Chapter 9 - CHAPTER NINE: THE WARNING

Layla's thumbs hovered above the keyboard for almost five minutes before she finally pressed send. The words looked harsher than she felt, but she couldn't take them back now.

Layla [8:12 AM]:

Liam, I need to say this. Please stop talking about love with me. Ever since you brought it up, I haven't been able to concentrate. It's distracting. It's… too much.

She locked the phone, pressed it against her chest, and exhaled shakily. The truth was, it wasn't distraction—it was fear. Fear that she already felt something too close to what he confessed. Fear that she couldn't keep pretending her heart was steady when it wasn't.

Minutes later, the phone buzzed.

Liam [8:17 AM]:

I see. I didn't mean to upset you, Layla. I only spoke what I felt. But if it's too heavy for you, I'll carry it alone for now.

Her breath caught. She hadn't expected him to take it so calmly, so gently. No anger. No guilt. Just… understanding.

Layla [8:20 AM]:

Why do you always handle things like this? You don't fight back, you don't argue…

Liam [8:21 AM]:

Because I'm not here to fight you. I'm here to know you. If silence makes you comfortable, I'll take silence. If patience is what you need, I'll give it. But don't ask me to stop feeling what I feel. That part isn't negotiable.

Layla's chest tightened. His words were careful, yet unyielding. He wasn't backing down—but he also wasn't forcing her.

She buried her face in her pillow, wishing her heart would stop racing.

For the first time, she realized it wasn't Liam who was distracting her.

It was her own feelings, clawing their way out no matter how much she tried to bury them.

Layla expected silence after her warning. She thought Liam would back off completely, maybe even disappear like others had when she pulled away.

But Liam wasn't like others.

That day, he didn't flood her phone with questions or declarations. Instead, his messages were simple, almost ordinary—like pebbles skipping lightly across still water.

Liam [11:05 AM]:

Don't forget to drink water.

Liam [1:13 PM]:

How's work? Heavy as usual?

Liam [3:27 PM]:

Don't skip lunch. Even if it's something small.

None of them pressed for answers. None demanded attention. Yet, each one reached her, threading warmth through her busy day.

By evening, she couldn't help but reply.

Layla [6:40 PM]:

You're really not giving up, are you?

Liam [6:42 PM]:

On reminding you to take care of yourself? Never.

Her heart thumped harder than she wanted to admit. He wasn't pushing her with "love talk" anymore—he was simply showing up in the quietest, steadiest ways.

Liam had respected Layla's request—he didn't press her, didn't drown her in endless texts, but he was still there. A good morning here, a gentle check-in there, always enough to remind her that he cared, without crossing the line she'd drawn.

And then, one evening, his message came through:

> "How about we unwind the tension? Just you and me tonight. No heavy talk—just good company."

Layla hesitated, fingers hovering over her screen. Her heart argued with her mind, but curiosity and longing won.

When she finally stepped out of the cab that night, her chest tightened at the sight of him leaning against his car, arms folded, waiting with that calm smile she was beginning to recognize as dangerous.

"You came," he said softly.

"You asked nicely," she teased, though her voice betrayed her nerves.

He held the door open for her, and their evening began.

Instead of somewhere loud or flashy, Liam drove her to a quiet restaurant tucked away from the chaos of the city. Warm lights and soft music wrapped the place in intimacy, and Layla realized—he always knew how to choose spaces where the world seemed to shrink into just the two of them.

Dinner was lighthearted—Liam's wit, his unguarded laughter, the way he asked about her day as though nothing else mattered. Layla found herself telling him stories she hadn't planned to share, laughing louder than she had in months.

But just when she thought the night was winding down, Liam leaned forward, eyes gleaming with mischief.

"Up for a little detour?"

"At this hour?," Layla asked.

"Exactly. Midnight's when the city belongs to us." Liam responded in a very seductive tone.

Before she could argue, he drove them to a quiet open-air park. To her surprise, he popped the trunk and pulled out a small bag. Inside—two mugs and a thermos.

"You didn't," she said, wide-eyed.

"I did," Liam grinned, pouring her a cup of hot chocolate. "Unpredictability keeps life interesting."

Layla shook her head, laughing as she accepted the warm cup. "You're impossible."

"Or maybe," he countered, eyes lingering on her, "I'm just exactly what you didn't expect."

They walked slowly, sipping, talking, sometimes slipping into silences that carried more weight than words. The lamps painted soft golden trails along the path, and though time passed—midnight into one, one into two—they barely noticed.

By the time he pulled up in front of her house, the city was sleeping. Liam turned to her, his voice low, almost careful.

"Thank you, Layla. For trusting me with your time tonight."

Her chest tightened, and though she wanted to say more, her lips only allowed, "Goodnight, Liam."

He waited until she disappeared inside before driving away, leaving Layla against the door, pulse racing, knowing she was in far deeper than she had planned.

Layla leaned against her door, her chest rising and falling in uneven breaths. She wasn't sure how long she stood there before she finally slipped out of her heels and crawled into bed, replaying every little detail of the evening.

Her phone buzzed.

It was him.

> Liam: Home safe. I know it's late, but I couldn't let the night end without saying thank you again.

She smiled despite herself, typing back quickly.

> Layla: You already said that in the car.

The reply came almost instantly.

> Liam: I know. But it didn't feel like enough.

She bit her lip, her heart tugging between laughter and something deeper.

> Layla: You're unbelievable.

> Liam: And yet… you're still awake, texting me.

Layla stared at the screen, her cheeks warming. He was right. She should have ended it, gone to sleep, but she didn't want the night to end either.

> Layla: Because you're impossible to ignore.

There was a pause this time—long enough that she thought he'd fallen asleep. Then:

> Liam: That might be the most dangerous compliment I've ever received.

Her chest tightened. Dangerous. That was exactly what he felt like—danger wrapped in comfort, in laughter, in hot chocolate under the stars.

She set the phone on her chest, closed her eyes, but the smile wouldn't leave her lips.

Somewhere deep down, Layla knew this wasn't just another late-night chat. This was the beginning of something she had no control over.

And it terrified her.

And thrilled her.

Layla thought she could finally fall asleep when her phone lit up again—this time, not Liam. Zara's name blinked across the screen.

> Zara: Madam, gist me. How did it go with Loverboy tonight? I viewed your status posting drinks and steak meats. Which I know obviously you can't take yourself out at that hour of the night.

Layla groaned softly, burying her face into her pillow before replying.

> Layla: Why are you awake at this hour?

> Zara: Excuse me? You're awake too ?. Stop stalling. I want DETAILS.

Layla hesitated, then typed:

> Layla: It was… nice. Too nice, honestly.

> Zara: "Too nice"? Please don't bore me with understatement. Start talking.

Layla couldn't help it; her lips curled into a grin as she remembered the dinner, the hot chocolate, the way Liam looked at her like she was the only person alive.

> Layla: He didn't rush anything. He made me laugh. He even had hot chocolate in his car, Zara. Who does that?

> Zara: Wait. Wait. So he's romantic and unpredictable? I'm officially jealous.

> Layla: Don't start. You know how I feel about getting carried away.

> Zara: Please. You're already carried. You're in the air somewhere above the clouds.

Layla rolled her eyes, even though her friend couldn't see her.

> Layla: It's scary. I don't want to lose myself. But tonight… I felt safe. Like time just disappeared.

There was a pause before Zara replied.

> Zara: Babe, that's exactly what love is supposed to feel like.

Layla stared at the words, her pulse quickening. She quickly locked her phone and dropped it on the bedside table. But no matter how hard she tried, Zara's words lingered—soft, insistent, impossible to ignore.
