Chapter 10 - The Queen’s Trial

The ceiling of Vampira's fortress split open with a metallic scream.

Heavy plates slid apart like the jaws of some ancient mechanical beast, revealing the night sky above Navitia. Rain began pouring through the opening, cascading into the chamber in shimmering streams.

And descending through that rain…

…were weapons.

Rows of hovering drones activated, their lenses glowing crimson. Turrets emerged from the walls, barrels rotating into position. Massive energy cannons unfolded from the ceiling rails.

Every single one of them aimed at the team.

Eddy slowly lifted his head from the cracked floor.

"…Okay," he groaned. "I officially withdraw my earlier statement about this being a fun adventure."

Kayden's visor flickered as his suit processed the threat.

"Defense grid active," he said grimly. "Forty-seven automated weapons… and counting."

Hailey's heart pounded as she stepped beside Joren.

"You weren't kidding about her controlling this place."

Joren wiped blood from his mouth, eyes locked on Vampira floating above them.

"She doesn't just rule Navitia," he muttered.

"She is Navitia."

Vampira hovered above the platform like a dark queen surveying her court.

"You came to challenge me," she said calmly.

"So prove you're worth the effort."

Her hand flicked downward.

And the drones fired.

ChaosThe chamber exploded into light.

Energy blasts rained down from every direction, turning the fortress into a battlefield of sparks and shockwaves.

"MOVE!" Kayden shouted.

Eddy vanished.

POP.

He reappeared behind two drones and kicked them out of the air.

POP.

He teleported again, grabbing Hailey by the arm just as a blast struck where she had been standing.

"Teleportation taxi service!" he yelled.

"You're welcome!"

Jackie launched upward, her spider limbs stabbing into the walls as she sprinted vertically across the chamber.

Her webs shot out in rapid bursts.

THWIP. THWIP. THWIP.

Three drones were yanked from the air and smashed into pillars.

"Ceiling's mine!" she called down.

Kayden planted his feet.

His mech suit expanded, armor plates locking into place as massive energy cannons formed along his arms.

"Luce!"

Luce ducked behind a console as blasts struck the floor around him.

"Yeah?!"

Kayden pointed toward the massive energy conduits lining the fortress walls.

"You see those systems?"

"Yeah!"

"Then use them!"

Luce shook his head frantically.

"I can't! My technopathy barely works!"

Kayden fired two blasts that vaporized incoming drones.

"Then learn now."

Another explosion rocked the chamber.

Kayden looked directly at him.

"You're not controlling machines."

"You're listening to them."

Luce frowned.

"What?"

Kayden pointed to the glowing cables running across the fortress.

"They're alive with energy. Systems talking to systems. Data flowing like blood."

Another drone descended toward Luce.

Kayden blasted it apart mid-air.

"You don't command technology."

"You connect with it."

Luce looked at his hands.

Sparks flickered across his fingertips.

"…connect?"

Hailey and JorenAcross the chamber, Hailey stood back-to-back with Joren as another wave of drones descended.

The rain pouring through the broken ceiling soaked them both.

Hailey glanced at him.

"You really came all this way… just to fight Vampira?"

Joren punched a drone with a density-enhanced strike.

The machine crumpled like paper.

"I came to become strong enough," he said.

Strong enough.

His voice softened slightly.

"…to find you."

Hailey blinked.

Another drone fired.

She raised her hands.

The air around her vibrated.

Then—

BOOOOOOM

A sonic blast shattered three drones instantly.

Joren stared at her.

"You got stronger."

She smirked.

"You disappeared."

Fair point.

Another turret activated above them.

Joren stepped forward.

"Duck."

Hailey crouched.

Joren's fist swung upward.

He increased the density of his strike.

The punch hit the turret like a meteor.

The entire weapon system collapsed inward.

Hailey grinned.

"Okay that's cool."

Joren allowed himself a faint smile.

Then the next wave of drones arrived.

They fought side by side.

Punches and sonic blasts echoing through the chamber.

For the first time in years…

They moved like they used to.

Like partners.

Eddy vs The SkyAbove them, Eddy blinked across the battlefield like lightning.

POP.

He appeared behind a drone.

Kick.

POP.

Another teleport.

Punch.

POP.

He grabbed a falling Jackie mid-air.

"Spider rescue!"

Jackie flipped off his shoulder, launching more webs.

"You're annoying."

"Yet useful!"

Another blast nearly hit them.

Eddy teleported again.

"Also incredibly handsome!"

Luce AwakensMeanwhile Luce stood frozen near the control console.

Kayden's words echoed in his mind.

Listen to the machines.

The fortress hummed around him.

Electricity.

Signals.

Circuits.

He closed his eyes.

And for the first time…

He didn't try to force the machines to obey.

He just listened.

Suddenly—

The noise became clear.

Data streams flowed through the walls like glowing rivers.

Energy pulses moved through cables like heartbeats.

The fortress wasn't a machine.

It was a network.

And Luce could feel it.

His eyes snapped open.

Electricity surged across his hands.

"I… I hear them."

Kayden smiled inside his helmet.

"Good."

Luce slammed his hands onto the console.

"Then let's talk."

The entire fortress flickered.

Half the drones suddenly turned.

And began firing at the other half.

Eddy stared in shock.

"…DUDE."

Jackie laughed.

"About time."

Kayden nodded proudly.

"Welcome to the fight, Luce."

The Queen DescendsThe team finally gained momentum.

Drones fell from the sky.

Turrets exploded.

The fortress trembled under their combined assault.

Then—

Everything stopped.

Every weapon froze mid-air.

Every drone shut down instantly.

The chamber went silent.

Vampira slowly descended to the ground.

Her crimson eyes glowed softly.

"You're stronger than I expected."

No one attacked.

They were too confused.

Joren stepped forward.

"You're done playing games?"

Vampira chuckled.

"You misunderstand."

She gestured around the ruined chamber.

"This was never a battle."

Eddy blinked.

"…What?"

Vampira looked at them one by one.

"You came to challenge the ruler of Navitia."

"You came to claim my throne."

She folded her arms.

"So I needed to see if you were worthy of even attempting it."

Hailey frowned.

"You were… testing us?"

Vampira nodded.

"And you passed."

Silence filled the room.

Jackie lowered her claws.

"You're not going to kill us?"

Vampira smiled.

"If I wanted you dead…"

She gestured to the massive fortress.

"You would already be."

Joren stepped forward.

"Then why warn us?"

Vampira's expression darkened.

"Because you children are chasing power…"

"…while the world is about to burn."

The room fell silent.

Kayden's helmet retracted slightly.

"What are you talking about?"

Vampira looked toward the opening in the ceiling.

Rain poured into the chamber.

Her voice became quieter.

"Navitia is not your real battlefield."

"There are forces moving across this world…"

"…forces that make me look small."

Luce felt a chill run down his spine.

"What forces?"

Vampira's eyes glowed brighter.

"The kind that hunt metahumans."

Her gaze shifted to Hailey.

Then Joren.

"They're coming."

She turned away.

"And when they arrive…"

"…you'll wish your greatest enemy was still me."

Lightning flashed across the sky above Navitia.

And for the first time since arriving in the city…

The team realized something terrifying.

This battle was only the beginning.

Rain continued to fall through the broken ceiling of Vampira's fortress.

Drops splashed against the cracked floor, hissing softly where stray arcs of electricity still flickered from destroyed drones.

No one moved.

The team stood frozen in the wreckage of the battlefield, staring at Vampira.

Her words still hung in the air.

You'll wish your greatest enemy was still me.

Silence stretched across the chamber like a tightening wire.

Hailey looked at Joren.

Joren looked at Kayden.

Luce stared at the ruined drones scattered across the floor.

Even Jackie, who usually had something sharp to say, stayed quiet.

Then—

Eddy cleared his throat loudly.

"Well," he said, rubbing the back of his neck.

"That was ominous."

Everyone turned to look at him.

He shrugged.

"I'm just saying. If you're going to drop mysterious world-ending warnings, at least follow it up with snacks or something."

Hailey elbowed him.

"Eddy."

"What? I'm coping."

Vampira chuckled softly.

The sound echoed through the chamber like velvet scraping against steel.

"You remind me why I never liked working with children."

Eddy placed a hand on his chest.

"Wow. That hurts."

Then Vampira's gaze shifted.

Not toward the kids.

Toward Kayden.

Her eyes softened slightly.

"Well," she said.

"Are you going to keep hiding behind that armor…"

"…or are you finally going to say hello, old friend?"

The room went still again.

Kayden didn't move.

His helmet remained closed for a moment longer.

Then with a soft mechanical hiss—

The visor slid open.

The kids all looked at him in surprise.

"Wait," Luce said slowly.

"You… know her?"

Kayden stepped forward quietly.

Rain dripped off the metal shoulders of his mech suit.

"…Hello, Vampira."

Her smile widened slightly.

"I was wondering how long it would take before you showed your face."

Eddy blinked.

"Hold up."

He pointed between them.

"You two know each other?"

Jackie's spider limbs twitched.

"Since when?"

Kayden looked at the kids.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he exhaled heavily.

"I suppose…"

"…I've kept this from you long enough."

He turned fully toward them.

"Before the war…"

"I wasn't a fighter."

"I wasn't a mentor."

"I wasn't hiding in cities like Navitia."

His voice carried a weight none of them had heard before.

"I was an engineer."

Luce tilted his head.

"An engineer?"

Kayden nodded.

"One of the best."

His gaze drifted across the shattered drones around them.

"And that was the problem."

The room grew quiet again.

"Years ago," Kayden continued, "before the war between humans and metahumans began… I worked for the Council of Nations."

Hailey frowned.

"The world government?"

Kayden nodded.

"They came to me with a proposal."

He clenched his fist slightly.

"They said the world was becoming dangerous. That conflicts between humans and metahumans were escalating. That cities needed protection."

His voice grew bitter.

"So they asked me to build something that could defend people."

Eddy crossed his arms.

"Let me guess."

"Bad idea."

Kayden looked directly at him.

"The Bayonets."

The name landed in the room like a dropped blade.

Even the rain seemed quieter.

Jackie spoke first.

"…The war machines?"

Kayden nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Luce felt a chill run down his spine.

"The robots that hunted metahumans…"

Kayden's voice was heavy.

"I built them."

The words echoed through the chamber.

Hailey's eyes widened.

"You… what?"

"I believed them," Kayden said quietly.

"I believed the Council when they said the Bayonets would protect the world."

He looked at his hands.

"They told me the machines would prevent war."

"But they lied."

Vampira folded her arms.

"They always do."

Kayden continued.

"When the conflict between humans and metahumans finally erupted… the Council activated the Bayonets."

His jaw tightened.

"And instead of protecting people…"

"…they hunted metahumans."

Silence swallowed the room.

"They turned my creations into weapons of extermination."

Luce looked down at the destroyed drones.

"You didn't know?"

Kayden shook his head slowly.

"By the time I realized the truth…"

"It was already too late."

Vampira's voice cut through the silence.

"You betrayed your own kind."

Her words were sharp.

Kayden didn't argue.

"…Yes."

The kids exchanged uneasy glances.

Then Vampira's gaze darkened.

"And now the Council continues its games."

She turned away slightly.

Hailey stepped forward.

"What do you mean?"

Vampira looked up toward the storm pouring through the ceiling.

"My daughter," she said quietly.

The word surprised everyone.

"…has been taken."

Joren frowned.

"Taken by who?"

Vampira's voice turned cold.

"The human officials."

The air in the room shifted.

Luce blinked.

"They kidnapped your daughter?"

"Yes."

Jackie stepped forward immediately.

"Then why aren't you destroying their entire government?"

The question hung in the air.

Vampira slowly looked back at them.

"You still think problems are that simple."

Her eyes moved across the group.

"You see strength and believe it solves everything."

She gestured around the fortress.

"Yes. I am powerful."

"Yes. I could destroy armies."

Her voice hardened.

"But if I attack the human government…"

"…it becomes war."

The word echoed heavily.

"A war between humans and metahumans."

Hailey's voice softened.

"But they took your daughter…"

Vampira's expression flickered with pain.

"For one child."

She looked at Kayden.

"You once helped ignite a war that killed thousands."

The jab landed like a blade.

"And I will not risk the fate of all metahumans for my own."

Kayden lowered his head slightly.

The kids finally understood.

Power wasn't the same as freedom.

Even someone like Vampira…

…was trapped by politics.

The world was bigger than fists and powers.

It was alliances.

Fear.

Governments.

Propaganda.

And decisions that could destroy millions.

Eddy broke the silence again.

"…Wow."

He rubbed his head.

"So the world is basically a giant mess."

Jackie snorted.

"That's one way to summarize it."

Luce looked at Vampira.

"So what happens now?"

Vampira's expression darkened slightly.

"That depends on how quickly the Council moves."

Kayden looked up sharply.

"You think they're planning something?"

Vampira nodded slowly.

"They always are."

Lightning flashed across the sky.

For a brief moment, the entire chamber was illuminated.

And in that moment—

Kayden's scanner beeped.

A new signal appeared.

A location.

Far away.

A city name.

Joltic City.

Kayden's eyes narrowed.

"…That's strange."

Hailey looked at him.

"What?"

Kayden hesitated.

Then spoke quietly.

"There are increased Council movements there."

Joren frowned.

"What kind of movements?"

Kayden's voice turned grim.

"The kind used to transport… prisoners."

Vampira's eyes flickered.

"Then it has begun."

Luce looked between them.

"What has?"

Vampira didn't answer.

Instead she turned toward the storm.

Her voice carried softly through the chamber.

"If you want to change this world…"

"…stop thinking like heroes."

"Start thinking like survivors."

The rain intensified.

Thunder rumbled across the city.

And far away—

In the shining towers of Joltic City—

Someone watched a screen displaying the battle in Navitia.

A tall figure stepped forward.

Their uniform bore the emblem of the Council Security Division.

Cold eyes studied the footage.

Especially the moment Luce controlled the machines.

"Interesting," the official murmured.

They turned to a group of soldiers.

"Prepare the cleansing facility."

The soldiers nodded.

"And what about the children?"

The official smiled thinly.

"We bring them to Joltic City."

The screen went dark.

"After all…"

"…the experiment is about to begin."
