked.

"It's a couch," Sarah replied flatly.

Chuck walked Karina inside, hands behind his back like he was escorting a dangerous prisoner.

Karina smirked. "Relax, Chuck. I'm not going to jump you."

"Good," Chuck said. "Because I'm—"

"Dating the surgeon," Karina finished mockingly. "Yes, yes. Adorable. Stable. Boring."

Sarah's eyebrow lifted, subtle but sharp. "Karina."

Karina laughed and plopped onto the couch. "I'm kidding. Well… half-kidding."

Chuck shook his head. "Goodnight, Karina."

"Sweet dreams, lover," she teased.

Sarah froze. Chuck froze. Karina cackled.

"Relax! I meant 'former lover.' Past tense. Mostly."

Chuck cleared his throat.

"I'm leaving now."

He left Sarah's apartment faster than he'd ever left anywhere.

THE SEDUCTION (PG-13)

Hours later, Chuck returned — Sarah had asked him to retrieve the diamond schematics they left behind.

He quietly entered the apartment — and nearly collided with Karina.

She wasn't wearing much.

Just a silky robe tied loosely around her waist, legs bare, hair damp from a shower.

She smiled, slow and predatory.

"Well, well. If it isn't my favorite secret agent."

Chuck swallowed.

"Karina… come on."

She stepped closer. "We're adults. We had fun. Twice."

Her fingers brushed the collar of his shirt.

"And I know you missed me on that assignment in Vienna."

Chuck caught her hand gently and pushed it away.

"Karina. I'm not that guy anymore."

Her eyes flickered with a hint of emotion — disappointment?

Frustration?

Challenge?

"Stephanie must be special," she whispered.

"She is," Chuck said softly.

Karina stared at him a moment longer.

Then, slowly, she smirked again — softer this time.

"Good for you, Bartowski."

Behind them, Sarah appeared in the hallway, watching quietly.

She had heard enough to understand everything.

Karina saw her and whispered to Chuck:

"She's into you, you know."

Chuck blinked. "What?"

But Karina only winked and walked past Sarah as if nothing happened.

THE BETRAYAL

The next morning, Karina was gone.

So was the diamond.

Casey slammed his fist on the table. "I told you! I TOLD YOU!"

Sarah sighed. "Karina wouldn't steal it without a reason."

Chuck nodded. "She's chaotic, not stupid."

An alert came in — Karina was cornered in an abandoned garage by Tafeek's men.

"Let's move," Chuck said, grabbing his gear.

THE FIGHT

The garage echoed with gunfire. Karina was pinned down behind a metal crate, shouting insults in three languages.

Chuck and Casey entered from the side.

Casey took down the first wave with brutal efficiency.

Chuck slid beside Karina. "Lose something?"

She held up the empty diamond case. "Borrowed."

"You're impossible," Chuck said.

She grinned. "But you still came."

He rolled his eyes and pulled her to safety.

Sarah joined them moments later, taking a guard down with a clean, precise strike.

Karina tossed the diamond to Sarah. "There. Happy?"

Sarah nodded. "Ecstatic."

CLOSING

Outside, Karina prepared to leave — backpack slung over one shoulder, sunglasses on.

She paused in front of Chuck.

"You've changed," she said. "I'm not sure if I like it."

Chuck smiled gently.

"You will."

Karina smirked.

"Take care of yourself, Bartowski."

Then she added quietly:

"And take care of Walker. She's good for you."

Sarah blinked, caught off guard.

Karina stepped away, waving without turning back.

Casey muttered, "Good riddance."

Chuck exhaled. Sarah looked toward him, unreadable for a moment… then warm.

"You handled her well," she said softly.

Chuck chuckled. "Define 'well.'"

Sarah smiled — the kind that reached her eyes.

"Better than I expected."

Chuck's phone buzzed — a message from Stephanie:

Can't wait to see you tonight 💜

He smiled, pocketed the phone, and looked back at Sarah and Casey.

"Ready for the next one?"

Casey grunted. Sarah nodded.

And the team stepped forward together.
