Chapter 12: The Architect and the Offer
The silence inside the Valkyrie's cockpit was absolute, a stark contrast to the violent chaos they had just left behind. The only sounds were the low, powerful hum of the engine and the ragged, hitched breathing of the two people standing frozen on the curb next to the passenger window.
Dr. Shen Hao clutched his wife's hand, his knuckles white, his body rigid with a terror that had not yet been processed. His glasses were slightly askew. His wife, Mei, trembled violently, her face pale and streaked with tears.
Li Wei looked at them through the open window, his face a mask of calm detachment. His gaze was not one of empathy, but of cold assessment. He saw a resource in shock, an asset that needed to be stabilized.
Kai stood a few feet away, a silent, menacing statue amidst the urban decay, ensuring no other threats emerged from the shadows.
"Are you injured?" Li Wei's voice was even, cutting through their panic. The question was practical, not empathetic.
Dr. Shen shook his head mutely, too terrified to form words. His wife just stared, wide-eyed at the man in the impossibly expensive car who had just unleashed a demon to save them.
"Good," Li Wei said. He gestured with his chin towards the thugs' dilapidated van. "Kai. Secure that vehicle. You will drive them. Follow me."
He didn't wait for a response or acknowledgment. The window slid up with a soft whisper, sealing him back into his silent, climate-controlled world. The command was given; it would be executed.
Kai moved without hesitation. He strode to the van, yanked the groaning driver (the one with the dislocated shoulder) from the cabin, and unceremoniously deposited him on the pavement with the others. He did a swift, professional check of the vehicle—keys were still in the ignition. He opened the rear doors and looked at the terrified couple. His flat, empty eyes were all the instruction they needed. Scrambling, they climbed into the bare, dusty cargo area of the van.
The two-vehicle convoy moved through the city: the low, gleaming silver Valkyrie, a spaceship from the future, followed by a battered, rumbling van that smelled of engine oil and fear. The contrast could not have been more stark.
The journey to Celestial Peak was a silent, surreal dream for the Shens. They huddled together in the back of the van, watching the city transform through the dirty windows as they ascended the mountain, from chaotic neon to serene, guarded opulence. The sheer improbability of their situation was a buffer against their panic.
The imposing gates of the villa complex, and then the specific gates of Villa Number One, retracted silently. The Valkyrie glided into the garage. Kai brought the van to a stop in the vast courtyard.
The main door of the villa slid open. Auntie Mei stood there, a figure of quiet authority. Her sharp eyes took in the scene instantly: the hypercar, the beaten-up van, the lethal-looking Kai, and the two pale, trembling people climbing out of it.
She did not gasp or ask questions. She simply waited for her principal's instruction, her hands clasped neatly in front of her.Li Wei's gaze moved from the terrified couple to Auntie Mei. His voice was calm, a clear command issued in the courtyard's silence.
"Auntie Mei. See to Mrs. Shen. Get her settled."
It was not a request. It was a directive, and Auntie Mei received it with a slight, respectful nod. "At once, Mr. Li."
She moved with purpose, going directly to the trembling woman. "Mrs. Shen, come with me, please," she said, her voice firm yet kind. "Let's get you somewhere comfortable." She gently guided the shell-shocked woman inside, expertly carrying out her principal's order.
Her action was now a direct execution of Li Wei's order, expertly isolating Dr. Shen for the conversation to come.
Li Wei stood waiting by the van. He gestured for Dr. Shen to follow him and led him not to a cozy living room, but to a sleek, modern home office with a floor-to-ceiling glass wall that presented the entirety of Shanghai as a sparkling trophy.
Li Wei went to a minimalist drinks cabinet and poured two glasses of a rich, amber whiskey. He handed one to Shen, who took it with a shaking hand, the crystal glass clinking softly against his wedding ring.
"Dr. Shen Hao," Li Wei began, his back to the view as he faced the smaller man. "Former Head of R&D at Ruixing Technologies. The architect of their 'Project Chimera' bio-interface. A project that was months from a market-ready prototype when your board, led by one Li Zhong, deliberately ran the company into the ground to sell its carcass and its patents to OmniStar's biotech division for a fraction of their value. You were the designated scapegoat for the 'failure'."
Shen's jaw dropped. The color drained from his face completely. The specific details, the name Li Zhong, the mention of OmniStar—it was all known only to a handful of people at the highest, most secretive levels. This stranger knew everything.
"Th-those men... they said it was a debt..." Shen stammered.
"Li Zhong is tying up loose ends," Li Wei stated, his voice cold and flat. "They weren't debt collectors. They were assassins. Your old life is over. It is a burned bridge."
He took a sip of his whiskey, letting the finality of that statement hang in the air. He then gestured with his glass to the view, to the room, to the villa around them.
"I am offering you a new one. I am giving you a company. Horizon Dynamics. Clean corporate structure, one hundred million RMB in seed capital. It is yours to run. Your research, your direction. I will provide the capital, the absolute protection you see standing outside," he said, referring to Kai, "and the leverage to reduce the men who tried to erase you to dust. Your wife will be safe here. No one will ever touch you again."
Dr. Shen was overwhelmed, swaying on his feet. He gulped the whiskey, the burn seeming to anchor him. "Why?" he whispered, his voice hoarse. "What do you want from me? Why would you do this?"
Li Wei's answer was the cold, hard truth.
"I want what you create. I own the company; you run it. Your success is my success. Your genius is the asset. What happened to you was inefficient. A waste of potential." He paused, and a flicker of something darker passed behind his eyes. "And I have a particular interest in seeing arrogant men who believe they are untouchable learn otherwise. Consider this a strategic investment."
Dr. Shen Hao looked from the impossible, god-like view of the city, to the impassive face of his mysterious savior, to the expensive whiskey in his hand—a symbol of a power and security he thought he'd lost forever. The choice was an illusion. There was no other path.
He hadn't said yes yet. But he would.
In Li Wei's vision, the mission status glowed, awaiting its update. [STATUS: IN PROGRESS - Asset Secured. Negotiation Pending.]
