Chapter 49 - Chapter 45 : Senju Nawaki

Year 30 August 9th

A year had passed since Sakumo and Shinichi returned to Konoha with Akashi and Akemi in custody. The mission had been clean, decisive, and quietly significant. Since then, the two had waited for the new year to settle before fulfilling their annual missions quota – on C-rank and two B-rank assignments., completed efficiently in spring and summer, where the missions start to pour in.

The aftermath, however, was anything but simple.

Konoha had formally requested an explanation from Iwagakure regarding the espionage. The reply was curt and evasive: {no affiliation}. They acknowledged Akashi as a rogue-nin and requested his escort back to Iwagakure for 'disciplinary processing.' As for Akemi, they claimed she was a former resident of Land of Earth who had long since immigrated to the Land of Fire.

They had no ties nor responsibility.

It was all sophistry.

Senju Tobirama saw through it instantly. Iwagakure had no intention of reclaiming either of them. Aksahi's rogue status was convenient fiction, and Akemi's unofficial role as an infiltrator gave them plausible deniability. It was a game of shadows, one Tobirama had played many times before.

He considered retaliation.

But retaliation meant escalation.

And escalation between major nation meant that Hashirama might have to act.

Tobirama had visited his brother regularly. On the surface, Senju Hashirama looked unchanged strong and smiling with that same gentle and radiant warmth that had once united the clans.

But Tobirama had probed deeper.

With chakra, he had scanned Hashirama's body, tracing the flow of energy through his organs, bones, and cells.

What he found chilled him.

Hashirama's insides were deteriorating rapidly. His regenerative abilities masked the damage, but they no longer repaired it. They merely delayed the inevitable.

'He's falling apart,' Tobirama lamented. 'And he doesn't mind.'

If it were only Iwagakure stirring trouble, Tobirama might have acted. But the reports were clear: Kumogakure, Sunagakure, Kirigakure, and even smaller hidden villages were probing for information on Hashirama. They wanted to know if the Ninja God was still alive. Still strong. Still a deterrent.

Tobirama was caught in dilemma.

He could use Hashirama one last time, parade him before the world, calm the nations, buy Konoha a few more years of peace.

But Hashirama was his brother not a weapon.

And Tobirama could not do that.

Besides, it would only delay the inevitable. The moment Hashirama was gone, the balance would collapse. The other villages would move. The alliances would fracture. And Konoha would stand alone.

This month, Senju Kenichi's wife, Atsuko, was due to give birth. Hashirama had spoken of it often, his eyes bright with anticipation.

["My grandson is coming," he had said. "he must be. I can feel it!"]

Tobirama had listened quietly that day.

He didn't want to disrupt that joy.

Not yet.

Let Hashirama have this moment. Let him hold his grandson. Let him believe, even for a little while, that the future was still bright.

Tobirama stood at the edge of the Hokage's office, staring out over the village rooftops.

The sun was setting, casting a long shadows across the tiled streets. Children laughed in the distance. A hawk circled overhead.

'No matter the effort, conflict seems inevitable in this world.'

He folded his arms as his attention drifted toward the village... Away from the grim future looming over the world.

'A new era is coming. I don't know if I'll be there to witness the changes that will follow...'

He thought of his disciples young, brilliant, and loyal. He thought of the new generation rising beneath his feet. And he thought of the burden he carried alone.

"I can't afford to be sentimental. But I can't afford to be cruel."

The wind shifted as Tobirama turned from the window.

There was work to be done.

***

Konoha had once again entered a festive atmosphere. The village streets were lined with colorful banners, paper lanterns swaying in the crisp autumn breeze. Cafes and restaurants offered generous discounts, and some pubs gave out free drinks; it was cheap, but cheerful. Laughter echoed through the alleys, and music drifted from every corner.

The village was celebrating the birth of Senju Nawaki, grandson of the legendary Senju Hashirama.

The Senju clan was hosting a grand celebration, and like last time, all clans were invited to join.

Uchiha Sosuke and Aiko, Uchiha Eisuke and Asami, Uchiha Kagami and Komei, and Fukashi's family walked together toward the Senju compound. The newborns were left in the clan compound under the care of caretakers and elders. Each wore the formal black high-collared Uchiha robes, reserved for the most important occasion. Their presence was dignified, but their mood was light.

"So, I showed him his place and took first place in every subject again!" Kaito boasted, puffing his chest. "He was no match for me! Hng! As Niichan's ototo, how can I fall behind my peers!"

"Yes! Yes! You are so cute Kai-chan!" Asami squealed, swooping in to hug him and rub her cheek against his face.

"AHHHH!!! Get off me, you demon! Niichan! Dasukete!"

"Ahahaha! Asami-san can you let my ototo go?" Shinichi chuckled.

Asami narrowed her eyes mischievously, as she released Kaito and lunged toward Shinichi.

Whoosh!

"Awww! Shin-chan you don't need to be so shy."

But Shinichi had already shunshined away, reappearing beside Kaito, who immediately hid behind him.

"N-Niichan, Help! You must protect me!"

Shinichi smiled and ruffled Kaito's hair.

"Asami, please. Can you not fool around so much when we are outside?"

"Heh~ Eisuke, weren't you also excited to meet Shin-chan and Kai-chan?" Asami teased.

"Ahem. Well…. That is that, and this is this. Please we are not alone here."

"Okay. Husband, if you say so."

"H-husband? We are outside… keep your manners..."

Eisuke stammered, his face flushed – a rare sight. The others chuckled. Over the past few years, Sosuke and Fukashi had made efforts to bring their families together more often. Bonds had deepened. Shinichi, once reserved, had come to accept the clan head's family into his heart. He found joy in their company.

"You're already married and have twin sons, and you're still blushing at being called husband?" Minami teased, pointing at Kagami. "Look at your brother Kagami-kun, so mature now that he's married. Eisuke, you've got a long way to go~"

Kagami coughed, flustered, but gave a wry smile toward his elder brother.

Eisuke's lips twitched.

"M-Minami-neesan… Kagami's been like that even before he married Komei…"

Aasmi linked arms with Minami, her voice playful.

"Huhuhu. Minami anesama what should I do with Eisuke?"

"Hohohoho. Don't worry. He'll mature and show some manliness soon enough. But I don't know why, Eisuke always turn soft towards you. Look at him, just one word from you, and he'll obey anything."

"Huhuhuhuhu."

"Ohohohohoho."

Two women covered their mouths, laughing as Eisuke tried to maintain his composure.

Meanwhile, Fukashi leaned toward Sosuke,

"So~, why did they marry so late? They have been engaged for quite a while, but they only tied the knot two years ago."

"Hmmm. I just felt that they should marry when Eisuke turned 22 and Asami turned 20. The number rounds up so nicely. 17, 18, 19? Too uneven. But 20 And 22, they are So even!"

"…. I don't know if that's a good reason or not…"

"Please, Fukashi," Aiko interjected while sighing. "Ignore my stubborn husband. At the time, the other party kept delaying the marriage. Minami's father did not want to marry her off."

"Oh! I see."

"OH! We should marry our grandchildren together Fukashi!" Sosuke exclaimed, noticing the obvious bulge on Minami's stomach. "Your child and our grandchildren."

"Oh! That sound not bad??"

"Hahaha. Think about it!"

Aiko facepalmed, shaking her head helplessly. Her expression said it all: 'we are going to have a serious talk when they get back home.'

The group continued toward the Senju compound, laughter trailing behind them. The festival lights grew brighter, the music louder, and scent of roasted chestnuts and sweet dumplings filled the air.

Tonight was a celebration of birth, one that Konoha never lacked and always welcomed.

And beneath the lantern-lit sky, the bonds between clans grew just a stronger and stronger, like a family, just as Hashirama envisioned.
