3 Years Ago (21.5.2030 A.D.)
I was just a game developer in a company called Lead Development Corporation. That was before they came.
What happened that day was beyond anything anyone could imagine. Everyone was running as a massive, misty cloud rolled toward me.
A kid suddenly ran up to me.
"Uncle, have you seen my mommy?"
(I'm only 25, you blind brat…)
"No, I don't know," I said. He started crying, and just to comfort him, I picked him up. (Though he looked about ten years old… damn, he was heavy.)
"We'll find your mommy," I told him. "What's your name, kid?"
"Kevin," he sniffled.
But just as we started talking, we heard a boom. It sounded like a bomb, but it was actually a car exploding.
That was the first time I saw them—creatures beyond human comprehension.
They looked like a mixture of lizards and humans, with wings. About the size of a person, but with superhuman strength. The car explosion we'd heard earlier was from one of them leaping onto it.
I was so terrified I could almost feel my soul leaving my body. (Just kidding… but seriously, I was terrified.)
There were thousands of them.
In spite of everything, I ran as fast as I could. I didn't look back. Kevin screamed. I screamed too. We were almost at the end of our lives.
We ducked into an alleyway. Kevin was trembling, so I tried to calm him until he stopped crying. I kept my eyes on both ends of the alley—because if I wasn't alert, we were going to die.
Then I saw it.
A spaceship-looking thing in the sky. Bigger than a stadium. The lizards were pouring out of it like ants.
But then I noticed something. Most of the lizards were attacking everything in sight, but one of them was just standing there in front of the ship, almost like a commander.
(Why does everything bad have to happen today? First I lose my job, now this…)
"Uncle, what should we do?" Kevin asked.
(Stop calling me uncle…)
"We should hide for now. We'll figure something out later."
After about an hour, the creatures finally left.
Then Kevin's stomach growled.
"Why didn't you tell me you were hungry?" I asked.
"I didn't want to ask a stranger for food," he muttered.
"I'm not a stranger, okay? From now on, I'm your big brother."
"Okay, uncle," he replied.
(Is this kid trying to rage-bait me?)
I gave him some food I'd grabbed from a restaurant earlier. (Since I hadn't eaten breakfast—my boss fired me first thing that morning. If I ever see him again, I'll kill him…)
Kevin nervously started eating, and I took a bite too. After we finished, we went exploring the city.
And what we saw… was beyond anything I expected.
The streets were littered with hundreds of corpses.
I quickly covered Kevin's eyes. Some of the bodies didn't have heads, legs, or hands. It was so disgusting I vomited on the spot. I blindfolded Kevin (I carry one around because I sleep during the day a lot). But even blindfolded, he knew what was on the ground.
I spotted a nearby store, picked Kevin up, and ran inside. I locked the door and removed his blindfold. His eyes lit up when he saw all the food inside, but I knew if we stayed, other survivors would eventually find the store. Then we'd have to fight for food.
So I told him, "Eat as much as you want, but make sure we save some stock for later."
I grabbed sealed food packets since they'd last longer. We stayed there for the night. (Who wants to get killed by lizards outside?)
But before we slept, Kevin asked me a question that sent chills down my spine.
"Do you think my mommy's already been killed by them?"
I couldn't answer. I just said, "No. She's okay. Just like us."
But deep down, I wasn't so sure.
22.5.2030 A.D.
At the crack of dawn, I got ready to venture out into the city. I tried waking Kevin, but he was half-asleep, so I went to wash up in the store's restroom first.
I grabbed some clothes from the shelves, picked up a wrench and a hammer, and just like that—I was ready.
Kevin also got ready. (Well, I helped him, but still.)
Strangely, I felt a thrill at what we might encounter today. Kevin was happy to have company, but he still wasn't the same after last night's talk.
To cheer him up, I told him, "If we explore, maybe we'll find your mommy."
That made him smile a little.
We headed in the opposite direction of yesterday's massacre. (I wasn't about to see that again.)
As we explored, I saw bloodstains on the top of a fifty-story building. Those ruthless creatures must've used their wings to get up there.
Everything was in ruins. Roads destroyed. Houses broken.
Then, suddenly, a shadowy figure appeared at the corner of a building.
We quickly hid. But the figure started walking toward us.
I thought… this was the end.
