Chapter 96 - Chapter 94: Alliance With The Shadow – Part 4

A girl stood in front of Kuro's house, holding her belongings over one shoulder. Her spear rested casually in her grip, but her posture carried the confidence of someone who knew exactly how strong she was.

She clicked her tongue softly.

"Hmph… I've come back to this place again."

Her eyes scanned the house with mild annoyance, but beneath that irritation was familiarity. This wasn't her first visit—and clearly, it wouldn't be her last.

Meanwhile…

Inside the house, the atmosphere was serious.

Theron stood upright, his expression calm yet firm as he addressed the room.

"Mr. Ninth King… we must extract the power of the Third General. However—"

Before he could finish—

The door suddenly opened.

"You called me, Uncle?"

Every head in the room turned instantly.

She walked in without hesitation, her spear lightly tapping against the ground with each step. Confidence radiated from her presence.

Kuro glanced toward her and nodded.

"So, Sophia… you've come."

She stopped a few steps away, crossing her arms.

"Yeah. And you better have a good reason," she replied casually. "Calling me again right after I just left? You don't waste time, do you?"

Kuro exhaled.

"Sorry about that."

"It's fine," she shrugged. "Though it would've been nice to get a warning."

Her eyes shifted—and then softened slightly.

"Hey, Yume. How have you been?"

Yume smiled gently.

"I'm fine. What about you?"

Sophia let out a long sigh, pulling out her phone and waving it lazily.

"I barely reached home when that old geezer called me again without any warning."

Yume scratched her cheek awkwardly.

"Yeah… about that."

Sophia raised a brow.

After a while…

"What?"

Yume explained everything.

The power. The Third General. The responsibility.

And Ren.

Silence filled the room.

Then—

"WHAT?!"

Sophia's voice echoed through the entire house.

She stared at Yume in disbelief.

"Let me get this straight…" she pointed at her. "You're saying you've unlocked some insane power… and now I've been dragged all the way back here to take responsibility for it—and inherit the Third General's power too?"

She paused.

Then turned around dramatically.

"Nah. I'm out. This is a pain. I'm not doing it."

Yume immediately stepped forward.

"Oh, come on, Sophia! Please—"

"You're the strongest in our clan right now," Yume added quickly.

Theron also stepped in politely.

"Miss Sophia, your strength makes you the most suitable candidate."

Sophia clicked her tongue again, clearly irritated.

With an arrogant expression, she turned her head—and her gaze landed on Ren, who was standing quietly behind everyone.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"The Ninth King, huh…"

She stepped closer, analyzing him.

"So, you're involved too?"

Ren didn't react much.

"I told my master to call someone capable," he said calmly. "He called you."

Sophia blinked.

"…Oh. So it was Uncle's decision."

Suddenly—

"HEY, UNCLE!"

She shouted across the room, pointing directly at Kuro.

"Why did you call me?!"

The tension in her voice was clear.

Kuro sighed, rubbing his temple.

"First, calm down."

But then—

His tone changed completely.

His expression turned serious.

"Sophia… listen carefully."

The room fell silent again.

"There are others who are strong. Some may even surpass you in certain areas," he said. "But that's not what we need."

Sophia folded her arms again.

"Then what do you need?"

Kuro's eyes sharpened.

"We need the strongest."

A brief pause.

"And right now—even without the Third General's power…"

He pointed directly at her.

"You are the strongest."

The words landed heavily.

Sophia didn't respond immediately.

For once, she didn't have a comeback.

"…Tch."

She looked away, slightly annoyed—but not rejecting it.

"Fine," she muttered.

Everyone looked at her.

"I'll take the role."

Yume's face brightened instantly.

"Really?!"

Sophia sighed.

"Don't make me repeat myself."

Then she looked back at Kuro.

"So, Uncle… what do I have to do?"

2.5 Months Later…

Time passed.

And the world began to heal.

It had been two and a half months since the battle.

The village, once shattered and silent, was now alive again. Lights filled the streets. Voices echoed through the air. People returned to their normal lives—as if trying to forget the chaos that once consumed everything.

And so did Ren and his team.

But they didn't return to peace.

They returned to preparation.

Sophia trained relentlessly.

The power of the Third General was no simple force—it was overwhelming, volatile, and dangerous.

But she controlled it.

Slowly.

Efficiently.

Power bent to her will.

Arden trained under Haru.

And not just Haru.

The First General within Haru pushed Arden to his absolute limits. Every day was a battle. Every session felt like survival.

But Arden didn't break.

He sharpened.

Daiki advanced as well.

The power of the Second General within him grew stronger, more refined. What was once unstable was now controlled destruction.

And then—

Ren.

At first, he relied on raw strength.

Overwhelming force.

Unstoppable presence.

But now—

He had changed.

His power was no longer wild.

It was refined.

Controlled.

Sharper.

Deadlier.

The shadows no longer raged—they obeyed.

And Yume…

She evolved the most.

Her wings, once unstable and uncontrollable, now moved with grace. They responded instantly to her will.

Her power no longer overwhelmed her.

It flowed through her.

Like it had always belonged there.

"It's been two months…" Daiki muttered, stretching slightly. "Feels unreal."

"Yeah," Ren added calmly. "It does."

The group stood together for a brief moment, watching the open gates of the village.

Gates that had once been sealed.

Now open again.

"It means one thing," Daiki continued. "We still have time before the real battle begins."

Ren nodded.

"Yeah… but not much."

"Alright! Enough chatting!"

Kuro's voice cut through the moment like a blade.

Everyone flinched slightly.

"Don't slack off!" he continued. "Get back to training!"

Arden groaned.

"We've already been through hell—"

"Excuses," Zenkai interrupted sharply, stepping forward. "All of you. Move."

"Come on…" Arden muttered.

"Get your butt up and continue," Zenkai added coldly.

"Alright, alright!" Arden raised his hands.

Then—

"Ren."

Zenkai's gaze shifted.

"Don't think being the Ninth King changes anything."

Ren sighed.

"…Yes, father."

Sophia smirked from the side.

"Even the Ninth King can't talk back to his father."

"Shh," Yume nudged her lightly.

But she couldn't hide her smile.

And just like that—

Everyone returned to their training.

Evening…

The sun began to fall.

Ren walked alone toward the mountains near the village.

The wind grew quieter the higher he climbed.

Eventually—

He reached the edge.

A cliff overlooking the endless forest below.

Ren sat down quietly.

No noise.

No voices.

Just the sound of wind brushing through the trees.

For once—

He allowed himself to stop.

"No wonder you came here."

Ren turned slightly.

Yume stood behind him.

"…What are you doing here?" he asked.

"I was looking for you," she replied. "Then I saw you heading this way… so I followed."

Ren looked back at the horizon.

"…Why?"

Yume hesitated for a second.

Then—

"I just wanted some time alone."

A pause.

"With you."

Ren glanced at her again.

Then silently shifted a little—making space beside him.

Yume walked forward.

And sat down.

The sunset painted the sky in gold and crimson.

The forest below stretched endlessly, glowing under the fading light.

For a while—

Neither of them spoke.

And somehow…

That silence felt right.

The wind brushed gently across the cliff, carrying with it the quiet whispers of the forest below.

For a while, neither Ren nor Yume spoke.

And yet… it didn't feel empty.

It felt complete.

"Strange…" Yume murmured softly.

Ren didn't look at her.

"What is?"

"That we finally have a moment like this," she said, her voice calm. "No battles. No pressure. No one shouting at us to train harder…"

She paused, letting the breeze pass through her hair.

"Just… this."

Ren let out a quiet breath—almost a laugh.

"…Yeah. It does feel unreal."

Silence returned again.

But this time, it was warmer.

Deeper.

The kind of silence that didn't need to be filled.

After a few moments, Yume leaned back slightly, supporting herself with her hands.

"You've changed," she said.

Ren raised a brow.

"For better… or worse?"

"For better," she replied instantly.

That answer came too quickly to be anything but honest.

"Before, you relied on raw power. You'd charge in without thinking… like you were trying to crush everything in your path."

Ren looked down at his hands.

For a brief second—

Dark shadows flickered faintly around his fingertips.

Then vanished.

"And now?" he asked quietly.

"Now…" Yume looked at him.

"You're calm."

"Controlled."

"Stronger… but not reckless."

Ren didn't respond immediately.

"I had to change," he finally said. "I can't afford to lose. Not anymore."

His voice was low.

Heavy.

"If I lose… everyone pays the price."

Yume's expression softened.

"You don't always have to carry everything alone."

Ren let out a small breath.

"…I know."

A short pause.

"That's why I rely on you."

Yume blinked.

But before she could react—

Ren added casually, almost as if trying to hide the sincerity behind it:

"…But I'm still the Ninth King."

Yume frowned slightly.

"And I'm not just 'everyone,'" she replied, her voice firm—but gentle.

That made him stop.

Really stop.

For a moment, the weight of her words settled in.

The wind grew stronger.

Yume's wings shimmered faintly behind her—no longer unstable, no longer wild.

They moved naturally now.

As if they had always been a part of her.

Ren's gaze lingered on them.

Yume noticed.

A small smirk appeared on her lips.

"What? Impressed?"

Ren looked away toward the horizon.

"…Maybe."

"Oh? Just maybe?" she teased.

"You've gotten stronger," Ren said calmly. "Way stronger."

Yume blinked again.

He rarely said things like that.

"And?" she pressed.

Ren hesitated for a fraction of a second.

"…And I'm glad."

"For what?"

Ren turned slightly toward her.

"That you're here."

A pause.

"By my side."

The words were simple.

But they carried weight far beyond their simplicity.

Yume's confident expression faltered—just for a moment.

Her eyes shifted away.

The sunset reflected in them like burning gold.

"You know…" she said softly, her voice quieter now, "when you were fighting that day…"

Ren stiffened slightly.

"I was scared."

He looked at her.

"Scared?"

Yume nodded slowly.

"I know how strong you are. I know what you've become…"

Her fingers tightened slightly against the ground.

"But that doesn't make you invincible."

Ren stayed silent.

"I don't want to watch you disappear," she added quietly.

Her voice dropped almost to a whisper.

"…Not in front of me."

That sentence lingered in the air.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Ren turned toward her fully this time.

For once, there was no teasing in his eyes.

No arrogance.

No mask.

"I'm not planning to disappear," he said, a faint smile forming.

"…Not that easily."

"That's not funny."

"I'm not joking."

Their eyes met.

And this time—

Neither of them looked away immediately.

The world around them faded.

No war.

No shadows.

No titles.

Just two people.

Yume was the first to break eye contact.

Her cheeks were slightly flushed—though whether it was from the wind or something else… even she wasn't sure.

"You've gotten smoother with your words," she muttered.

"Have I?"

"Yes," she said. "It's annoying."

Ren chuckled softly.

A quiet, genuine sound.

Even he wasn't used to hearing it from himself.

Yume shifted slightly closer.

Then—

She leaned her shoulder gently against his.

It wasn't accidental.

It wasn't hesitant.

It was deliberate.

Ren felt it.

But he didn't move away.

Instead, his hand rested beside hers.

Close.

Close enough that their fingers almost touched.

But not quite.

"You know…" Yume said, her voice lighter again, trying to ease the atmosphere, "when this war is over…"

Ren looked at her.

"What?"

She hesitated.

Just for a second.

A rare moment for someone like her.

"…When this is all over…"

Her gaze softened.

"Let's come back here."

Ren blinked.

"That's it?"

Yume narrowed her eyes.

"What were you expecting?"

"I don't know," he said. "Something more dramatic."

"Hmph. Idiot."

But she smiled.

A real smile.

Not confident.

Not teasing.

Just… genuine.

Ren watched her.

A second longer than necessary.

The golden light of the setting sun reflected in her eyes.

For a brief moment—

Everything else faded.

"…Alright," he said finally.

"When this is over… we'll come back here."

Yume turned to him.

"Promise?"

Ren raised his hand slightly.

His pinky extended—playful.

Yume blinked.

Then immediately frowned.

"…You're acting like a child."

"Is that a no?"

She sighed dramatically.

But there was no real resistance in it.

After a second—

She hooked her pinky with his.

"…Fine. Promise."

Their fingers locked gently.

A small gesture.

Almost meaningless to anyone else.

But to them—

It meant everything.

The wind softened.

The sun dipped lower.

And for the first time in what felt like forever—

There were no voices in Ren's mind.

No shadows whispering.

No pressure crushing his shoulders.

Just… peace.

As the sky darkened—

Yume slowly leaned her head against his shoulder.

Ren froze.

Just for a second.

His body tensed instinctively.

But then—

He relaxed.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As if afraid the moment would break if he moved too much.

Neither of them spoke again.

They didn't need to.

The silence said everything.

The last light of the sun disappeared beyond the horizon.

Darkness spread across the sky.

But this time—

It didn't feel heavy.

It didn't feel cold.

It felt calm.

And for now…

That was enough.
