Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 - Struggle For Hunger

The first day in the forest was a cruel joke. I told myself I was just "exploring," that my system had prepared me for this. I tried to apply the logic I'd learned from the game, looking for patterns in the trees, following the direction of the setting sun. But the forest wasn't an algorithm. It was a chaotic, organic mess with no clear exploits, and every winding trail looked like the one before.

The second day, the hunger began its slow, vicious dance. It wasn't a low rumble anymore; it was a hollow, scraping sensation in my gut, a parasite gnawing its way out. I tried to find berries, but the ones I recognized looked like withered husks, and the others looked like a bad roll of the dice. I stumbled on a small stream and drank until my stomach felt bloated, but the water just made the hunger more acute, like it was taunting me. I was a ghost in this new world, and my highly advanced A.I. training system had no protocol for finding food in the wild. I tried to use my phone to access the app, to beg it for a clue, but I had no signal. I was alone.

By the third day, the hunger was a roaring beast, and my body was a hollow cage of splintered bones. My hope was gone, replaced by a cold, sharp panic that made my teeth chatter. Every rustle of leaves was a monster, every snap of a twig a predator. I stumbled through the thorny undergrowth, my vision blurring at the edges, my mind replaying every cruel word I had ever heard. I was a failure in the academy, a failure with my friends, and now I was a failure in the wild. The logic of my system was nothing against the raw, animal terror that had taken over my mind.

My legs finally gave out, and I collapsed next to a mossy log. Tears I hadn't cried since the first day of Eden Academy streamed down my face, hot and salty.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, a pair of glowing eyes peered at me from the shadows. I froze, every nerve screaming. It was a large, dark-furred animal, its teeth bared in a snarl. It was a wolf. My mind screamed at me to run, to fight, to activate some forgotten combat protocol, but my body wouldn't obey. I was just a pile of bones, a feast waiting to happen. The wolf took a step forward, then another, its eyes fixed on me.

Suddenly, a rock flew past my head, striking the wolf with a sharp thwack. The animal yelped and darted back into the trees. I looked up, my blurry vision making sense of a figure standing in the clearing a few feet away. She was tall and slender, her features obscured by the fading light, with a cold, almost detached look in her eyes. I tried to speak, but the words wouldn't come. I wanted to thank her, to ask for help, but my body was spent. My head spun, and the world tilted. The last thing I saw was her face, a mix of curiosity and something I couldn't quite place. And then, everything went dark.
